the aspirin scene blew me away i was sitting in the theatre and the only thing on my mind was "how the fuck did they do this? is that dog even real" wow
There are french interviews with the dog's coach on YT, they explain that for this particular scene they trained the dog to play dead first by teaching him how to lay down on the side, then by letting his head feel heavy, then the body. For the eyes it was CGI and the vomit part there was a tube beneath the head of the dog, and someone just had to push a button to make all the nasty stuff come out of the tube. You can find the videos explaining the training labeled as [ "Anatomie d'une chute": on a rencontré le chien Messi qui joue Snoop dans le film ] or [ Les coulisses d'Anatomie d'une chute : Messi, le chien à la Palm Dog ] But there are no English subtitles only French. The OD scene is fucking crazy. The way he pretends to freak out and wake up from the imaginary overdose, sort of stagger to his feet, its truly incredible. Saw somebody mention that this was the best dog acting they had ever seen which prompted me to look him up, and I dont think they are wrong
@@crabstick250 It's not the actress' dog. It's a professional dog who works in movies, with a trainer named Laura. Pure skill. Pure intuition. Pure craft :)
The director said that the vomit was cgi added in post. Which for me doesn't really lessen any of his acting because I assumed it was a tube fed underneath him anyway
@@MrTriplej79 exactly right! Like the reactions don’t seem fake at all or like one of those scene where you can sense the trainer signalling them in the background to do certain actions.

I went to film school and they said to never work with dog's ir children because they cannot provide you with the performances you need, but ckesrly with rhe right handlers you can. they froze his face with CGI the same way they freeze humans when they are trying to play dead but cant hold there breathe long enough or if they are having trouble not blinking
The look, the facial expressions, the attention he pays, the movement of the ears... This is the kind of reaction your dog gives to you, not in a film This dog is phenomenal, congratulations to him and the trainer !
Legit, this was my thought too. I couldn't believe how good the pupper was, the acting in the vomit scene was so good I had to pause and shout at the boy through the screen for doing something so horrible just to prove a point. My dog even reacted at my emotions, so I had to calm him down too! The boy's acting was decent but the dog just blew me away. I genuinely think they should create a new category for Best Performance by an Animal. What a good boy!
I mean realistically he's a child in a absolutely crazy situation trying to figure out the truth behind the death of his own dad, realizing his whole view on his family has been completely wrong. It's not hard to understand where that action came from.
His performance reminds me of Jed, who acted in films like white fang and the Thing but was in tons of movies while he was alive because he was uniquely talented. Most dogs have their tails cgi'd because they can't stop wagging them, but he had a strange stillness about him that made him stand out. This dog has that same thousand yard stare.
i immediately thought of jed when watching this. it's absolutely the expression in the face and the body movement. many dog actors are very well trained but you can tell they are depending heavily on the trainer and due to the precision of commands they tend to look a bit "mechanical" in their movement and faces. most people can't tell and so their acting work is perfectly fine but not exceptional. jed and messi have a way about them that feels like they are interpreting the instructions given by the trainer in their own unique way, the same as a human actor might do with a script.
@@someembarrassingLPs Sorry to reply three weeks behind, but something else Messi here definitely shares with his "phenomenal animal actor" predecessor is his complete lack of looking at the camera. The one time in The Thing where Jed looked directly into the camera, it fit with the story and actually worked to add tension to the scene and make the audience uncomfortable - pushing toward the common compliment Jed was given by his trainers and costars that any move he made, that would be "just something an animal actor will do" to almost every other animal in film, seemed to fit perfectly with the character he was playing. And now, throughout Anatomy of a Fall, Messi's never making eye contact with the camera either. He's fantastic. There are dogs in Horror that can't be focused on directly when playing dead, especially for such long shots, because they can't keep still or make it as believable as Messi managed. Whether that's because he's a Border Collie and Jed was a Wolfdog, or because he and Jed are/were actually aliens disguised as Good Boys, us humans will never know. But they definitely have a special talent for the roles they've been given.

He did two months of training for that scene but I'm still flabbergasted at how he was able to do it. What as seriously impressive performance from Messi.
the most impressive, for me, is him hitting all the marks during the long shot. Like stopping, maneuvering relative to the camera, looking at people etc. 1:26 like thats difficult for a person...
Having had a blue merle border collie I can say no dog is as capable of acting, undertaking tasks or understanding instructions as one of them (if food is a reward).
Something about Messi at 1:12 is so unnerving. It’s a beautiful shot, but it almost makes it feel like he knows exactly what happened but he can’t say anything because he’s a dog. That look in his eyes says all.
