3:08 When I was in my poor college years, I relied on two oracle decks featuring magical plants and trees to help "plug in" holes in my ingredient list when I couldn't afford to zip down to a shop and restock a handful of items. I then learned to be more flexible in making substitutions focusing on typical kitchen ingredients, which is now really the foundation of my practice (food magic!).
As time goes on I find that I'm circling back to requiring certain ingredients for certain types of spells. While food magic is inherently practical (taste and health benefits), the relationship I have with the herbs/foods is one of seeing them as ingredients. But with more woo level activities, my relationship with items to be included is more akin to... a friendship. Some sort of personal relationship. Rather than view them as interchangeable ingredients, I see them as particular personalities I would like to invite into circle with me. So, much like planning an elaborate dinner party, I need to plan ahead for certain spellwork so I have time to collect (ie. invite) those I want to circle with. Certain woo "ingredients" are relationships I've spent a long time cultivating, so I want them there. If it takes a few weeks or months to collect them, then that journey becomes part of the spellwork.

Love that you’re posting more frequently! I’m curious about the inherent notion in a lot of witchy content that people should always be “improving” their witchcraft. To me, it struck a shocking parallel to what you had said about not having fun because it’s seen as frivolous. It falls in the capitalistic vein of, “If you’re gonna do something, do it well enough to make money!” Obviously I don’t think that’s what you’re saying, but I’d be interested in a video discussing the constant flow of content promising to help “better” your practice! Is it promoting knowledge for knowledges sake, or is it inadvertently creating a demand for a never ending stream of knowledge that can be commodified! I hope this didn’t come off as rude. Have a great day ❤️

Hi Russell! I’m going to try and keep it up! And yeah-I do think that’s a good thought. There’s a connection between witchcraft and “self-improvement” and the self-help movement that I don’t think we can ignore. I imagine some of that is overlap in the mid-twentieth and century and earlier with things like New Thought and the Human Potential Movement, but I think a lot of it-as you say-is capitalism. Often “self improvement” is somehow linked to productivity. Lots to think about! Might be interesting in its own video!

@@drawingKenaz About a month ago Benebell Wenn made a video about why she shudders at being called "New Age". Where popularized witchcraft (as if Gardner himself didn't start the trend) and New Age shilling overlaps makes some people very uncomfortable, because money often makes people uncomfortable. Early media coverage in the 50s or social media coverage today. A Witch Museum then and websites/classes today. Spiritual gurus then and now with the "right" answers, for a price. There's a reason the elite priest caste developed so rapidly in various cultures.

That was a good video, that will probably disappoint many beginner witches :D Personally, I've long lost any interest in those boring, premade lists of correspondances. I can't remember the thoughts of other people so well. But based on my prior experience, my knowledge and just plain common sense, I can replace anything and whip up some spell at any time, anywhere and with anything. It's the consumerist society habit to pile up things and follow clear instructions of what you need to buy. I prefer my life and my practice to be simple and mainly - effective.

I have a book of correspondences that I use to help find things I don't have to substitute things. My yard is on the edge of a swamp wooded area and I find things in my own backyard sometimes.

I've never had much interest in spell work. I've always enjoyed mystical practice and service to the gods.
That being said, a few years back I went into my kitchen and witchy storage and made a list of everything in the house. I annotated the list with information about everything's magical uses...a kind of materica magica. It was a very useful exercise.

I love the idea of using whatever is already in the home, or even just in the pantry. I did an exercise with my coven a while back where they had to come up with spell ingredients and could only work within a radius of ten feet, lol. Great video, as always.

Thank you for this. I love the idea of thinking of my grimoire as a "magical lab book." I was gifted a nice leather book for Yule and I've still been afraid to sully it with my subpar writing and sketches. But thinking of it as a lab book instead of an Instagrammable work of art is helpful. It gives me the kick in the pants to start actually using the book. Maybe I'll start by cataloging the spell ingredients I have around the house and yard. That would be fun!

