Gerry Anderson - UFO TV Series - Gabrielle Drake
Now I'm 63 but still love this as when was (much) younger. Never forgotten music, effects, characters.
I was SO struck on Gabrielle Drake-- and loved that purple wig on her. She was absolutely gorgeous and even at 71 presently- she's STILL an extremely classy and attractive lady!!!
She was/is beautiful, but it was Dolores Mantez that did it for me.
Holy Moly! I too had a crush on Gabrielle Drake. Your mention of her nudged me to look her up on-line. And what I found made my jaw dr0p! She's Nick Drake's sister! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Drake
I know what you mean. I was smitten the first time I saw her on UFO in the 70s.
Information about her online says she's 78 now. Are you sure about her age?
NO- I'm not-- I think one video says she's 77 another says 78.. I have no idea-- still looking VERY good for her age-- regardless.. :)
As a kid I was utterly fascinated by the purple haired moon women.
ME too- I thought it looked GREAT..
Me three.
Me too.lol!
@@gregchijoff9959 We did too at first-- but got color for the RE-RUNS.. :)
Those outfits & wigs would still be popular head turners at sci-fy cosplay conventions today.
I remember watching this when I was a kid. Never understood why the ladies at moon base had purple hair. But it really didn't matter because they were all so damm hot looking. Oh to be young again. 😁
pre-Apollo 11 static electricity on the moon's surface was thought to be a problem - the purple wigs are anti-static and would keep the girl's hair from frizzing out - 🛸✨
@@FandersonUfo Yeah.. that's a scientific stretch there. :)
@@brianh9358 - that's my story and I'm sticking to it sir - best regards - 🛸✨
@@FandersonUfo I think it's important to point out that only women had the purple colored hair wigs. Not the men. Soooo this would implie that physics work differently depending on weather you are male or female. Hmm, I think not. 🤔 What the hell, everyone have a great day. 🌤
@@victorbenner539 - in 1969 when this was filmed most women tended to have longer hair than men - it was still thought to be more of a problem for female crew on the moon than men - 🛸
My Dinky toy Interceptor was green for whatever stupid reason lol. I still loved it. I grew up with Star Trek, UFO, and Space: 1999 of course.
What a cool show, I grew up watching it, Straker, Shadow, the effects, & the music, way before it's time.
🛸👽💚✨
Just LOVE the music score. I watched this series on my parent's black and white tv when I was five or six years old, could not see the purple in their hair. I remember thinking the interceptor pilots individual launching chutes was the coolest thing...
I think this was one of the best shows, sci-fi or otherwise, ever made. Only discovered it a few years ago but watched the whole series. I’ll never forget the impact of the episode where Straker has to choose the safety of the world over his own son. Heartbreaking…
🛸👽✨
I always thought that the purple hair was so totally cool.
I so wanted to be one of the Moonbase girls back in the day. Still do!
I always wanted to be stranded on that base for several years. Still do.
Although it is an SF drama about 50 years ago, it is really well done. At that time, I was still a child but I was absorbed in it. Very adults looked cool. Moreover, women were very active, they were dignified, there were also pretty, it was the subject of longing.
約50年前のSFドラマだが、実によくできている。当時は、まだ子供だったが夢中で見ていた。すごく大人たちがカッコよく見えた。また女性がすごく活躍していて凛々しく、また可愛くも有り、憧れの対象だった。
Thank you yamada koji . So sexy the purple wig.
色でそのような美しいショー。 月面前哨少女たち。
And the smokes and the booze. 7/11 style dispensers no less! 🤣
@@Chuckolicious There's no way I'd do some of those jobs sober. Get me a double scotch, or I ain't going. Oh, and a triple for when I get back.
Whenever I have a sudden and uncontrollable urge to use the loo, that jazzy launch music starts playing. True!
You'd think they've designed the interceptors with more than one weapon.
Yep they only get one shot
That’s why the Hawk Interceptors were created later.
@@CeddyFeldmann I think you're confusing with Space 1999?
I ALWAYS LOVED THE GALS ON BOTH MOONBASES TO TELL YA THE TRUTH, SHADOE. AND ALPHA!!!GARY BAILEY
I have wigs similar to these in fuschia and purple that I wear from time to time whenever I'm in the mood.
I'm sure you look marvelous in them your Highness - 🛸👽✨
@@FandersonUfo thanks bunches luv! princess is fine though, giggling!!

