I have had the same gun in stainless for a few years now...... I do long solo camping trips each year and use it as my deep woods and trail gun. It's pretty accurate, lightweight reliable and kicks a out the same as one of my non ported .357 magnums. It WILL NOT accept extra long hard cast ammo as the cylinder is short BUT it shoots underwood extreme penetrators ( best dangerous game ammo IMO) just fine with minimal recoil. The stainless finish scratches easily and gets stained by the powder burn.... I'd recommend the black finish for that reason. But hey, it's a backwoods gun, it's gonna get scuffed up.
I used to conceal carry one of these in .45 lc. High right side hip. No problem. I shot only high power, heavy for caliber ammo. Great shooting, no issues.
I've got one that must be older because it has a classic blue finish. I don't shoot anything but 44 Specials in it, but then I don't shoot anywhere but at the indoor range, and those paper targets don't take a lot of killing. Not a bad little gun for (1) what I use it for, and (2) what I paid for it. I don't know if a previous owner had any trigger work done on it, but it seems to have a pretty decent trigger in both DA and SA. I mostly shoot it DA myself. I don't carry it, but it does fit in a leather holster that will fit a K-frame Smith and Wesson, but won't fit a Colt Python.
Does the speedloaders you bought ,Hks CA -44, run full .44 Rem Magnum cartridges or just .44 specials for speedloading?? I bought two of the from Midway after watching your video I just want to know if the two cartridges are compatible... Great video brother!! I found a used one about a month ago at my local FFL and pawn shop, same finish and I cant wait to shoot it a little.. They have been impossible to find so I had to jump on it when I found it.. It has a little wear and tear on the finish in a few spot, but it s minimal, and that s alright with me.. I always thank the good Lord for blessing me with something completely serviceable and functioning properly..
As we know, that stiff double action trigger is a kind of safety as well as mechanically necessary to turn the cylinder, cock the hammer, etc. I would never recommend thumb-cocking a revolver if the chips are down. All of that adrenaline in you could easily cause you to fire a round that you did not intend to fire. Train a lot in double action mode. It is very satisfying, and it is an important skill to have. Train the way you'll use it, and you'll use it the way you've trained. --Old Guy
I have the stainless version with the newer grips that I really like. I find that the ports really tame the recoil with full power 240 grain loads. I do recommend the stainless versions - I have a 605 with that black finish - it's OK but not nearly as resilient as the stainless. These are absolutely superb with 44 Special +P loads or medium 44 Mag handloads around 1100 fps with a 240 grain bullet - you do have to watch the overall cartridge length though - the longer 250 grain true Keith bullets are just a tad too long when crimped in the crimp groove. But the more common non-Keith type swc versions fit fine.
I down load 180 grain XTPs to about 1100 fps for "street carry" which is when I'm heading back from a day on the trail. On the trail I download 200 gr XTPs to about 1300 for trail carry. Very manageable with both versions 👍🏼
I have the ss version and Love it!!! 44 special rounds are very mild shooting.I changed my grip out to the hogue grip as well although I didn't mind the ribber grip..It's a good shooting fun gun!!
I think this is basically a bored-out version of the model 627 .357 Magnum 4" barrel Taurus Tracker (it's just got a bigger hole in it; it's the exact same size and weight - small in a medium frame for a .44 Magnum)... A model 627 "chambered" in .44 Magnum. I have the stainless steel finish .357 Magnum version; it's a great and balanced revolver with minimal recoil.
I have one of these 5-shot “mystery” Taurus .44’s. No model # anywhere on it. It came with an equally mysteriously elusive scope base. Mine is a 6-1/2” barreled model with a glossy black finish. My question is, what number of a Hogue grip fits yours?
My Tracker in SS would shoot 44 Specials a foot lower at 25 yds. than 44 magnums. Also have a Raging Hunter and a Ruger carbine. My Tracker trigger will break at 10 pounds in double action and 2 and a half pounds in single action. Both are very smooth and clean breaking.
@@switch231 My tracker is lightweight and I use it in a shoulder holster in hikes, fishing, trail riding, self defense. Very accurate.. My Raging Bull I carry in a bandolier holster on the front of my body because the weight of a rifle causes back pain. I use it with a Sightron red dot with 4 variable reticles. No parallax and easier to pick up than a scope sight. No blackout and anywhere you see the red dot is where it will hit. Using a walking staff for support, I can easily hit a milk jug at 75 yds. and I hunt deer with it. I just put Hogue grips on the Tracker altho the ribber grips are not bad. I haven't actually shot with them yet. Is there something specific you want me to compare? I like both guns altho Taurus did not provide a base that fit the Raging Bull and I had to use a Dremel tool on the rib supports to make it fit by removing a little metal. Both are stainless steel. Both are sensitive to bullet weight and may require resighting if you shoot 300 gr. I like the Hornady lever revolution 225 gr. in them.
Looks like you got a good reply above mine here. I've never handled the raging hunter. I've handled the original raging bull in 454. It's a larger frame pistol and weighs quite a bit more. I guess it depends on how your planning on using/carrying them.
@@SWAMPHUNTER644 Thank you! I have the dual cylinder 9mm 357 tracker and I really like it. Was thinking of getting the 44 mag next for my next big gun purchase. I love the looks of the raging bull but think I will stick with the Tracker.
Speed loader for a Charter 44 spl works great Size of the Tracker is a bit smaller than the S&W L frame .. Taurus has its own sizes .. they are compared to the S&W The Taurus 66 is closer to the S&W L frame The Tracker is a compact version of the Taurus 66 frame ... I was thinking about picking one of these up. I sold my 629 Smth during the pandemic and got more for it than I paid new! Now all I have is my Henry Big Boy in 44mag and I miss having it in a small package. I know the recoil will be brutal but with the tamer grips and porting it should be the same or maybe even less harsh than my 3” 629 with the fancy wood grips!?! Seen it for $480 getting it for under $400 is an absolute steal! Most places it’s over $500 now.
I own the ss tracker 44 mag . love it. double and single action trigger pull really good .the finish i don’t like. it’s easy to scratch. a mat finish that looks like over stainless steel by my scratch’s . but my weapons i shoot the most has dings . scratch’s anyway so it don’t matter . when it gets really bad with scratch’s I’ll tak off that top finish, buff out the ss and that would be fine with me. I would still buy another just like it in either finish. the last time I remember shooting it with my reloads at 20 yards was on center with 2 shot inside a 3/4 circle. with my health issues I thought it was pretty good . nana and papa aka the hunter wishing you well.
I know 44 mag has been used to take Grizzlies before, so I'd say yes. Personally, I'd see it as the minimum I would want for hunting or protection in large bear territory.