As a newbie, it's been kind of confusing to read books that say to practice spells to be a witch, but then they also say that if you're just casting spells for the sake of it then they won't work or you are not serious, so don't bother. "You have to really want or need" the thing in order for the spell to work, or "only for emergencies" or dire need, as you stated. Spell work was definitely my reason for getting into this but I don't even try because folks I had access to put so much fear into it, and then I got analysis paralysis from the mixed messages. Or the spells in books weren't very good or real (like no beginner can be trusted to actually learn how magic works without an infantile guard rail). I basically ended up putting spells on the backburner and focusing on writing my own rituals and practicing that, spell-free. This is a great topic, and I think the discussion about playing effectively to learn should be conveyed more in the beginner /intermediate spaces as well. Thank you for your thoughts, as always.

This is why I tend toward a chaos practice. It encourages experimentation, flexibility, spontaneity, fun, tracking results over time, it really is like being a magickal scientist! I find it opens u up to endless possibilities(obviously respectfully) as opposed to limiting and constricting with many rigid rules and one size fits all approach. I've never liked other peoples rules and have always questioned everything and then after my own experience, testing and time come to what works for me so I guess it's the obvious fit.

My all time favorite thing about the craft is creating my own spells.... now the issue is not actually performing the majority of those spells. For me spellcasting is basivally the scientific method and play. I'm thinking of experimenting with the planetary hours.

@Trinity M the paper from the card comes from the earth. Everything you see around you has come from the earth to the table and chairs you sit at to the metals that make your spoons and forks. This has always worked for me. This method is also good for people who live in cities where there is little nature. The point is to use what you have available to you on hand. There are countless spells that only require paper and a writing tool. Opening a window and calling to the spirits of the plants and asking for their assistance is also enough without even using an image of the plant itself.

I have mostly moved away from the usual stated (books/on line) correspondence lists by growing my own magical herbs/plants 🌿 I started off with a few pots at home but now have a large allotment a short distance from home.
Spending so much time interacting with each plant 🌱 (from seedling to mature plant) enables me to learn how that plant will work with me specifically.
Adding crystals to the soil can also add layers of ways that plants can be useful in my workings.
I also tend to wild plants near my home so that our relationship has developed strongly before I start to forage them. I rarely buy spell crafting herbs etc nowadays apart from occasional items that will not grow well in my area

Love absolutely everything you said! I originally wrote something really long but basically I feel you lol. I'm a big fan of building my own ~database of personal correspondence vs shared correspondence and how it overlaps, and experimenting with different crystals/rocks in the soil of my potted plants and even in "secret" spots in my local woods etc. I am not artistic at all as far as drawing but I love taking pictures of my results with all the experimenting. I just love recording every little thing and everything I've learned and all the successes and failures along the way throughout every aspect of my practice.
I am so disorganized (my "book of spells" = roughly 20 half filled notebooks, a shit ton of loose leaf papers, a sad looking 3 ring binder, so many random phone notes and voice recordings, and word documents on my laptop etc omg) and when I can manage to combine years of mess into something solid I will be so happy omg.
Sorry for the random rant at the end haha, seriously love everything you've said!!

I think that many people aquire a lot of stuff out of insecurities. So I agree with you, that more advanced witchcraft practice is about getting more creative with what you have.
I had to put aside lots of my supplies for a while due to family reasons. Now I'm learning to use very practical everyday and low key items instead. It's fun to limit myself to that. I can sense myself getting so much more secure in my path lately.
I also think that my spellwork has been quite successful, because I have developed skills that a human being needs in the first place to successfully practice just life stuff. Just things about being able to adapt to my surroundings, to trust the process, to see that many different paths will give me the things that I want, to pull myself out of toxic relationships, to reinforce and keep up with healthy boundaries, to meet my needs, eat healthy, stay hydrated, always prefer sleeping (due to having tiny kids), to learn about my psychological patterns and triggers, to use the power of journaling for my mental health, to slow down and take breaks, to focus 100% on mundane stuff if necessary. Etc.
I like the playfulness aspect as well. Having a lot of drama always indicates boundaries issues, whereas playfulness indicates the opposite.
