Assuming the customer isn’t hurting for money, I can understand wanting to replace all 4 sensors. Three of them may be original to the car so the customer is guessing they will be back at the shop soon.

This video triggered some suppressed rage for me because I used to own an 03 G35 and if I could've drove that car off a cliff I would've. Had nothing but weird electrical problems. Parts weren't cheap and it was an absolute nightmare to work on. It always burned up coils on the passenger bank of the engine. The day i went to trade it in it was missing on the way home. Luckily it was so intermentent that it stopped missing on the way to the dealership 🤣. I hope it ended up in the crusher. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk

I worked at a GM dealer for a while. Helped put parts away. I saw multiples of the same AC Delco part made in different countries. Countries of manufacture included the US, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan. All the same part number.
That screw on those Irwin wire strippers is adjustable. It's an eccentric and has like 4 positions of different grip. They are top quality strippers when used properly. That thing will rust away into a shit heap before it needs O2 sensors again. It's already 3/4 of the way there.
Honestly I share your outlook on consistency. I mean if they aren't consistent on something small like a thread anti-seize, what else are they not consistent on that would not be a small issue. That's how I think about it.

I have a 98 camry as a work car and the driver door would always close on its own just like this infinity. I got a few of the things that hold the doors open from a salvage yard and replaced the one on my door. No more door closing in on me all the time. 😃
Ray I never broke down on a test drive but I did crash a customers vehicle coming back from a test drive when I was at a autobody shop. It was winter in Chicago, snow and ice one customer was picking up their vehicle that just had the drives door repaired. When I pulled in the parking lot of the shop I hit a patch of ice and slid right into the same door that was just fixed as the owner watched. It cost me just a rental car for the customer as I did the body and paint work on both vehicles. The shop owner was going to pay for it but I told him I screwed up and I will pay for it.
That's what a real man does well done on doing the right thing, not to be a dick, but your right it's your fault sorta minus the ice, I respect how you got the customer a rental and fixed both, that is the right thing to do, I respect all of that some would not do that or have the shop pay for it. I give you a firm hand shake for your honesty and integrity to fix your half mistake.

The customer was not really mad as he seen what happened and when I walked in the office the owner of the shop was just shaking his head, the vehicle owner was laughing a little then said there was nothing I could of done differently due to the ice. I have always stepped up when I damage or accidentally break something on a vehicle it's the right thing to do.

Coming from someone that owns a 2004 g35 coupe for the last 12 years I know all about those heavy doors not wanting to stay open. I think I have a shoe imprint on my door panel from so many times of me wedging my foot against it to keep it open.

I think the 1st sensor was attempted to be installed by someone before and they applied the never seize. Probably didn't fit or fix their problem and they returned it.
Nice work Ray. That Infinity is so rusty underneath, and the fact that you weren't able to obtain the correct connector, you chose the best option by cutting the new connector off and connecting the wires together. Excellent fix on this old Infinity and I'm sure the repair will outlast the car. 😉
I hate replacing O2 sensors. They always fight me. Last one I did was on a road trip to Seattle. CEL came on, scanned it, figured out which one it was, bought one for double the price from a small town Napa, bought the socket and ratchet, which ended up not working. Found a wrench in my travel tote and finally got it done on the side of the road because the Napa said it was against their rules to do it in their parking lot. Lovely. I can say it helped my mileage. Went from 12mpg to almost 14! That's a lot for a Vortec 8100.

your stripper is the correct kind....my favorite. there is a tension adjustment for the grab side you can use to make it grab the strip off side stronger.
What did I learn from this video? That it's nothing short of a miracle that modern cars function on any level at any time! Also, thanks a lot Ray! (sarcasm) Now whenever I drop anything, I say "gravity"!
I have been afflicted as well. Dropped a riser at work the other day and said "Gravity". It is contagious. Now we need a shirt with just the word "Gravity" on it.
I learned from a master mechanic (summer job in college) when wrapping black tape to do a slight stretch on the tape after each wrap. Trust me after fixing/rewiring lights on 30 semi trailers, he was right, if you stretch it after each wrap, it will stay on tighter long term.
Hey Ray, Thanks for all your videos and something to laugh with you too! for the repair though (solder connections) use crimp and seal butt connectors. The sensor side wire is actually stainless steel stranded and solder doesn't stick to stainless steel. Otherwise very meticulous work!
i worked in the oil field the best anti seize is a joint compound called best o life 2000 its copper based high temp i used it on all my threads on my truck even after 5 years any nut or bolt with the compound on it comes right off with no effort best stuff ever works great on exhaust bolts, wampum is even better lead based awesome stuff