That can be a problem, especially if you had your thumb up twards the top of the cylinder. Since going to a thumbs forward grip years ago, it's just habbit now.
I've carried it on overnights and it was fine. Just make sure to find a decent holster that works with your pack too. I use an old police drop leg style holster for it. That way the gun hangs below my hip belt
Found a 357 mag. Have same "questions" about the cylinder release and finish. Any cerekote place recommendations? But can't complain for a 7 shot 357 for the price.
I forget which side of the state your on. Easton Firearms refinishing is a good one in the east. I use a guy in State college here. West or up around Erie and I'll have to ask around.
The Taurus Tracker is a good design with the built in compensator and heavy barrel. I would get it in stainless steel without the Parkerized black finish. Can it handle the Garrett Cartridges of Texas special for 4 inch barreled 44 magnum defense from bears revolvers? The hardcast Hammer head bullet weighs 310 grains and runs at 1000 fps so loaded. Can you test fire it?
The chambers are short on it. From Taurus, it says it won't handle 300gr loads do to the oal. I tried it with my 300gr Hornady xtp reloads and no go, to long oal. I'll look up the load your talking about and check their oal. If it looks close, I have no issues trying them.

This is some great stuff but it must have crazy recoil. It is medium frame. I prefer classic model 44 or raging bull 444, both are big frame, heavy revolvers capable of firing hot bear loads and the recoil is pretty mild for this caliber.
Frame size. The tracker is smaller and lighter. The down side is it only holds 5, where the raging bull holds 6. Also recoil is more significant in the tracker, since it's lighter.

I've had this gun for about 4 or 5 years now with I don't even know how many thousand rounds through it. Mostly good, my finish has no problems. Everything in it still works just fine. The only issue (since the beginning) is that it doesn't always set off the round. Typically I have 1 misfires per 50rds. I pretty much always shoot Winchester .44 because that's usually what stores have plenty of in stock. So maybe some of it can be blamed on the ammo, but not all of it. I was at the range today and fired off a box of 50rds. Fitting my statistic, one round didn't go off. When I looked at it you could clearly see the mark where firing pin missed the primer. It'just too light for such caliber. Besides, tracker has only a medium frame, i don't think it is strong enough for hot bear loads .44 mag. I'm buying .44 mag taurus as well, but i already excluded tracker from my list. It'll either be a raging bull or classic model 44, both in big frames.
True, in fact the chambers are too short for a lot of the heavier weight bullets (my 300gr xtp reloads don't fit). I got it because it was lighter than many other .44's so it works for what it is.
Thanks, I've looked at them before. I've heard of some timing issues with them from people too. Still, wouldn't mind checking one out, but I kinda worry about that one. Maybe in the future though.
Waiting to see someone shear off a transfer bar in one of these taurus reviews because of how they dry fire the things. Seen it happens alot with friends in person, one day it will happen in a review as many tend to do it.

True, in fact the chambers are too short for a lot of the heavier weight bullets (my 300gr xtp reloads don't fit). I got it because it was lighter than many other .44's so it works for what it is.
Three reason behind this gun and the 69 was the idea otf carrying your favorite cartridge comfortably
@@TheTruth-sd8ey I agree it's to small a frame.
Just subed to your channel...check out the Taurus 608, .357 (8) shot!
Thanks, I've looked at them before. I've heard of some timing issues with them from people too. Still, wouldn't mind checking one out, but I kinda worry about that one. Maybe in the future though.
Go stainless.
44 May review??????
Please remember, don't drink and edit people. 🥴
I would never get any editing done then.
@@2-Live-Moo me neither.
Thumbs down my friend...with this 44 load not a big deal.. but if you go with something hotter you gonna get hurt...
It's common sense the manual says not too and the cylinder it's shorter meaning longer rounds won't fit that meanness 300+ grains are no go
Waiting to see someone shear off a transfer bar in one of these taurus reviews because of how they dry fire the things. Seen it happens alot with friends in person, one day it will happen in a review as many tend to do it.
I saw one of these at the store. Not a big fan of Taurus though.
