As to rototilling in the snow, I remember in the book Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder that when it snowed they went and tilled the snow into the ground. They called it poor mans fertilizer so maybe those peonys will do extra well because of it. One can only hope anyways. :)
I've spent my weekend watching the old videos (5 to 4 years ago) AN WOW!!! it's been AMAZING from Urban homestead to Farm.. I had forgotten so much(I been with you 4years) every scriber needs to take a walk down memory lane...🎉🎉👏👏👏🎊🎊
You two are teaching your children some very important lessons about character and work ethic so while it may be difficult it is extremely valuable. God bless you both.
Thank you for sharing your lives and work with us! You work so hard and are dedicated to making it work. May God multiply your effort and prosper you for your faithfulness🌺
Oh my gosh you guys, I was doing the same thing! winter hit so early and just never let up this year. I could so relate and felt for ya 🙂 but I only had 150 peonies to put in the ground so wasn't as bad. your peony patch will look so beautiful this spring! I 'm glad to see you invested in peonies, later down the road when your my age ;-) your going to be so grateful you invested in perennials! Take care.
We are planning for more peonies now (they are a bit addicting, lol). But I think we will have learned our lesson and are going to at least get the land prepped and the landscape fabric down, so we only need to dig the holes. And cross our fingers for more normal weather for next year.
@@YouCantEatTheGrass Yay!!! The more the merrier 😁 me too, I have about a total of 600 right now, but I would love to double that over the next three 👍 it’s my retirement supplement/mad money. 👍 keep up the good work love watching your progress…and your family is in my prayers.
You guys are tough stuff. Enjoyed hearing Ian's tale of working for the forestry dept. Puts it in perspective. Seeing you both labor under such tough conditions makes me realize I have no excuse for not getting out there when it's in the mere 30s and 40s F to get some relatively light winter work like cutting back and raking done.
I wasn't going to leave a comment but I work with farmers. What I have learned from them there is no time to relax and enjoy anything until the work is done.
This was very stressful to watch with my morning coffee hahahah. I'm glad you got it all done!!! now we can all look forward to seeing sprouts in spring.
I spent a few hundred on bulbs this year but had COVID when they should have been going in the ground. So salvaged all my large pots and now I have a garage filled with pots of tulips, daffodils, iris, and various others including my garlic. I can't wait to see what happens this spring! (the garlic is already up) 😄
I built a raised bed out of untreated 10x12's. I do not take up the bed for winter, as a matter of fact part of it is buried bc the land is not completely flat. That bed is 4 years old and is still very strong.
Holy moly, Ian and Serina, you did an amazing job in such extremes. The whole video had me on anxious tenterhooks, will they or won’t they be able to finish, such jeopardy, like watching a two hour action movie with tightrope walking heroes trying to escape over a rivene, with zombie hoards chasing you!! So pleased you mustered your cold weather working forestry superpowers and Canadian grit to get those peonies and bulbs into the ground in tough circumstances. Capes now thawed out at BC Comics. 😅🎉
I had similar experience this year! Winter came unexpectedly early, I couldn't even believe it. And it came and settled, the snow didn't melt for 1,5 months. Eventually I planted some of the tulips in crates, some in large pots, some I lost, but now it all seems an interesting experience. I'm looking forward to spring and to see how it all will go. You two are such an inspiration! I really enjoyed the video and so glad you managed to plant it.
I love you guys!!! I've watched all the recent episodes "RIGHT"..... I have a florist in Taylor's South Carolina USA. If I could I would buy all your beautiful flowers!!! I know its impossible... But I can dream!!! Btw I'm addicted to plants as well!!! Just LOVE ya'll!!!
That was incredible to watch! Serina and Ian, your work ethic is on the highest level. I can’t wait to see the fruits of your labor! Congratulations on getting your goals accomplished, even if far later than you had hoped.
Ian and Serina, you are going to laugh, I am freezing. I live in Texas and our temperature today is 42 degrees. Yesterday it was 77 degrees the day before it was 81 degrees.
I stumbled onto your videos a couple of days ago. I'm starting my journey this summer in what we are calling Project Flower Field. Out of all of the flower farm channels you guys have the best content! Thank you so much! running a farm is such hard work. And there is NEVER enough time in the day! I hope that this summer is good to you guys and me as well!
I ❣️ your optimism! Get er done! I been there done that on a much much smaller scale, and it's a cold, miserable task. I'm glad you stuck with it! You both are amazing people! 👏 💯❣️
Wow you 2 had me on the edge of my seat until the end. I applaud your determination and preserverance. I know you fought hard to get it all planted but come spring you will have beautiful blooms. Fantastic job 👏
I’m USA zone 7 (NJ) YOU GUYS ARE A INSPIRATION to me…a residential gardener. I never was interested in Peonies. I thought they attract ants. But watching your hard efforts to plant them… I will do some research & plant a couple…lol. Thank you so very much for sharing!!!
Loving all your videos and can't wait to see it come alive in spring. We are under snow here in Ontario too. It's -7C here and getting colder. P.S I'm watching all your ads now.
My heart was breaking watching this video--all the work that needs to be done in freezing weather plus the sad news of Ian’s dad. Lots of love, hope and prayers to you all! I soothed my heart by immediately signing up as a Soul Mate member. Looking forward to seeing you have a fabulous growing year for 2023!
U guys rock! My husband and I get into work projects and always seem to outwork our teenagers. Our kids are soft. I can relate to working into the night, in the cold, in the rain…keeping going because the job needs done. Make sure u guys take some needed physical and mental breaks.
To be honest with you ...have ordered extra tulips ( final stock sale ) and I have to plant them also. But will do these days .... here its not that cold. Last year I also bought left overs and planted them also in february ...they flowered a bit later ...
I was looking forward to this video, and it did not disappoint!!! You guys are so funny and hardworking!!! …and I loved seeing Serina and her flamethrower!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
So admire what you did. Some would have just called it quit after the snow. Love you guys! Mother nature is going to do what she wants to do, you just have to dance around her.
Lol hey the important part is that you got it done!! I still have about 100 daffodils to get in the ground. 😅 Thanks for the inspiration! Love my torch!!
Just when I was wondering if you ever use fire to thaw the ground, Serena whips out a torch lol. Thanks for another great episode of You Can’t Eat The Grass!
Peonies are one of my favorites I look forward to blooming in the Spring. I have had a seedling come up from fallen seed. And they are easy to propagate. Once planted, they don't like being disturbed. This was entertaining. Thanks Ian & Serina. I hope all survives for you. Bulbs need about 13 weeks of cold in order to bloom.
The only good thing about how cold and miserable it was when we couldn't plant, is that it meant the tulips were still getting their chill hours in our garage
By the way, -40 is exactly the same in °F. and °C. It's the only time the two different temperatures are the same. Regardless, it's frigid. Snow actually becomes an insulation factor for plants over the winter. Hard going you two, but it's perseverance that will pay off later. 👍🇨🇦 Cold snap again but short lived so right now I'm starting to seed up cool weather plants, cabbage, onions. We were actually luck the snow didn't melt until it did - its what kept the soil able to unfreeze so quickly. It's amazing how much warmer the snow keeps the plants
Oh you two are making me laugh this morning. You look great with that torch but I know it made the project another day longer. And yes a year ago I was out there digging with a shovel in the snow.