Ray - Kudos on your quality of work you put into every vehicle, despite the fact this rust bucket Infinity already has a foot in the grave and approaching it's complete life expectancy (Half Life on most Asian cars is 6-7 years). You are an asset to that shop.
Ray, you could see if you could get your hands on a small high frequency or induction shrink tool... they're perfect and very quick with heat shrink material, takes only seconds and no risk of melting stuff around it. I don't know exactly what they are called, but I've worked at a confectionery during high school and there they used them to heat seal wrappers around the sticks for lollipops. It looks like a soldering iron but with a hook made out of a coil on the end.
Hey! As an early Ford Explorer owner I identify with that! 😂 It's actually more of the plasticky bits that fall off, but at 30 years old that's par for the course with most vehicles of that era.
As a DIY tinkerer, i would have just put some heatshrink over the 4 connectors so they couldn't short and be done with it. And then promptly forget what wire goes where and take hours figuring that out
The owner most likely had you replace them all because he knew you would be able to fix the wiring issue and if any of the other ones broke that you would have to know how to replace them better than whoever did before whether it be the owner or another shop as always you did a wonderful job I love to hear your rambling on different issues keep up the great work as always I wish I had a mechanic as trustworthy and honest as you are you do the mechanics of the world a great deed showing that there are people in the world that you can trust thank you

Yes, he is near Sarasota Florida. I am in Michigan and we don't see many 100,000+ miles on them as they are rusted out. I used to be a lead diagnostician at the Chrysler headquarters and boy, were diagnostics were a PITA before we had scan tools! Like 1985 to 1990! Diagnostics is an art and Ray does a great job.
Ray, what would we all do without your daily updates. I have a suggestion and one you may already know, amalgam tape. Like a fabric but thicker and can be squished to make a waterproof seal. Used for development testing on articulated dump trucks in harsh environments to protect connectors. Amazing stuff. Anyway, keyboard warrior feedback completed, switching off ...peyeeew.
That "junk" wire is actually high temperature teflon insulated, and used extensively on aircraft and automotive applications such as O2 sensors. Great video.
... and it also looks way crappier... I personally hate ppl using flame on heat shrinks (i even hate myself when i'm forced to do so when out in the field withoit my gas soldering iron - since the exhaust hole can be used lil field heat torch)
Nice splice and tape job there Ray, I would recommend getting some Scotch 130C Liner less Splice tape that's self volcanizing and overwrap that with some Scotch 33+ or 88

That fancy little hose remover, I also have in my tool box. I bought it, along with some other tools for the same purpose of removing the plastic snaps that are used throughout cars to hold body parts on. That and an assortment of the plastic fasteners to replace those that get broken. I really like that tool for poppenz out, the little plastic fasteners, but never until now, thought to use it as a hose remover. I shall try that one day when the opportunity affords itself.
A 1 hour video? Ok, let me like this first, because I already know this is going to be a good one :) Edit: see? 2 minutes in and we already got knob gags. This will be great.
With the mileage on that car I'm actually OK with replacing all four sensors. Yes, it's a bit pricey but after about 150K they're all worn out anyway. The car will run better...have seen it many times. Also, don't be fooled, on A/F ratio sensor cars the downstream sensors do actually contribute, somewhat, to fuel control in addition to monitoring the cats.
Nice diagnosis and repair, Ray. I know you can't do "freebies" on unauthorized problems but that door problem might have only been two lost nuts that hold the door check mechanism to the door so, instead, the mechanism just moves inside the door as it closes (rather than allowing it to grab the shaft and hold the door open in either of its two "check" positions.) A potential simple fix that would have saved your leg from multiple impacts. Yes, not something typically done but greatly appreciated if it is fixed. Of course, if the mechanism is broken and needs replacing, a note could be included on the invoice.
Before installing the permanent splice, you should have tested it with jumper cables to verify that you got the correct wires paired. It would break your heart to mess with your lovely factory splicing to rewire it. For all we know, you had to redo it off camera after reading this post, didn't you, Ray?
@Simr Khera I couldn’t agree more. Time after time we watch Ray disassembling a lot of parts, with bolts flying all over hither and yon. But all the bolts end up going right where they came from.
Hey Ray, love the videos. Just a heads up on your stripping tool there, tighten the gold knob on the left toward the jaws to give more of a positive bite on the tougher jackets.
I would recommend sliding the clear wire connectors back twisting the wires together and creating a mechanical connection between the wires. The implementation you have is relying mostly on the heat shrink to keep the wires in place.
While in tech school, I worked for Sears Automotive. Two oil changers played chicken with customers’ cars. Both were totaled. One guy was hospitalized for a couple of days.

