Everything about this chair is pleasant, the only thing I'd make a note of is that the low back may be an issue for some. For me, it's comfy and sits just right.

Thank you for sharing! I made one as a gift for my Mom, and now I am making two more for around the house today. I didn't change a thing from the design, just finished it with linseed oil. Interesting how its design has a mysterious origin...

an angle cut on the bottom of the legs and a rounded edge on the front of the seat will make this chair much sturdier and more comfortable.

FYI: Some people say they have been using threaded rods and acorn nuts instead of wire cable, with good results.
Haven't built one of these myself yet, but it sounds like a good idea.
I agree with acorn nuts and threaded rod. I used to build these exact chairs 25 years ago. They were made from maple 1x2 from home depot. Then oiled with watco. They look great but are very heavy. I still have a few in the shed.

For those that don't have a table saw, to rip boards, you can purchase pressure treated deck balusters that are ready to go from your local lumber yard (Lowes or Home Depot). I just made a chair last night, using them, and they support 215 lbs easily. I highly suggest drilling the holes one size larger than the rod or getting a drill press to ensure accuracy. if they aren't aligned perfectly you will need a drill to spin the rod through.

Does anyone know of a place online that I can buy the wire? I can't seem to find the wire anywhere (not at home depot or lowes, online, etc. upon searching).
home depot sells a heavy wire for use along the bottom of chain link fences. Good luck!