That first shot of the Interceptor pilots diving into the tubes is brilliant! It's used in the title sequence and is definitely the highlight. Great to see it in context, finally!
TRAC INV MUSE FOR EVER GOOD MORNING AND ME CACHO IN BERGAMO HIQUEN DI PUTESSEN
Saw it when I was a kid what a great show it was.
And also a goddess of the 70's, Wanda Ventham (Benedict Cumberbatch's mum) as Colonel Virginia Lake
As a buddy once told me, "in the future everyone will wear too much eye-makeup."
moon base baby dolls so beautiful well done wow.today they would be in latex body suits.so so man
A great period Sci-fi show. Funny that so many shows think "in the future people yell numbers back and forth to each other."
This was miles ahead of the original Lost in Space or Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, but very short of Star Trek.
in it's best moments as good as Trek imho - 🛸
We didn't have a color TV. I knew there was something odd about their hair, but I didn't find out that it was purple until I re-watched the episodes a few years ago.
I'm sorry you had to miss out on that. I just happened upon these videos and thought the hair color was pretty good. I definitely would've enjoyed it as a kid.
Those single barrel interceptors were numb. I love the sexiness of the show. The Shado girls in those tan tight outfits are killer. The one black haired lady is gorgeous.
This video is the most powerful and convincing argument I have seen yet for a substantially budgeted SpaceForce
That was funny. :o)
These videos use clips from episodes. It's very clever how they are joined together. SID was voiced by Mel Oxley. He was a BBC Announcer and he was chosen for the role because of his clarity of speech.
I always thought it so strange that the computer clearly pronounced the letters U. F. O. but everyone else said "You-foe".
@@UnclePengy Have you tested earlier (say 90s) text to speech systems? Some words were always mangled.
Loved this when I was a kid.
The weapon used to hit the UFOs is larger than the Tzar Bomb, but the explosion has the power of a Javelin 🤣
At the time in Italy broadcasts were in black and white. I was surprised to find out about their purple wigs only when I made the album of stickers. I was and still am in love with all of them, incredibly sexy with the absolutely gorgeous Drake. Great TV series that made the kids of an entire generation dream. I own the entire series and movies on DVD, still have the Dinky Toys interceptor and Shadomobile from then on in mint condition. on the screen of my bike there is the SHADO sticker and when I hear the acronym I return to a boy overwhelmed by nostalgia.
Loved UFO. Have all the episodes on DVD
Two things:
1. Love those purple wigs.
2. Straker better get the Interceptor crews back out on the test firing range. The miss/hit rate is UNACCEPTABLE.
The ufo's were even poorer shots, like imperial storm troopers.
And who would design interceptors with only one shot?
@@frankpatz8708 Toy manufacturers ;D
@@frankpatz8708 The interceptors were incredibly slow (relative to their targets) missile platforms. Nukes (I believe those missiles were) aren't cheap, either. It's a wonder they scored ANY hits! =^[.]^=

Purple eye lashes to match thier wigs
I read the novelisations of the series "UFO" and"UFO 2". published by Pan books in the UK. According to them the wigs were nti-static wigs designed to protect the electronics from static charges in the ladies long hair. I believe Sylvia Anderson wanted them just because they looked good.
perhaps the most unfortunate choice in production design for UFO - even if they look amazing they are difficult to understand or accept by first time viewers these days - 🛸✨
@@FandersonUfo that is just because they don’t know what it was like back in 1980
@@kchuk1965 - white wigs or even moon cheese green would be easier for today's audience to deal with I guess - ironically I see natural hair dyed purple several times a year these days - 🛸
@@FandersonUfo Or a bright Blue in the same Hue.
love that blue eye shadow on them!
Was a good show watched every episode back in the day.
I’m 59 and I still love purple hair.
58 and on your side.
😎
British tv in the late 60s really understood how to film women.
Currently playing XCom so this is nostalgia for a show I never saw.
I remember this thing. I liked it.
Cool, thanks for the video
10:56 Certainly it was a lieutenant Elise, Gabrielle Drake. Really purple wigs are lovely, silver mini skirts also fit well.
確かエリス中尉とかいう役柄だったでしょうか、ガブリエル・ドレイクさん。本当に紫色のかつらが可愛らしく、銀色のミニスカートもお似合いでした。

