Fans of the original Land Rover Defender were split when it went off sale in the mid-2010s - many lamented the loss of an off-roading legend, and others embraced the more modern, hi-tech reincarnation that followed in 2020. The Ineos Grenadier caters to the former group of purists with its traditional, rugged, no-nonsense approach, sticking very close to the recipe that made the classic Defender such a dependable workhorse. Despite its 4x4 underpinnings, the Grenadier does still offer a few modern touches, such as an infotainment system, parking sensors and cameras, but has Ineos struck the right balance in a market full of off-roading rivals that can do it all, including the latest Defender itself? Rich finds out.

I’ve replaced my G wagon (2018) for one .
After 6 months ownership I can honestly say I love it.
It beats the G wagon on :
Steering
Suspension
Fuel economy
Build quality
Warranty
Oh and it’s a true solid axle 4 x 4 not a SUV.
And after owning over a dozen land rovers trust me I won’t be owning anymore.
The Ineos is built to last , I think in 5 years time they’ll be a short wheel base along with a hydrogen powered unit .A two door cab with an open chassis would do well, that’ll give flexibility to create anything on the back end , campers , recovery , fire , extendable lifts, anything within reason .
Sir Jim should talk with Sir Bamford as he’s already built and running hydrogen I.C.E powered UK designed engines from his Rocester factory .
Regarding the price, the early adopters got them at a lower price than now, but I see to help buyers they are offering 0% if you put down a large deposit , that almost wipes out the increase .
Finally , go test drive one for a day not a hour, I reckon you’ll love it, assuming you’re actually into true 4x4s not SUVs.
Fkin traitors
Great insight, thanks!
Is there any infrastructure for hydrogen powered cars yet? Lots of alternative fuels are the last curse I would want in a remote off-road adventure.
Hydrogen powered buses are now being trialled in the UK but it seems that car manufacturers are not particularly interested - I would mean, of course, yet another set-up for re-charging somewhere along the way !!@@scottleggejr
@@brianbrotherston5940 put those where the EV stations are. America is done with EVs. The nation is too big and mountainous to deal with batteries recharging. I couldn't imagine having to wait 30-45 minutes on a 4+ hour road trip with kids to get to Disneyland.
It’s not made in the same place as the G Wagon. Magna Steyr done a lot of the engineering work on it but It’s built in Hambach, France.
Sorry, you are absolutely right!
I am sorry but I’m working on this car in the Netherlands, not France, we produce most of the body panels (hoods, doors, bumpers, and many other in Voestalpine Autmotive Company Bunschoten) I can give you video and pictures from production and welding
The factory in hambach was the factory that made the g wagon. He just bought it to make the car
@@salihgonlutok5959 The G Wagon is made by Magna Steyr in Austria who engineered the Grenadier. It is built in the French Mercedes factory that made the Smart cars before they were moved to China.
Pity it wasn't built in UK. Surely Sir Ratcliffe was a huge Brexit supporter.
They’re on the right track. I think the new defenders lost a huge market opportunity. They should have made the new ones are charge the prices they want. But continued the older model and made it a super basic base defender, so it’s affordable to the lower market, then owners can upgrade it to how they want
Thumbs down on quality? Are you completely daft? The fit and finish of mine is superb. Ok sorry no mahogany dashboard inlay and pearl buttons.
A great off roader and a capable on roader that seems to match it's.... inspirational models. The interesting point is how insurable and will it be reliable, something that is arguably questionable in the past from it's primary competition. Many thanks for sharing.
Good solid powerful work drive. It has grown on me over the last few months.
What materials don’t feel up to snuff?! You should be specific.
Is it going to be an on going trend, having the speedo on the side/infotainment screen? I'm personally uncomfortable with it. Otherwise, the overall throwback design is appealing.
You get used to it after the first 500 kms. Not even a slight problem.
I'm in america and have had my eye on these for a while now. I would get this or the jeep gladiator without hesitation for looks alone. I bet either one is a nightmare of bugs, recalls, quirky repairs, etc. British cars have an awful reputation in the us.
This isn’t British. Far from it. It is French built with Italian tractor axles driven by a combination of German BMW engines and ZF transmissions apart from I believe a US sourced transfer box.
@@hedydd2 okay so Renault and Peugeot don't make anything better from a reliability perspectivethan the Brits. Germans make quality but it's expensive here.