Ray, your annoyance at the anti-seize is justified. It may seem minor to some people, but the amount of anti-seize is important as well as the type of anti-seize. Since the two were different colors it means they are made with different metals and possibly different bases. The brown anti seize is general purpose and uses copper in a petroleum grease. The dark gray was either nickel based or more likely, since it was pre-applied, zinc dust in a petrolatum compound. The zinc and petrolatum is ideal for mating steel threads to aluminum castings and provides better corrosion resistance with dissimilar metals.
All two door G's have heavy doors that are designed to "self close" with minimum effort. The down side is they don't usually stay open unless you open them very wide. They all do that from day one in the stealership so that is just normal. Not sure why the customer insists on changing all O2 sensors... Just needs a fuse and that one O2 connector replaced. I hope the shop advised the customer it is not needed and would be better off spending the money on new tpms sensors and a new shift knob.
When you get an item that is rusty and crusty, we up north, use " pb blaster" penetrating spray. It dissolves the rust emediately, to where you can almost wipe the rust off with a rag.
I owned a 2003 G35, reminds me of back in the day when I would work on mine lol. The AC got stuck on full blast and all the lights on the Center console went out and radio would not function. With it being an older car and out of warranty…bringing it to the dealer would have cost $ 1200 for a brand new bose audio receiver with installation. So I went online and just ordered the head unit, I had to take apart almost the entire dashboard just to get the head unit out and install the new one/remanufactured one. Cost $275 and took me 3 hours to install it myself. Everything worked as good as new once completed. It was a great car but once the upper and lower Control arms on both sides needed to be replaced along with the ball joints, I finally traded it in for a 2013 G37, good cars but once they get up high in mileage, things need to be replaced and can get very costly. Another great video Ray. It’s great to finally see you work on one of the cars I’ve owned, can’t wait until you work on a 2018 and up Honda Accord Sport 2.0T
First, when you had both hands and arms reaching up to reinstall that O2 sensor, it looked like a scene from a horror movie. “Auto Mechanic Devoured By Evil Infinity”. Also most guys would push the wires into the solder connector, hoping that they would overlap to some degree. In typical “Ray Fashion” you pushed the first wire all the way through, overlapped the wires completely, and then pulled both exposed wires into the center to insure maximum solder coverage on the connection. Well done!
1 wire at a time is the way to go...I've replaced so many connectors. Most are only a few wires, some are larger however the worst one I've done was 120 wires, solder connected in a very small place. Took the entire 8 hr day but no more autopilot complants. Feels good when a job is done right
Some O2 sensors use the wires for the fresh air reference. It will be interesting to see if this splice works long term if that sensor was one of those types. Hopefully enough to get to the end of the vehicle life.

As a GM tech he should be using TLC/GDS2, unless he's working on all makes/models

New sensors are usually bagged inside the box. So if the bag was missing or opened then you could safely say something like that must have happened.
The copper kind is designed for very high temperatures. The grey kind that was on there was not. I think you are absolutely right.

zip ties and heat shrink tubing are ALWAYS life savers when it comes to mechanic work!
I'm always amazed as to how auto makers design their vehicles as if they never need repair. Especially when it comes to wearing parts such as sensors.
I only use the o2 socket when putting in a new one otherwise I cut the wires off and use a regular socket

your stripper is the correct kind....my favorite. there is a tension adjustment for the grab side you can use to make it grab the strip off side stronger.

I have been afflicted as well. Dropped a riser at work the other day and said "Gravity". It is contagious.

I learned from a master mechanic (summer job in college) when wrapping black tape to do a slight stretch on the tape after each wrap. Trust me after fixing/rewiring lights on 30 semi trailers, he was right, if you stretch it after each wrap, it will stay on tighter long term.
Performed on a level that would make a seasoned thoracic surgeon envious. Fantastic job!

