  • The cochlear implant journey can be extraordinarily different for every single recipient. To hear more stories from cochlear implant recipients, check out our testimonial page: www.cochlear.c...
Michael used hearing aids for a long time before he decided to begin his cochlear implant journey. What he discovered immediately upon the activation is that he could pick up sounds that were unavailable to him before, sounds like the buttons on a microwave and the ringing of a telephone.
After her activation, Pam was intimidated. The flurry of new sounds were overwhelming. Jerome is both an audiologist and a cochlear implant recipient. He knew there would be challenges that would present themselves as he got used to his implant, but he still found himself struggling through them. The more each of them got accustomed to their new, respective lives, the more they embraced the fuller sounds of the cochlear implant journey.
The cochlear implant journey is unique for every recipient. The variables that define it include the severity of the hearing loss, the network of support a recipient has, and the recipient’s previous interaction with sound (or lack thereof).
The activation process is one of the more emotional moments of the cochlear implant journey. The experience of interacting with sound for the first time in a long time (or perhaps ever) can be incredibly overwhelming. It’s good to be prepared for the moment, at least as much as you possibly can be. We recommend having the Nucleus Smart App downloaded beforehand. I have a question… if the implant has 22 electrodes and 1 power source for it, then how many of those electrodes “fire” at once?
