    I have heard this before, but it always was just fairly level and "so-so". Here I find the music and soul together -- something that goes so much further than the notes simply being played. Thank you for this.

    I love this piece and I have never heard it played more beautifully. Not only your performance, but also the marvellous sonoritiy of your instrument move me to tears. Absolutely beautiful, Philip! And though I also cherish the modern synthesizer as a means to perform (certain) works of J. S. Bach, with this rendition I am inclined to say (with Mozart): the church organ is the sovereign of all instruments.

    Wash me thoroughly from my wickedness, and cleanse me from my sin.
    For I acknowledge my faults, and my sin is ever before me.

Your playing sends goose bumps down my spine because you do not just PLAY music but you LIVE it in the fullest sense. Best wishes dear friend.

    I once heard this piece played on a dark winters evening in Salisbury Cathedral. It seems to have some strange haunting power that is only capable of being fully appreciated on a church organ in a large Cathedral. How amazing that a large organ can produce a soft deftness of sound when speaking into into a cavernous building especially one built in the 13th century. A few other chorales come close to it but this one unique. Any chance of Bach's Arioso sometime. You are very lucky to be able to sit in the comfort of your home at the end of the day and play these beautiful pieces.

    • @philipaggesen
      @philipaggesen  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, "strange hauting power" is a very fitting phrase to describe this piece. When I had to select this organ I need that Nancy probably would be the most fitting: it had the biggest reverb of all and I thought that the simple melody would have the biggest effect when put in a large cathedral.

    This is so beautiful and I love your slow tempo. I have just arranged it for four cellos. All of the scores I found online, including the original manuscript, had only half notes in the melody. I wonder what edition you were using if, like you said in a previous comment, you did not put in any ornamentation yourself.

    • @philipaggesen
      @philipaggesen  4 місяці тому

      Hi! So lovely to read your comment. My rendition comes from a score I found on IMSLP. I think it was from Pierre Gouin and the choice of making no ornamentation just comes from my own personal analysis of the piece being simplistic to almost an "insane" amount. Therefore I feel an "obligation" to keep it simple in my personal interpretation.
      This is of course only my personal choice :)

      @@andre26071955 I know the HIP ideas, no question, but in this case the slow and legato version makes sense, for a funeral or sub communione. The human heart was not different this time. And the result is better. The quick interpretation is perhaps better from a dogmatic position, but it sounds a little bit like a fair organ.

    • @philipaggesen
      @philipaggesen  2 роки тому +2

      It's funny with this chorale prelude. I find that the interpretation really depends on this organ and room you play in. When I had to select what organ I would do this rendition I thought that Nancy probably would be the most fitting: it had the biggest reverb of all and I thought that the simple melody would have the biggest effect when put in a large cathedral. I know that it isn't the historic correct way of doing it put thought that I would try something different.

    Dear Philip! Your performance of one of my favorite works of the great composer was wonderful. But why you started improvising with the theme is unclear to me. And I didn't like it. I'm sorry if I offended you. But I always say what I think. And that's probably bad.

      Dear Philip! Please excuse me. Maybe I'm wrong. I thought that the original is unadorned in the theme. I downloaded two versions of the notes from the Internet. One for piano is two lines, and one for organ is three lines. There are no decorations in the theme. But in any case, of all the performances that I have watched, your performance is the best!