Thank you very much. You are welcome.
カナダからありがとう。
When they were staffing the moon base they made the rule "If you are female you will be required to wear a purple wig everyday because.... uh.. you will look sexy."
1 1/2 million miles per second = 7 times the speed of light, which means the ships arrive before they departed.
The thing I never got about this is that they only wore the purple wigs when they were on Moon Base. I don't think they ever explained why. When Lt. Ellis is summoned to SHADO headquarters on Earth, she's just got her natural burnet hair.
Was part of the uniform while on the moon. Sylvia talks about it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/qxh-AZm_1RI/v-deo.html
Ah, we can cobble up a bogus reason for the whigs.
There might be issues with shielding from radiation on the surface of the moon
.
No miles of air above their heads to filter out radiation.
So maybe the whigs were infused with some space age material, pardon the pun, to filter out radiation while on the moon.
If you imagine people turning their heads it should provide partial coverage.
Used to love this show.
The female crew members on Moonbase could pass through the doorways more easily if they wore flats instead of high-heeled boots. I’m glad they wore the boots.
The “ wigs” were considered part of their uniform. On earth they didn’t wear them.
Did the show ever explain WHY female moon personnel wore purple wigs but male personnel did not?
Supposedly Anita static
That and apparently the eye makeup is also part of the uniform.
Have to cut hair short for pressure helmet. Then just to feel exotic? And drive pilots wild?
@@mikesweeney5244 But the male personnel did not cut their hair short. Sylvia Anderson had revealed, in an old interview, that it was done to add visual interest and to avoid the time/effort to have the actresses hair done every shooting day.
1,500,000 miles per second? They can track them moving at 8 times the speed of light?
If I woul be the aliens, I would come along with 4 UFOs, because there are only 3 interceptors with one rocket each.
I'm wondering why they didn't just simply come from the opposite direction, therefore moonbase not come into play.
@aDBo'Ch 1 LOL!
oh my, u did it. dreams come true c:
Suggest you visit the channel page and browse when you get a chance sir
The UFO is travelling at 8 times the speed of light!!
The music is so groovy! (●´◡`●)🎵
And did "Moonbase: tell your ground defenses to get nervous!" ever become a UK catch phrase like FAB did?
Also i love the idea of a smartphone also being a mirror and makeup kit. Why were these never invented?
Yeah baby Yeahhhhhhhh,,,,, grooovvvvvyyyyyy,
We kind of got there. Especially with the flip phones.
To our eyes it looks like a smartphone but then later on they use phones with corded handsets.
Hardly futuristic.😆😅
Dont know anything about moon or wigs, ¡¡but music its toooo cool!!
Barry Gray composed the musical soundtrack.
¡Thanks!
This is super duper cool

If they use the purple wings on space 1999 it would still be running
They tried to save Space:1999 with the gorgeous Katherine Schell. I don't think even purple wigs for Katherine would have saved that series. Pathetic scripts and input from Fred Freiberger the guy who killed Star Trek would have doomed Space:1999 no matter what the girls wore on their heads. I do appreciate the compliment to my girl friends on moon base though.
@@FandersonUfo AAAH come on, give up one of those girlfriends😉
I will give you one but it would depend on who you want. I will never part with Lt Ellis or Nina Barry. I guess that leaves you with Lt Joan Harrington even though she would be tough for me to part with as well.

"speed 1 1/2 million miles per second" .... well they certainly didn't do the research on that figure .
Close calls, head me on edge, amazing technology 😃
Refresh my memory. Wasn't there a archive for Shado and Moon Base tech? I'm curious about maintaining the interceptors.
www.shadolibrary.org/
I expect it's archive will not be complete enough for detailed technical questions though - I rarely use it but for minor performers names etc - the best source for that kind of detail is to me only a rare and out print UFO technical reference - if you could find it anywhere it might be very expensive - wish I could be more helpful directly - I would kill many to own that particular book sir - Best regards FandersonUfo

