- This episode is inspired by the new Wim Wenders film; Perfect Days. It is a celebration of the joys of music and the minutiae of Japanese culture. The protagonist Hirayama (played by Koji Yakusho, winner of the Best Actor award at Cannes 2023) is a contemplative middle-aged man who lives a life of modesty and serenity, spending his days balancing his job as a caretaker of Tokyo’s public toilets with his passion for music, literature and photography.
In collaboration with Zag's favourite streaming service, MUBI, he picked some Japanese acid folk, blues, rock, and jazz records and created his imaginary version of the soundtrack!

I must watch Perfect Days now
I am a Japanese male who has been Londoner for long. Somehow I have avoided to go to see Perfect Days despite friends' good reviews. BUT after Listening to this MELLOW yet UPLIFTING mix (esp. tamaki hiroki & wada akiko's) I have decided to go to cinema on my own between my long/steady working hours life style like I assume the main character of the film. What a Wonderful Mix!!!! I can not thank DJ Zag enough for this inspiration.
I’d say inspired by is a pretty loose correlation here, the music in the film is mostly western. The film is sublime though, but more of a love letter to some of the Shinto, Buddhist and bushido traits that inform society. This mix is perhaps a more of a fan letter to that love letter. A cross to the nought.
For anyone interested, an equally sublime, but very different cinematic portrayal of life in Japan is Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Monster.
The character in the movie actually experiences his world through western music. There is one Japanese song, but otherwise, it will be songs you probably recognize (like Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison). But that shouldn't discourage you from watching the movie. I held off because it was Wim Wenders directing a Japanese film, so I thought it might be very westernized or artsy. But it was well done, and could have been mistaken for a Japanese directed film.

This is hands down the best set in the history of this channel. From the selections to the transitions, it doesn't get better than this. I was sad to hear the last song because I knew the set was coming to a close. I could listen to this for hours.

I’ve watched ‘Perfect Day’ twice and loved the vibes/messages. This is a good playlist… was hoping to hear some Lou Reed. Only thing that spoiled the listening experience were the many ads in the middle of the playlist! Can’t you just put them at the start/end?

I am a Japanese in my fifties but I knew nothing of these songs. But these are absolutely beautiful tunes! And the other hand, when younger Japanese try to listen these songs they might be required some patience as they are so busy to consume web contents.

Nice mix. I only remember hearing one Japanese song in the movie, most of the songs were western. Nothing wrong with that, clearly the lead character felt the need to escape through english music. But it was too bad more Japanese songs with the same feel didn't appear in the movie (maybe also the licensing was stricter for the Japanese songs?)
