Hi Jenny Was wondering about covering the seeds in the garden beds with the leaf mulch. Isn't this effectively planting them much deeper than is recommended and won't it suppress their growth like it does the weeds? I usually either dig it in at planting time or, if it hasn't broken down enough, pull it back and only put it back round the seedlings once they've germinated.
Last year, the tomato hornworm stripped one of my jalapeños. They loved my tomatoes and hot peppers. My husband and I really enjoyed our late night black light hunts for them. Our neighbors probably thought we were crazy but we are ok with that. Lol!
Jenny if you inter plant basil with your tomato plants that helps keep the horn worms away. The smell of basil masks the smell of tomatoes so the horn worm can’t detect the tomato scent. I just learned this last year and I had great success keeping those ugly little pests away. Might be worth a try?🌷💚🙃

I know that you have hot humid summers, similar to where I live in sth east Qld, Australia. During and after our flooding rains this year, we have an overwhelming infestation of both leaf/stem and root mealybugs, and then black sooty mould. I have lost most of my container plants and many of my garden plants are infected. I have just discovered hydrogen peroxide kills them but I need large scale help. Do you have any suggestions?

I've found it's best to look for all sizes of tomato hornworms as they start out as little worms and grow to the humongous size after they eat the tomato plant. Bluck! I hate/love squishing them! And their poop is a good indication of where they are! Bluck again!

What do you do with your hornworms when you pick them off? Sometimes I toss mine in the woods, hoping a bird will eat them. Sometimes I drop them in a bucket of water.
I would use an organic blend specifically for vegetables. I really like the options from Black Gold like their Ultra Outdoor Planting Mix. You should be able to find their products throughout the country at Ace Hardware stores.
Jenny - do you think the plastic-free pots will hold up for a couple of years? I’m wondering if we can use them for potting up seeds a couple of times and then plant them directly in the ground. I currently reuse the plastic PW pots to pot up my peppers, etc, and I reuse them multiple times before they break up too much.

Even renters can have a veggie garden. I live in a rental house and garden exclusively in grow bags. (I like the Back to the Roots 1x3 felt beds and have four of them and just purchased a 10 pack of the Vivosun heavy duty 15 gallon grow bags.) If you rent and can’t put in your own garden beds, grow bags are a super cost-effective way to go and they really work. I had yellow squash plants last year so mammoth that my neighbor asked if I was growing some kind of mutant squash. I had two tomato plants and ended up with so many tomatoes, I froze enough to make two batches of tomato soup this winter. And currently I’ve got kale, lettuce, and bok choi I’m harvesting. I start many of my plants inside using a grow light and a 72 plug self-watering tray. So don’t say that you need big raised beds to have a garden. Grow bags can definitely be your solution.
Those biodegradable pots are a good idea. But maybe the next step should be towards working on reducing peat in composts...watching so many gardeners online from North America and very few seem to be attuned to the damage peat harvesting causes. Europe has slowly started banning peat and at long last the compost companies have started taking action.
I have that garden marker as well, used it for the first time with my fall garlic, really happy with it compared to the pencil and sharpie I tried before. I had my first tomato horn worm two years ago, was disgusting.
Oh wow ok. Looking at your garlic vs mine tells me something has gone horribly wrong with my planting haha! All of the tops of my soft necks are super thin and wispy and floppy :(

Jenny, another idea to help with the composing of the new PW pots, put them through a paper shredder then add to the plant bed or composer/area. I shred everything at home that I can before I put it in the recycling bin. I would shred these separately and work in the potting soil I have to do patio gardening now. Love these!
I love how your space looks. So pretty and inviting. I would love to have a space like this. I have so many deer that I can’t just plant anywhere. I'm growing Garden Gem for the first time ever this year. I'm hoping to get tomato seeds started next week. I just got my pepper seeds going Friday under grow lights, and apparently peppers take longer to germinate than tomatoes.
My experience with PW tomatoes didn't turn out too well. The plants were beautiful. Strong sturdy and large BUT we didn't like the taste of the tomatoes. Sad because the plants did so well. Several friends found the same, tasteless. Let us know what you think.
@@sallypoppema9575 Yeah. That can be a concern. This is my first year, so if I don't like them, I just won't grow them again. Tastes can surely differ. Garden Gem has several reviews stating people like the flavor of them. I'm growing 7 kinds of tomatoes, including two of my all time favorite kinds. We'll just can them if they aren't good sliced tomatoes.

The peppers do take a few days longer to germinate, so just be patient and they will come along in just a bit!