They wore the purple wigs on the moon, but when back on Earth had their normal hair color.
UFO was like Austin Powers but in Space.
The "science" behind it according to the book "Flesh Hunters" mentioned that they were covered with a purple gel to eliminate static electricity from destroying the computers.
God bless you Doc - correct - 🛸👽💜✨
As a child, we used love to watch this show. No matter how bad it actually was.
This is very much, to me at least, inspired by The Battle of Britain. Women in fighter command tracking bases and the men going out to intercept the enemy in their fighters.
It was a lot of fun to watch.. I thought the purple hair was corney.. However now i think they are genious.. Will require them ond my moon base..
well the got the prediction about crazy hair colour on crazy women right!
wonder if the drapes match the carpet
When I was a kid watching this show our TV was not a color set, I had no idea the wigs were purple, I always thought them to be silver. If I had never seen this on utube I would have never known.
loved this series...
0:12 I thought for sure that was a smart phone in her hand.
Good ... i remember
The concept around the interceptors seemed to change. At the beginning, they were more like space borne missile launchers, shooting long distances on computer calculations without visual sightings. In the second half of the season, they became more like fighter jets, doing more precision shooting (and cutting things much closer).
interceptors had cannon for close in dog fights but are never shown in use in the series - I would guess as the season progressed the special effects team learned how to do more with the models and the battle scenes got more intricate - 🛸✨
Moon girl is black, space pilot is black...who said we were racist in the 70's ?
When I watched this it was on a B&W TV so I had no idea their hair was purple. 😁
The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second (roughly). The speed of the incoming UFO (at 2.04) is 1,500,000 miles per second. Hmmm!
It has a down-market Bender Coil? Of course, were it engaged, it would be *in the Void,* which is where f.t.l. travel happens…
What's your point, that they can't travel that fast?
この場面にサンダーバードのマーチを流しましょう、と提案して通した日本版制作陣のスタッフは誰だったのでしょう? 天才的です
Even in the future we're still bogged down in bureaucracy...
"One and a half million miles per second?" Uh...I don't think so.
If star trek can go faster than light then so can an advanced alien space craft in this series. It's sci-fi not sci-fact.
I watched this as a 13 yo. I assure you that watching the moon d0lls had me at least twice that speed.
@@gilbertosughrue3766
Shhhhh. He thinks it's real.
I never understood why they fit a few more missles on the undercarriages of the interceptors. They miss a lot.
Them curly handset wires though ...
I don't remember this show. I might have been in Viet Nam at that time. I'm surprised that the credits didn't mention that UFO was an Ed Wood production. Reading the captions was a real treat, but the actors did speak British English. My daughter wears her purple wig too.
Weird I never watched this show before, how could I miss it.
Its was and is excellent..try to pick up episodes ..they are streamed...

@@my3dviews Yes I have the completed box set 🙂
@@alanhutchins5916 Nice. :-)
My family only had a black and white TV, so I thought that they were silver
In the book version of the first few episodes, the wigs were called "anti-static" which makes sense as the static discharge is a big problem with computer circuitry.
Of course, why the men did not have to wear some sort of static discharge device is probably just 1960s sexism. Their static discharge would have hurt the computer as well you know. 😁😁😁👍👍😎
the wigs were to keep longer female hair from frizzing out in that static charged environment - 🛸👽✨
SLS said:I am coming...
If I did the math right, one and a half million miles per second is just over 8x faster than the speed of light. So much for the speed of light limit.
They predicted trajectory for something farther away than the sun and moving faster than the speed of light... With one shot each...
they'd best predict carefully then - 🛸✨
The UFOs have always struck me as being very inconsiderate. Hey, it's those Dam Aliens again! Very Rude!
It all seems silly now but I grew up in Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's world. It started with Supercar and went on through all the puppet shows then onto the live action stuff. The puppets I loved but it paled as time went by. The live stuff was ludicrous.
For me it is just the nostalgia.
It seems crazy that the fate of the entire planet rest on a force that even if everything went absolutely perfect could only stop 3 UFOs. Oh yeah, they had one mobile SAM launcher, but that got taken out by a single UFO.
That what you get with government cutbacks.
Star Trek Ah-Go-Go?
One theory is that the women came up with the idea so they wouldn't waste time on their hair.
All the aliens have to do is attack with 4 or more saucers, and SHADOW would be screwed. lol
entertainment is an exercise of the mind ..