Hey Ray, Thanks for all your videos and something to laugh with you too! for the repair though (solder connections) use crimp and seal butt connectors. The sensor side wire is actually stainless steel stranded and solder doesn't stick to stainless steel. Otherwise very meticulous work!
i worked in the oil field the best anti seize is a joint compound called best o life 2000 its copper based high temp i used it on all my threads on my truck even after 5 years any nut or bolt with the compound on it comes right off with no effort best stuff ever works great on exhaust bolts, wampum is even better lead based awesome stuff

Ray, you could see if you could get your hands on a small high frequency or induction shrink tool... they're perfect and very quick with heat shrink material, takes only seconds and no risk of melting stuff around it. I don't know exactly what they are called, but I've worked at a confectionery during high school and there they used them to heat seal wrappers around the sticks for lollipops. It looks like a soldering iron but with a hook made out of a coil on the end.
In my 40 years going to shops...not one mechanic ever showed me stuff like that......good work!!!

It's actually more of the plasticky bits that fall off, but at 30 years old that's par for the course with most vehicles of that era.
As a DIY tinkerer, i would have just put some heatshrink over the 4 connectors so they couldn't short and be done with it. And then promptly forget what wire goes where and take hours figuring that out
The owner most likely had you replace them all because he knew you would be able to fix the wiring issue and if any of the other ones broke that you would have to know how to replace them better than whoever did before whether it be the owner or another shop as always you did a wonderful job I love to hear your rambling on different issues keep up the great work as always I wish I had a mechanic as trustworthy and honest as you are you do the mechanics of the world a great deed showing that there are people in the world that you can trust thank you

Yes, he is near Sarasota Florida. I am in Michigan and we don't see many 100,000+ miles on them as they are rusted out. I used to be a lead diagnostician at the Chrysler headquarters and boy, were diagnostics were a PITA before we had scan tools! Like 1985 to 1990! Diagnostics is an art and Ray does a great job.
Ray, what would we all do without your daily updates. I have a suggestion and one you may already know, amalgam tape. Like a fabric but thicker and can be squished to make a waterproof seal. Used for development testing on articulated dump trucks in harsh environments to protect connectors. Amazing stuff. Anyway, keyboard warrior feedback completed, switching off ...peyeeew.
That "junk" wire is actually high temperature teflon insulated, and used extensively on aircraft and automotive applications such as O2 sensors. Great video.
These wire connector shrink tubes are excellent, use them all the time.
Just a friendly tip, using a small torch lighter works much better and faster on those solder shrink connectors.
... and it also looks way crappier... I personally hate ppl using flame on heat shrinks (i even hate myself when i'm forced to do so when out in the field withoit my gas soldering iron - since the exhaust hole can be used lil field heat torch)

Nice splice and tape job there Ray, I would recommend getting some Scotch 130C Liner less Splice tape that's self volcanizing and overwrap that with some Scotch 33+ or 88

That fancy little hose remover, I also have in my tool box. I bought it, along with some other tools for the same purpose of removing the plastic snaps that are used throughout cars to hold body parts on. That and an assortment of the plastic fasteners to replace those that get broken.
I really like that tool for poppenz out, the little plastic fasteners, but never until now, thought to use it as a hose remover. I shall try that one day when the opportunity affords itself.
I am guessing that the local scrap yards didn't have an infinity in them for you to snag a connector off. But hey if it works that's all that matters.

Those soldered joints are really great with the clear heat shrink and they are waterproof, I use them for the 12V lights in my pond.

With the mileage on that car I'm actually OK with replacing all four sensors. Yes, it's a bit pricey but after about 150K they're all worn out anyway. The car will run better...have seen it many times. Also, don't be fooled, on A/F ratio sensor cars the downstream sensors do actually contribute, somewhat, to fuel control in addition to monitoring the cats.
That's preventive maintenance. Would have done the same.
All that rusted stuff with holes in it, too.
Nice diagnosis and repair, Ray. I know you can't do "freebies" on unauthorized problems but that door problem might have only been two lost nuts that hold the door check mechanism to the door so, instead, the mechanism just moves inside the door as it closes (rather than allowing it to grab the shaft and hold the door open in either of its two "check" positions.) A potential simple fix that would have saved your leg from multiple impacts. Yes, not something typically done but greatly appreciated if it is fixed. Of course, if the mechanism is broken and needs replacing, a note could be included on the invoice.
Try marine heat shrink, it has a sealant that melts when you shrink it. Nice repair.
Before installing the permanent splice, you should have tested it with jumper cables to verify that you got the correct wires paired. It would break your heart to mess with your lovely factory splicing to rewire it.
For all we know, you had to redo it off camera after reading this post, didn't you, Ray?
@Simr Khera I couldn’t agree more. Time after time we watch Ray disassembling a lot of parts, with bolts flying all over hither and yon. But all the bolts end up going right where they came from.
Hey Ray, love the videos. Just a heads up on your stripping tool there, tighten the gold knob on the left toward the jaws to give more of a positive bite on the tougher jackets.

