I love the NES. Last night I was playing Ninja Gaiden 2, Devil World (FC) and Defender 2. All original carts, but using a Retron 5. It just makes more sense for me to use the Retron in my gaming set up.
Not really. If you want to collect for your region (US and Europe), is almost impossible these days, even ultra common games like SMB1 can be sold for way too much just because it's a popular game; you would have to be happy with getting the games nobody wants... if you're lucky to find them at reasonable prices for their quality. You are better off collecting Famicom games, even getting an AV Famicom can be cheaper in many places. Also, It's not true the pins bend. The cartridge slot was designed to make a good connection between the cart and pins with close to zero damage to both. The pressure exerted by the slot is minimal to bend the pins but steady enough to keep them connected. The problem is that it is a dust collecting pit due to being so close to the vents and so far from reach. Doing what everyone recommends, including you, to "rebend" the pins to a "better" state, will actually start damaging both carts and the slot as they could become so tight that the pins will scratch the cart connector and the pins might get pull out and damaged beyond repair. In summary, you are better off with re-releases unless you already had all this stuff from back in the day (even if you do, like I do, you're still better off with emulation).

The NES European Version is PAL-B region format. The NES Mattel/NES Version is PAL-A. The two are incompatible with each other.
