Great instructional video. It wasn't my door lock, but the exterior handle that was sticking on the passenger side (probably from lack of use). I took everything apart and lubricated the pulley's with white grease and the cable and spring area with WD-40. As soon as I tested it I could feel it moving more freely. Thank you for posting this. 1985 Alfa Graduate owner.
I'm the new owner of a beautiful 86 Spider with a door lock which turns freely without locking anything. That will probably be my first fix and your video is incredibly reassuring. Even a guy like me can do it apparently. many thanks!

Hi Ryan - very helpful video, thank you. I have a 87 spider graduate, same problem. I will now "attempt" to remove the panel and to clean the spring inside the door, thanks to your informational video. Please post more videos in case you do more repairs.
Hi there. I have an '87 Spider Graduate and appreciate this video. I am also having an issue with my driver side door. Will not open from the outside. Was sticking for awhile, and now just won't flat out open. This gives me more confidence in opening up to the panel to see what is going on. If you have a video to fix outside door mechanism, would appreciate.
I’m glad this video helped you! This is the only video I have for the door panel but if you keep searching UA-cam I’m sure there is one that will help you.
Thanks for sharing. For older Spiders (with the smaller chrome interior door release lever and window crank), there's a clip to remove the parts (no screw like the later Spiders). Don't forget to put the plastic back on right or your door card will get wet when it rains.
Use Grease Lightning or Mean Green to remove all the grime build up on spring coil. Once it’s removed you shouldn’t need any lubricant. Some lubricants actually cause dust and grime build up.
I opened up the driver's side door panel to look into why my window crank was "crunchy". Found frayed cable on the bottom of the regulator, and the slack was literally crunching inside the regulator gears. I tried to cut out 3" of cable and reattach a solder ball to hold it into the regulator. So far unsuccessful and frustrated. 87 Spider Graduate.
I have not had to replace one of the cables but I highly recommend joining the Alfa Romeo Spiders Facebook page. Someone can give you quick answers to any Spider question. The group is amazing!
I spent about 12 hours trial and error replacing the cable. At 119", it was too slack. After cutting 1.5" off (117.5") the cable was too tight. The next day, another trip to the hardware store for more cable and end stops, around 118" seems to work. I probably uninstalled and reinstalled the crank and cable 5 times, also adjustments. (Note; 3 to 3.5 windings on the crank, depending on the position of the window.) Next, both door handles needed rehabilitation and deep cleaning, linkage problems, and a broken spring. After finding a replacement spring for the handle, fixing the linkage, uninstalled and reinstalled both door handles 3-4 times... everything is working perfectly now! All the locks, keys, and window cranks are working as designed. Altogether, around 24 hours of tinkering around. Today, I found a 1982 Fiat 2000 in the junkyard, so I spent several more hours salvaging spare parts from it. The door handles are identical. Also got several spare plastic wheels for the cables, and door stops (the plastic bumpers) for both of the doors.
Very useful. Thanks. Proud owner of a 1987 Alfa Romeo Spider Graduate for 28 years.