I am sitting here in my house in Tennessee, drinking my tea and looking outside at everything currently covered with 1/8 inch of solid ice from an ice storm and wishing we got nice fluffy snow instead of sheets of ice. I know the snow is a pain too, but at least it’s pretty? We’re still brown, just brown under glass.
I think you guys are courageous, hard working and good luck, think about hot chocolate… people will get the idea that this is a Canadian pastime lol ….burning things chuckles .

You might consider one of those battery powered drill/augers. Think that would have been able to dig & widen the peony holes after she burned the holes. Post hole digging is tough work. You're dealing with mental & physical stressors. Take care.
We would have needed a post hole digger for the size of the peony holes needed, but then it would have made a mess of the fabric. Luckily Ian really likes digging holes - it would have taken me a week to dig all those holes, and he happily did it in 2 hours
definitely smart work to do what you can in the cold months that will alleviate some of the work during the spring crazy times, if you can - but man I don't envy you trying to till/dig through that snow!

Not ridiculous Ian. What you're doing is the difference between a biz owner and a hobby gardener!!! Hats off to you guys. Great work ethic ❤️👌

It would have been much more pleasant to have planted the bulbs in the summer sun, lol. Oh well, there's always next year.
I am going to have to re watch this video when it is 100 degrees outside because right now its making things worse lol