I would recommend sliding the clear wire connectors back twisting the wires together and creating a mechanical connection between the wires. The implementation you have is relying mostly on the heat shrink to keep the wires in place.

While in tech school, I worked for Sears Automotive. Two oil changers played chicken with customers’ cars. Both were totaled. One guy was hospitalized for a couple of days.

For that connector replacement I would have used a Deutsch DT series 4 pin connector. They have excellent weather seal and would look almost OE
Absolutely they are great connectors and only about $16-$19 you get everything you need 👍🏻

Ray, your annoyance at the anti-seize is justified. It may seem minor to some people, but the amount of anti-seize is important as well as the type of anti-seize. Since the two were different colors it means they are made with different metals and possibly different bases. The brown anti seize is general purpose and uses copper in a petroleum grease. The dark gray was either nickel based or more likely, since it was pre-applied, zinc dust in a petrolatum compound. The zinc and petrolatum is ideal for mating steel threads to aluminum castings and provides better corrosion resistance with dissimilar metals.
Being an electrician I always say "it's either a fuse or something else" In this case it was both! Nice!
All two door G's have heavy doors that are designed to "self close" with minimum effort. The down side is they don't usually stay open unless you open them very wide. They all do that from day one in the stealership so that is just normal. Not sure why the customer insists on changing all O2 sensors... Just needs a fuse and that one O2 connector replaced. I hope the shop advised the customer it is not needed and would be better off spending the money on new tpms sensors and a new shift knob.
When you get an item that is rusty and crusty, we up north, use " pb blaster" penetrating spray. It dissolves the rust emediately, to where you can almost wipe the rust off with a rag.

I owned a 2003 G35, reminds me of back in the day when I would work on mine lol. The AC got stuck on full blast and all the lights on the Center console went out and radio would not function. With it being an older car and out of warranty…bringing it to the dealer would have cost $ 1200 for a brand new bose audio receiver with installation. So I went online and just ordered the head unit, I had to take apart almost the entire dashboard just to get the head unit out and install the new one/remanufactured one. Cost $275 and took me 3 hours to install it myself. Everything worked as good as new once completed. It was a great car but once the upper and lower Control arms on both sides needed to be replaced along with the ball joints, I finally traded it in for a 2013 G37, good cars but once they get up high in mileage, things need to be replaced and can get very costly. Another great video Ray. It’s great to finally see you work on one of the cars I’ve owned, can’t wait until you work on a 2018 and up Honda Accord Sport 2.0T
First, when you had both hands and arms reaching up to reinstall that O2 sensor, it looked like a scene from a horror movie. “Auto Mechanic Devoured By Evil Infinity”. Also most guys would push the wires into the solder connector, hoping that they would overlap to some degree. In typical “Ray Fashion” you pushed the first wire all the way through, overlapped the wires completely, and then pulled both exposed wires into the center to insure maximum solder coverage on the connection. Well done!
Don't know why I watch you. Not really into auto shows on TV but I enjoy this. Maybe cause you're fixing things vs. trying to make It "better".

1 wire at a time is the way to go...I've replaced so many connectors. Most are only a few wires, some are larger however the worst one I've done was 120 wires, solder connected in a very small place. Took the entire 8 hr day but no more autopilot complants. Feels good when a job is done right
Some O2 sensors use the wires for the fresh air reference. It will be interesting to see if this splice works long term if that sensor was one of those types. Hopefully enough to get to the end of the vehicle life.
Ray you need to get your hands on a box of deutsch connectors! Would of been perfect for this situation! Nice and neat job with what you had on hand but, great job!
