Jeep Cherokee 2020 review: Trailhawk

  • So, you’ve seen the mainstream mid-size SUV players, and you’re looking for something… a little different.
    Maybe you’re even looking for something with some off-road ability, and that’s maybe caused you to steer away from segment heavyweights like the Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4, or Mazda CX-5.
    Am I right so far? Maybe you’re just curious to find out what one of Jeep’s main models offers in 2020. Either way, I spent a week in this top-spec Trailhawk to find out if it’s the semi-off-roader it looks to be, or if it stands a chance against the mainstream players.
    We'll look at the Cherokee's relative value, comprehensively cover off what features come in the box, and utilize its multimedia functions, as well as consider how it compares to mainstream rivals like the Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, and Toyota RAV4.
    The Trailhawk is one of the few non-ladder-chassis based SUVs to come with a low-range transfer case and rear-locking differential, to add to its off-road credentials alongside an off-road suited suspension tune, sensible 17-inch alloy wheels, all-wheel drive, and recovery hooks.
    We'll also look at the Cherokee's boot, including its features, capacity, and spare wheel.
    Finally, the Cherokee will be analysed for its drive qualities, including handling, engine response and suspension feel. Its warranty, cost of ownership and active safety features will also be considered.

    I’ll be surprised if 10% of the people who commented actually have had a somewhat new Jeep before or even know someone who’s got one.
    In the last 10 years or so Jeep has improved a lot ... same thing with Hyundai 20 years ago they were crap, now they are just fine.
    In the USA and Canada you see them literally everywhere, specially outside NYC/LAX where everyone mostly drives small cars.
    They can’t be that bad.I looked at the Outback, RAV4, CX5 ... they all paled in comparison, both in performance, features,etc.
    I bought one 18months ago in despite mixed opinion from friends prior to me buying it, so far not a glitch ... it’s just superb, 5 years warranty, unlimited KMs.
    All friends who’ve been in it are impressed. So far so good, crossing fingers it stays that way.

    I bought a brand new Cherokee TH last year. I would have loved to replace my 2013 Grand Cherokee 3.6 V6 2WD with a new 4WD model (I live on a mountaintop now) but for a lot less $$$ I got this beautiful and rugged Jeep. Does it have some quirks? Absolutely....like everything else I've ever owned. I feel totally at home in this vehicle. It's built for rough roads and deep snow.

    My Cherokee is 3 yrs old and has nothing go wrong while I've owned it. Fuel use is 9.5 l/100ks. I service it at a local mechanic who takes care of as per the service schedule at nearly half the price of the dealer.

    I am into bushwalking and car camping. Sometimes we have to drive along very poor dirt roads to get to the start. And to drive off road in the bush to get tom a good campsite. For 15 years and 250,000k I had a 2004 Ford Escape (made in Japan by Mazda). Eventually it wore out.
    There is no other car out there like my Ford Escape! Nothing to match it! I was in Canada and discovered the Jeep Cherokee - Trailhawk! I am aware of the poor after sales service of Jeep Australia so i did more research than otherwise. In the end I got a 2 door JL Wrangler! Its fantastic! I love my Jeep!
    My wife has said firmly that the next car must have 4 doors. So, in 5 years I will be looking at a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk (or the equivalent).

    I wonder if anyone testing the Trailhawk actually bothered to look underneath it to see the size and scope of the Cherokee Trailhawk's steel skid plates? Here's a look at some of what makes it much heavier than a RAV4 Edge, Mazda CX-5 or Subaru Forrester and why it needs more power than those other vehicles.

I have lost count of the amount of people I know that wanted to buy a RAV4 in the past 6 years but opted out because Toyota removed the V6 option not to mention only offer a CVT transmission.

    The big downsides of this vehicle are its infamous poor reliability in 2015-2017 years (especially the auto transmission) and the relatively small boot. The V6 is thirsty, but VERY smooth, strong and reliable. No direct injection, no turbo, no fancy stuff to break. There is a turbo 4 in North America available with even more power, but FCA turbo 4s are as reliable as their Diesels, which is to say they’re not... at all.
    This Jeep is heavy, but quiet, comfortable and very capable off-road.
    Also, that infotainment screen is 8.4 inches, not 8.

    • @paulj9821
      @paulj9821 4 роки тому

      @@afcgeo882 the quality issues were resolved in late 2016. Don't try and act like you are knowledgable about the ZF-9 when you are going off old and not accurate information. What the ZF-9 was notorious for was the 5th and 7th dogteeth scyco gears which relies on a very sophisticated AI algorithm to pre-spin them in order to downshift on demand. There can be a 1.5-2 sec delay. Again this isn't much if an issue since 2016 models from FCA. Honda, land rover etc... never really refined there ZF-9 versions like FCA did.

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 4 роки тому +2

      Paul J Nice try, but the ZF-9 transmission issues lead to total failures, not just delays in shifting, and FCA took three years of constant reprogramming to try to fix it. They eventually did, but the Cherokees from 2015 to early 2017 were, IN FACT, affected. Data on that is not “old” it is accurate.
      As for Honda and LR not refining their ZF-9s.... their ZF-9s didn’t exhibit the issues that FCA cars did. Screwing things up is not refining, no matter how much you try to spin it.
