There is something so beautiful and soulful when learning about others and seeing how differently people can do and celebrate - makes for a much more interesting life!
I think it takes a lot of courage to just up and move to a whole new country, to establish a new life and find a whole new support network... can't be easy Tanya so well done
This is true for many, however, there are some who travel and actually decrease their Cultural intelligence. These are the people who still go about their own way and don't try the new food, explore the new language and customs etc.
It's definitely time that personal accountability came into play - we have access to so much to help ourselves become more educated and understanding. Thank you for this Tanya!
Great talk Tanya and couldn't agree more about perspective - it is everything and that's why it's so important to actually spend time immersing yourself in different cultures to truly understand, not just observe them like a curiosity.
I suspect in our new way of working, our workforce has become much more global with opportunities to walk in various different places for extended times. The future of work is changing in front of our eyes.
it was pretty wild to see how much people changed during the pandemic and for a moment i almost thought it would be for the betterment of humanity but nope, we went straight back to our survival behaviours.
A great question to ponder @Jon Rhome. I have no doubts you could be a global citizen from your armchair, yet there are also those who have no interest or motivation to explore other places and culture, whether it is in person or form their armchairs.
the suggestion that the western world is more individualistic is true, I think, and it also might help explain why the western world has experienced so much conflict during the pandemic
Not all of us have the resources to pick up stakes and go walkabout in the name of adventure and expanding our perspective. Most have mortgages, energy and household bills to pay and children to feed, but that's for the idea.
The ideal - as soon as we started going into lock downs I was curious what the shift would be, would be become more understanding or more segregated? I'm not entirely hopeful but I did find comfort in seeing two opposing sides of the political spectrum come together in agreeance, even if what they were agreeing on was detrimental to the majority. .
I guess this is where the concept of the commonwealth actually comes in handy. Pretty sure I remember there being good policy for all the countries still technically part of it in terms of being allowed entry/visas into one another
A bit off topic but now people of Europe are taking part in smoking ceremonies! So many practices that were once abandoned are now coming back... Hopefully with more respect.
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. I am looking into it right now! So many great cultural traditions - with many who has forgotten (or never knew) why they do them.
I'm really curious as to how the eucalyptus trees represent freedom for gold mine workers. I get the association between the trees and the mines but it's not like they could just take the gold out and keep it for themselves is it?
The eucalyptus trees were by far the safest wood to keep the dangerous mine shafts up, due to the way they wind to the top when growing and are stronger. The opportunity to work in mines and earn to provide gave them hope and thus a sense of freedom.
Thank Delilah. Good point. It was actually quite a buzz. More peaceful and busy than I imagined. I slept on someone's floor on a mattress and often went to the local shebeen (bar) for a social, drink and feed. The people were incredibly hospitable and very protective of me. Many families shared a public tap for their only drinking/washing water.
It's okay, our universe has a funny way of balancing things I think. Soon enough the only choice we will have is to be a global citizen, anything less and you won't survive!
Maybe it's her accent but I'm finding it really difficult to differentiate the tones? I'm so interested in what she's saying but I can't tell what's a question or the end of one sentence and the start of the other. Feels like her pacing is off or something. Just me?
Can I ask where your mother tongue is from as dialects certainly differ around the world. I remember when I moved to Australia I had to change the tone of my sentences as in Australia they go up at the end of a sentence making it sound like a question. As I lived in a few different countries, I've taken on language patterns form South Africa, Australia and Germany...
Thanks, @ekimo. It was not as scary as many may imagine. The people I stayed with were incredible and I mostly felt safe. There was an incident one night with some shooting going on, but even then there was a sense of community between everyone in the house.
The beuty of being a global citizen is you do not need to leave your street! The world and other cultures can be explored form your lounge through various differtn ways. Being a gloabl citizen is not as much about travel as it is about, having respect for others through an understadnign of different viewpoints.
In no time at all we will find crossing paths in all cultures
me too, I hope and pray for it all the time.
