I recently started exploring country to try and expand my tastes. it didn't take me long to find Stamey and he's been my favorite so far for a while now

I would not go so low to call his art 'Country'. Country is crap. His art is true cowboy music. I have met him. He is the real deal. He is genuine.

@TheCowboylogic I disagree with the "country is crap". I think contemporary country has certainly lost both it's identity and it's quality. But a lot of country before what we have now I've found is really good.

@Taylor-vz4ot I agree with you. I should have added the caveat 'today's' country. It is actually 'pop' music. I am stuck in a time warp. 70's-90's. Waylon Jennings was the greatest Country artist to ever live. But then the purists will say he wasn't country, because he had drums, electric guitars and a pedal steel....

@@TheCowboylogic I've been dipping my toes in Jennings. It sounds very country to me as someone coming from the blues, rock, metal, and classical lol so idk where people get that idea lol especially since electric guitar and drums have been common place in country for pretty much as long as the modern structure of a band and the instruments required have been a thing lol. People are funny like that lol.
I started my country journey thanks to hearing Stameys song Good Dog. I'm a big dog fan, worked at an animal hospital for years and everything, so songs about dogs click with me pretty easy. And this happened right at the time I was getting curious with country having enjoyed a few of Shania Twain songs already just from growing up in the 90s lol. I then went and listened to the full Good Dog album which is lock step what I think of when I hear the term "country". My second step was his country western album Buckaroo Man which blew me away. His finger picking, I love it.
Been having a great time exploring country ever since.
But yeah, I'm glad we both agree that there's a huge gap of difference between what we're discussing as country vs what's contemporary country or as one person put it "9/11 country" which really is an accurate diagnosis lol. Though I feel it forgets the pop country too. Like early Taylor Swift before she went full pop (never cared much for her music in either genre but hey, she's still doing her thing and big so power to her I guess lol).
But regardless of personal opinions, I can't deny that the musical journey is different for everyone and is wild in spite of that fact lol. I remember finding the band Praxis for the first time, had never heard some truly experimental until then. And that's how I found progressive metal which opened a whole rabbit trail of its own lol. Love music. There really is something for everyone. And love learning about it. It helps me connect with my own instrument more.