I love it
The ‘certified commercial’ vehicles, including the Quartermaster pickup, do not meet the tax requirements for VAT and income tax/corporation tax relief. That kills them stone dead, especially the pickup, as commercial work vehicles for businesses. It makes the Quartermaster, for instance, twice the price of the equivalent Ford Ranger Wildtrak or VW PanAmericana after VAT is recovered [as soon as the first month of ownership] and then there is the unavailable tax relief of up to 130% it loses out on as well and, if given to an employee to take home, a massive benefit in kind tax penalty on top to be deducted from PAYE.
It’s a beautiful car!
How much price
Mentioned in the review!
it actually looks more like a mid 2000s G wagen
Recirculating ball steering prevents the real pain of the steering wheel being torn out of your hand on a rogue bolder on a rough track. This is purpose build 4x4 and not a sporty SUV for impressing the other soccer moms at the mall. This guy is complaining about the height getting in? Wait till it gets a 4" lift kit and 35 inch mud dogs.
Having had many recirculating ball steering boxes, starting with Massey Ferguson and Ford tractors, through Land Rovers and classic Range Rovers, to Mitsubishi Pajero, Nissan European Terrano, Isuzu Bighorn/Troopers and many others, plus plenty of rack and pinion off roaders used off road, like the 100 series Land Cruiser, Ford Ranger T6 [rest of the world] Ranger T7 [current world version], Later Range Rovers as well, give me a rack and pinion steering any day. Especially the latest electric power steering systems. While the early Land Cruiser 100 series does have rather too much feedback on washboard roads, current models such as the hydraulic early T6 Ranger r&p system or later electric, have great feedback, just right, with far greater precision and finesse than any recirculating ball box. The ONLY reason that Grenadier has such a box is because it has a live beam axle up front. This is just not compatible with rack and pinion or most of the safety systems one would normally expect and get these days. Basically the Grenadier steering system does not impress and is over complicated, over expensive, prone to shimmy [hence the low slung damper on the drag link] prone to wear and slop and gives virtually no self centring or feedback.
The Ineos Grenadier Base on Land Rover Defender
Why not show the engine
Nothing to see but a big plastic cover, as is usual these days. Take that off and it’s inevitably a frighteningly ugly and complex looking beast.
Who would want Electric vehicle like this? For crawling around the mall parking lot?
Yep totally useless. I have a pile of rotopax to extend 400 highway mile range... Off highway and trail driving is very low mpg.
It’s the vehicle from warzone
#bringbackmat
Fighter jet? 1960’s fighter jet maybe.
Once a contender channel to carwow so far left behind. What a shame. I remember the day matt Watson announced that he was joining another channel called carwow. Seems like many moons ago.
The prices on these things are obscene
So pretty much:
Design: Ineos
Engine & other mechanical parts: BMW
But it looks pretty good!
"poking blindly at a touchscreen" >? a bit dramatic .. LOL
honestly i think reviews like this review is the problem with the trend car reviews. Its kind of acting like the whole niche this car fills is bad. This car isnt designed for low end places were everyone is parked right on top of eachother its made for decent sized parking spaces probably in a better zip code than the reviewer intended, its designed for family road trips, efficiency is dropped in exchange for reliability, digital safety countermeasures are opted out of for things like ladder frames and overbuilding the whole vehicle making it larger than most other stuff in the uk. This vehicle succeeds for the same reason the jeep grand wagoneer, chevrolet suburban, ford expedition all succeed except its something that has found a way to be successfully imported into the uk car market. This car isnt for the reviewer its for a specific target market of people that do the things listed above. Its just annoying most car reviews are written from the perspective of someone living in a highrise apartment. people in highrise apartments should just be using public transportation so its not even a reasonable target audience to make the perspective of the video from.
Here here, what we are all thinking, but not sharing.
I would buy this one, since it’s not again a Chinese car
I don’t get why you’d pay 70k for this when you can get a new defender for it the same price with new technology. If I needed a rugged car I’d go for a pick up. 😅
It looks wrong. Like a bottoxed defender
Not with who owns ineos
Who is it?
The new LandCruiser will walk all over this brexitmobile
Brexitmobile ? It’s French/ Italian
It’s nice, but I’d choose a second hand real LR Defender to go properly off road, or a Range Rover to drive on the road.
Horrible thing to drive nice transmission Horrible design will drop like a tone of bricks I am afraid
This def isn’t the vehicle for you.
Nice Spelling
@@MOSSFEEN not my problem grenadier is tractor
Speedos anywhere other than in front of the driver, looks like it's a trend here to stay and it's a rubbish idea. Put the Speedo where my eyes are naturally looking!
The steel rims are a turn off and the price is extremely high..
This is like the bootleg version of CarWow’s review of the same vehicle 2 years ago. Get the same British accent narrator with less charisma and jokes. Both talking about the same things. Total rip off.