@@simaobitencourt Same.
There is something so beautiful and soulful when learning about others and seeing how differently people can do and celebrate - makes for a much more interesting life!
Totally agree Bobby. Curiosity about others is probably one of the best skills we can have.
thanks for emailing me this!
I agree
yes so true
a very interesting life for sure.
Some people have never even thought about the other countries that exist or how they could benefit by experiencing some of those cultures
I think it takes a lot of courage to just up and move to a whole new country, to establish a new life and find a whole new support network... can't be easy Tanya so well done
Thanks. I’ve done it many times. It’s hard, but also exciting. I think it may get harder the older and more established you get.
One of the lucky ones who worked, masked up, with permission to travel throughout the pandemic
Lucky you, @Chelsea!
Travel opens your eyes to the similarities and difference between us.
This is true for many, however, there are some who travel and actually decrease their Cultural intelligence. These are the people who still go about their own way and don't try the new food, explore the new language and customs etc.
Thanks Tanya for sharing your adventures. I enjoyed living vicariously through you.
You should come to our next Diversity and Inclusion Summit in September 2023 and you can be part of the story and hear from many others!
It's definitely time that personal accountability came into play - we have access to so much to help ourselves become more educated and understanding. Thank you for this Tanya!
Imagine what the world could look like if we all step up just a tiny bit more. If we become upstanders, rather than bystanders.
I have never heard of a cultural strategist, I think the USA needs a few of these.
Now that travel restrictions have been eased we can look forward to running with the bulls.
this is a lot more wholesome than i anticipated ....
Personal accountability and education is the only way we move forward.
Being open to different cultures and perspectives is emotionally rewarding.
Yesss!
Thanks for the inspiration Tanya. I'm adding global citizen to my resume.
What a great idea! So many of us are global citizens with our heart in many places.
We live in an amazing world of different cultures and rituals. Love your zest for adventure.
Thank you!
It must be nice to experience a new country that welcomes you openly instead of discriminating.
Love this ladies energy. Intriguing nomadic journey and LSD tripping. Have a listen to find out what that trip meant.
Thanks Gad. I think the world will be a better place, if we all do a bit more regular 'LSD tripping'. Curiosity is key.
Good for you Tanya, must be nice to have these kinds of experiences
I think I was born curious.
Great talk Tanya and couldn't agree more about perspective - it is everything and that's why it's so important to actually spend time immersing yourself in different cultures to truly understand, not just observe them like a curiosity.
Thank you! Curiosity is my favourite trait in people.
Thank you Tanya! This is so brilliantly put together and so helpful!
Thanks Alna, appreciate it.
I have so much respect for this!
Thanks Jorge
Wonderful way to travel, stay for a bit, see what connects and leave or stay!
So sad, but unfortunately true. There were some hero's amongst us, but as you say most of us went back to the comfortable Systems 1 thinking.
Aren't we all global citizens already? Our internet connections give us the joy of travelling wherever we want to go.
A great question to ponder @Jon Rhome. I have no doubts you could be a global citizen from your armchair, yet there are also those who have no interest or motivation to explore other places and culture, whether it is in person or form their armchairs.
Nowadays we have so much access to information and virtual experiences you don't even need to leave your living room to become a global citizen.
I think it's important for most people nowadays to move towards a 'global' mindset. Local thinking is small thinking.
@katemartens Love this. The world is our oyster.
Fabulous! I love this. All done, Tanya.
Love this Tanya
interesting perspective!
the suggestion that the western world is more individualistic is true, I think, and it also might help explain why the western world has experienced so much conflict during the pandemic
This an interesting angle to consider. I am going to think a bit more about this one...
I think the people who are interested in other countries will still find a way to experience them regardless of how difficult the pandemic has made it
I 100% agree. We now have amazing virtual experiences and wonderful travel programs for example.
Let’s all go yarn under a tree with people of different perspectives! 🌏
I love this!
