NEW SPARKBIRD SONG RELEASED
Had this randomly recommended to me and I am just CAPTIVATED by your lyrics. So many excellent turns of phrase like "the wasteland which henceforth shall be referred to as your place", and I love the way that the rhymes aren't synchronized to any particular beat - it made it feel less like lyrics and more like poetry that happens to be sung
Lyric analysis time :D
According to Wikipedia, *"Live by the sword, die by the sword"* is a proverb in the form of a parallel phrase, derived from the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 26:52): "Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword." This is interpreted to be a warning against violence: "Those who are violent will die by violence."
But, this song adds the "love by the sword" which in context can be interpreted as "loving violently". I interpret this as the the captain being abusive.
One more interesting thing about the captain: There's a maritime tradition saying that a captain should, in the case their ship goes down, devote their last moments to saving everyone on the ship and only then save themself, as the captain holds ultimate responsibility for the ship and its passengers.
This captain is a corrupted captain because he neglects his duties and *"leaves you trapped in the cockpit"*, trying to save his own ass instead (but also dying because his own cruel ways prove to backfire). Now, I think this is entirely a metaphor: This 'captain' is just a very cruel and selfish person.
Extending this to what I interpret to be a toxic relationship:
*"If the double-row eighteen-cylinder / Air-cooled radial engine / Is not enough to tip you off"* feels like a warning that didn't quite register to the captain's new lover, despite the long description making the red flag seem quite huge and obvious.
*"When a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher aerial courtship / Nosedives in a blitzkrieg"* describes a situation that went to shit very quickly (nosediving into "blitzkrieg"- that being a war method that emphasizes on finishing the job as quickly as possible- here I believe that it's referring to a tumultuous relationship).
*The Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher* , according to Native American tribes (and btw I'm not familiar with those so take this with a grain of salt), symbolizes the power of transformation to overcome difficult situations (Cherokee), balance and grace (Comanche), and wisdom and intuition (Kiowa). We also tend to associate birds/flight with freedom. Now, the bird is directly connected to "courtship" being pursuing a lover. This brings the image of a usually strong and free person suddenly finding themself in an abusive relationship.
*"Once you elope with the captain / You'll leave on a sordid honeymoon"* is yet another warning, saying that, if you get involved with him, you will be left feeling hollow and sad in a position (the relationship) that should usually be happy (the honeymoon as a reference to a fresh, happy relationship/marriage)
I also really like the references to weaving/sewing when his lover is mentioned. This suggests some fragile, handmade flair to the lover's actions and environment.
You can see this in the first verse: *"Before he slips you off the needle / Drops you into unstitched space".* Here's a reference to knitting, I assume, but it doesn't matter which kind of fabric-making is referenced here. Either way, the lover ends up abandoned in an insecure place (because when you make fabric and leave the project without making a finishing knot, the project can unravel itself at the slightest tug. *"The wasteland which henceforth / Shall be referred to as 'your place'"* feels like the captain speaking- an abuser may make the victim feel like they don't deserve anything better.
*"You can tell the backyard bomber / Never helmed a cargo crate / He croaks out undoing and doom / To the wishful safety net / You jeopardized your life to loom"* is also a very interesting verse. It seems that the "backyard bomber" is telling the person that their attempts at reaching safety are futile, or is otherwise discouraging them. The "wishful" safety net may also tell that their attempts at creating safety for themself are optimistic or naive. However, the "bomber" may be giving unsolicited advice, as the "Never helmed a cargo crate" might mean that they never went through something as burdening as the person.
*"Always the last and never the least"* might be referring to the saying "last but not least" meaning "although the thing was named last, it doesn't mean it's less important".
*"Always the fast and never the feast"* might refer to religious fasting (not eating for a certain amount of time, for example in Islam) and celebratory (sometimes also religious) feasting. In this way, fasting is sacrificial for a deity, and feasting might be indulgence possibly in the name of/provided by a deity. This line is saying that the person makes more sacrifices than they get in return.
*"Always the cult of domesticity / Always the jolts of electricity / Always surpassed and never decreased / Always amassed and never released"* these lines belong together in my opinion, since the "always _, never _"-scheme is stretched among multiple lines here instead of just one. I feel like they are referring to chaos in their own home (might originate as passion ("jolts of electricity") but later possibly evolving into anger), maybe even as a housewife stuck in her duties, the stress which is never reduced; the burden is never lifted.
*"Always the past controls your mind / Never the peace you hoped to God you'd finally find"* the person is haunted by a traumatic past and they're literally or metaphorically praying for peace and a chance to rest.
*"And when he dies by the sword / He’ll reward you for your obedience"* means that the promised reward or relief is held out until his end: It's never close enough. However, the reward of peace is granted when he dies because he was the violent one all along.
Finally, *"Even as the back of the hand still burns / From the last airstrike"* paints an image of lingering pain after the recent battles.
Overall, this song probably has my favorite lyrics of all time :>

I really really love your "Actually you were a humongous FUCK" songs. I think they satisfy that anger of abusive or shitty relationships so well, because they don't fail to adress the little longing and that loss- this one is more centered in that than One-way Sea (the other one I was thinking of), but with the rythmn it still sounds so pissed, so betrayed.
