    That level of minor crash happens to me atleast once a month. No way I would ever consider carbon.

      Understandable. But what the video doesn't show is the exact physics of this crash at work. Basically, if you could imagine doing a drop of 6 feet on to a handrail at four feet and landing squarely right on the downtube. There is a lot of force behind that, especially when you weigh as much as I do!

      My Knolly takes so much abuse. I've tumbled down slabs in Squamish. Testament to both my riding skills... and a well made alloy bike. Knolly takes their alloy seriously. I have to work on my skill.

    Damn I’ve seen a half dozen similar carbon strikes in the last 2 months. I was really on the fence with my last bike - aluminum and better components or carbon and lower end components. I’m feeling more and more confident that I went with aluminum.

      You're right, maybe I should do a review on it, I'll see what I can do. But, in the meantime, I will tell you that I LOVE this bike. It has been so fun. There were two big differences that I noticed right away, 1. When pedaling over chunk the platform just feel planted, 2. It feels safer going faster. Especially when you start heading downhill. That's just my opinion, but I am in love with this bike. Hope that helps.

    Best I can tell from my experience, Carbon is stronger than an equivalent aluminum frame for the forces it is designed to take. Stresses around the head tube and BB areas and reinforcements around suspension locations. However, they are weaker in other areas for the random things that can occur like this crash, or say falling over in a rock garden.
    For me, I live in a rocky area and have made the transition back to aluminum and steel for this reason.

    That sucks mate. Glad you got it sorted. I have been riding for 20 years and was considering my first carbon frame. But seeing this happen to a quality frame at relatively low speed has put me off. I have always had an alloy frame with dents in them and ridden them with confidence they won't disintegrate. Hope you enjoy the new bike.

    MANY years ago i had a Cannondale carbon hardtail and i cracked the top tube, there was/is a place in CA that can repair it but i ended up selling the frame for a decent price.
    Still sucks you had to pay at all, even crash replacement is probably 50% off so a 3 grand frame is still $1500.00. I am looking at a 2021 115 T-2 with XO/XX1 build, has everything except carbon wheels

    @MTBFreeks 4 роки тому +3

    Man bro I have seen so many carbon frames that are trash after incidents like this people always talk about how carbon is stronger as far as stress before failure that's true!!! But carbon is alot like granite hard as hell but chips easy as crap so when I gets a chip all of the structural integrity is gone!! Had a buddy land top tube to toptube with another bike on his DH bike after a 15 foot drop!! It was a HELL of an impact it bent the top tube... He rode I with zero issues racing and hitting HUGE stuff on it with zero issues!!! This is why I won't ride carbon! Yes it resist breaking better than aluminum however when it scraps or tags something and chips away the structural integrity is lost... That isn't acceptable in my opinion in a sport where this stuff is apart of the hobby

    • @LunchRide
      @LunchRide  4 роки тому +1

      I understand that, but the ride quality is so much better, imo. Plus, I’ve been riding it for years and this is the first time something like this has happened. Double plus, my Giant Stance (aluminum) cracked and that was on a mild jump. And when aluminum goes its sudden and dangerous.

    • @MTBFreeks
      @MTBFreeks 4 роки тому +1

      @@LunchRide I agree when Aluminum goes bad, it goes violently bad! And if you don't crash often probably is alot better for your case however I am 2 years on a bike and still not through with my crashing phase... So all the little scraps and rock chips would freak me out and have me second guessing and riding even more cautious then I do... And one thing I have learned personally is riding scared is way more dangerous then about anything else. I think it goes without saying that buying a good strong bike like Yeti, Evil, or whatever is a portion of equation but warranty is the biggest part in my opinion so where my Devinci offers a lifetime warranty or Santa Cruz that's about the only way I could see going carbon until I get better on the bike. BTW I love your channel and would like any pointers you could give on making better videos on my personal Channel maybe you could check out our latest video and throw me some advice and constructive criticism??? @@LunchRide Do you feel, even after this, that carbon is worth the extra price tag for a couple of pounds? Do you think that crash would have ruined an aluminum frame, or not? The video might not look as violent as it was on the bike. I dream of owning a top tier carbon bike, but this would devastate me. A replacement wouldn't be an option. Thanks for another great video, and I hope to see you around some day.

    • @carloswright
      @carloswright 4 роки тому +2

      Did you look into carbon repair? Would you trust a repaired frame?

    • @LunchRide
      @LunchRide  4 роки тому +2

      I feel that the benefit of carbon is not just the weight savings. What I really appreciate about carbon is the feel of the ride. The inherent compliance of carbon really dampens the chatter of the trail. Plus the two pounds or so feels very noticeable when its underfoot.
      It does cost more, however the price difference is getting less and less all the time. But regardless of that, I do feel that it's such a better ride that it's totally worth it.
      The crash and the way that I hit the tree, I really do feel that an aluminum frame would not have done very well either. Its hard to predict, right? But I can imagine that an aluminum tube would have just stuffed that off. And, of course, the carbon was cracked, but it was not a catastrophic crack. I mean, I could still be riding it now, it just would have gotten worse over time.
      As far as repair... if I didn't have an option with a crash replacement, like if I was a second owner or otherwise out of warranty, I would have no issue with having carbon repaired. A lot of places can repair it and have it look exactly like an original frame.

    • @carloswright
      @carloswright 4 роки тому +1

      I love my Yeti. I've ridden the hell out of it in this last year with tons of crashes with nothing but paint chips. I fully plan on another Yeti when the time comes. This video really doesn't show the physics behind how this crash happened. I know it looks like I lightly brushed this tree but it really was a direct full-on, all-my-weight, into the down tube. I don't think an aluminum frame would have faired much better, honestly. Yeti was reasonable and very easy to deal with. I fully endorse Yeti, and I believe that carbon bikes are a superior ride in terms of weight and feel. Carbon may crack, but welds crack all the time, so...

      Lunch Ride Thanks. What about pressed fit bottom brackets? I never paid it any mind until I got my SC, when it was mentioned as a selling point because it would not make noise. Can press for BB be fixed or is your frame tied to the outer rings, and you get what you get. Thanks again.

    • @LunchRide
      @LunchRide  4 роки тому +1

      @@MarkwoodFilms Press fits do have the potential of creaking IF they are installed improperly. Threaded BBs are nice and why Yeti doesn't use them, I have no idea. But all of the mountain bikes that I've had have been press fits and when there was creaking it was always the cranks and never the shell itself. So, I wouldn't worry about it. My two cents, for what it's worth. Hope it helps.

      Short of it is: I love my Trance Advanced, but I really love this Yeti. It's like upgrading to a sports car. But when I broke the Yeti and had to ride the Trance again, I was completely happy to do so. I will post an in-depth review within the next few weeks!

      I’ve been riding it for years and I love it. It’s such a great feeling ride. My aluminum old Giant Stance cracked on a mild jump once so I wouldn’t discount carbon.

    The old Trance would have taken a chunk out of that scrawny tree and kept on shredding....Think I will take mine for a spin tomorrow! Gave you a thumbs up even though I think you were able to manual better on the Trance.........dick. :-)

      Ha! I don't know about the Trance and the tree match up.🤣 I love my Trance Advanced but I do feel like the Yeti is more stout. I'll get those pesky manuals one day.....

    That is not a big crash and it's not even a sharp rock to blame that. A frame should take repeated hits like it.

    Yeti frames throw themselves between you and impacts with trees. It should be listed as a feature... get me the marketing department!!!
