  • Let's talk about hand tool woodworking, specifically spokeshaves. This is my favorite tool and was the gateway into hand tools for me when I built my first Windsor chair. Let's talk about the different shapes and sizes and how to sharpen and use them.

Make sure you check out the session I did specifically on casework 3 weeks ago. Also look through my channel, LOTS of talk about dovetails in the last 8-10 years.

For the simple spokeshaves, those without adjusters, I like to tap them against a surface for the micro adjustments, yet this Lie Nielsen seems too delicate or fancy for that...

Hi I just started watching some of your videos lately. You mentioned some websites that carried older tools and one you mentioned was sounded like hyper something. Com. I listen to it three times and I could not figure it out. For about the last 20 years on eBay I have been buying holder tools and the website you mentioned I had never heard of as well as a couple of the other ones. So if you have to read this I would appreciate if you would mention those sites again. Thanks in advance

Hello I also am becoming a big fan of spokeshaves and find using them very calming :) recently I got a Kunz round bottom spoke shave and can’t figure out how to use it. Became so disillusioned that don’t even know if the bevel needs to up or down. I thought this was a good brand but really rough at the edges and the handles are not friendly. That said I am sure it can still work but I have failed. Any guidance ?? Thanks in advance

Watching the Paul Sellers video on spoke shaves, he says this Stanley 151 style, metal bodied spoke shave is supposed to be Bevel Down and the wooden bodied & metal flat style are Bevel Up. Watching this video, I've set my metal body Wood River flat spoke shave using 2o# printer paper & it's now a joy to use. My metal Bench dog round sole spoke shave came with the Bevel Up. Now that I've reversed it to Bevel Down it's much better, bur still needs a bit more "Fettling" (I "Learnt" it as "Futzing" on our side of the pond) as Mr. Sellers calls it.

Have you tried the Veritas Spokeshave (the regular, not the low angle)??. I wonder if it compares more to a Stanley (more aggressive) or to a Lie Nielsen (more of a smoother)

I find it to be more aggressive like a Stanley

Hey Shannon, can you put the tracks name and artist in your descriptions? I like a lot of what I hear, but can't ever find the music. Thanks!

Only one track and that is my opening theme music. That song was composed specifically for me by Underhill Rose.

@@RenaissanceWW, "Underhill Rose"? Er, Roy Underhill have anything to do with it? (I'm a musician, etc. & just curious.)

Hi Shannon, thank you for pointing out the scraper content in the handtool school I will search for it and see if I can find it. However I would like to point out that is way more difficult, for me at least, to consume content from the hand tool school versus youtube. I have the youtube app, I have the premium subscription and I can download and play videos in the background, in the car, etc etc. None of those benefits are available in the handtool school site, it even logs you out really fast and every time I need to go back I loose the position so I never do. Sooooo I have and idea for you: how about considering making a youtube premium subscription that would mirror the free content from the handtool school you choose to share? I would gladly pay a (hopefully ;-) small fee for that and have the content mirrored (or some of it) in a much more easily consumable way and you may even be able to provide a gateway for the wider youtube audience to start tasting the handtool school and eventually open the vast library to more people to share and be part of the community? As always keep up the great work and I hope you find the idea usefull!