Loved the story of the baby being smoked. Their report would have made interesting reading.
Thanks Piper. Perspective is a wonderful thing.
Not all of us have the resources to pick up stakes and go walkabout in the name of adventure and expanding our perspective. Most have mortgages, energy and household bills to pay and children to feed, but that's for the idea.
The beauty of technology is that you can go walk about anywhere in the worls, right from your lounge room or local library.
The ideal - as soon as we started going into lock downs I was curious what the shift would be, would be become more understanding or more segregated? I'm not entirely hopeful but I did find comfort in seeing two opposing sides of the political spectrum come together in agreeance, even if what they were agreeing on was detrimental to the majority. .
Interesting thought. Do you think we became more segregated or understanding as a direct result of COVID?
I guess this is where the concept of the commonwealth actually comes in handy. Pretty sure I remember there being good policy for all the countries still technically part of it in terms of being allowed entry/visas into one another
Wow... eucalyptus trees and perspective checks.
May you consider a perspective check every time you see a Eucalyptus or maybe even the smell could trigger it.
Very surprised to see her reference Maslows hierarchy of human needs - keep in mind that was established nearly 80 years ago. We've come a long way.
We certainly have Lucas! I hope to have given a more modern spin on this well-known, but old hierarchy as you quite rightly pointed out.
Where to I apply for my global citizenship? Or perhaps we should be thinking bigger? Inter galactic?
Ohh there is a thought. I like all of your suggestions.
This talk rambled here and there and I'm scratching my head wondering where the "Global Citizen" part came in.
I have no idea where this story is going. I guess that's what it means to be a Global Citizen!
haha
Neither do we ;) So many options!
The story of the Uber driver at the 11:22 mark made me angry at his racism.
I could not agree more with what Tanya is saying, There's no excuse in this day and age to not be cultured and embrace multi-culturalism
Love your work Anthony. Unfortunately, the world is rich with excuses.
You can always count on a taxi driver to tell it like it is. I needed a laugh. My mental health is shaky.
Too true, I always get the best perspectives from my drivers.
Would have liked her to elaborate on her time living in Soweto. One of the most violent places in the world, particularly for a white woman.
Thank Delilah. Good point. It was actually quite a buzz. More peaceful and busy than I imagined. I slept on someone's floor on a mattress and often went to the local shebeen (bar) for a social, drink and feed. The people were incredibly hospitable and very protective of me. Many families shared a public tap for their only drinking/washing water.
wow, I didn't realize koalas slept that much...sounds nice!
Who knew Eucalyptus trees were used in mine shafts?
Western Australia isn't exactly the hot bed of accepting diversity!
It's okay, our universe has a funny way of balancing things I think. Soon enough the only choice we will have is to be a global citizen, anything less and you won't survive!
What a twisting winding story. A bit like life.
Not sure what Maslow has to do with becoming a global citizen. Perhaps I missed something.
It's difficult to be self actualised when you're homeless and hungry.
Very true! Hence the steps in the model.
Sign me up! I'd love to be Koala.
I hear you Henrah, sounds like a good life!
Maybe it's her accent but I'm finding it really difficult to differentiate the tones? I'm so interested in what she's saying but I can't tell what's a question or the end of one sentence and the start of the other. Feels like her pacing is off or something. Just me?

The Europeans must have totally freaked out watching a baby being "smoked". If I had a time machine, wow.
I'm totally in awe of this white woman we lived in Soweto. Did she have a death wish?
Thanks, @ekimo. It was not as scary as many may imagine. The people I stayed with were incredible and I mostly felt safe. There was an incident one night with some shooting going on, but even then there was a sense of community between everyone in the house.
I'm sorry to yuck the yum but I feel like this is a pretty privileged viewpoint... not everyone has the money to become a 'global citizen'
The beuty of being a global citizen is you do not need to leave your street! The world and other cultures can be explored form your lounge through various differtn ways.
