- Trying out a new position for the camera to record from. Turned out to be too much wind swinging around to get a tail up run in. Need to make a vibration absorbing mount next.

happy father's day Don. great looking plane still. i can't wait for ya to take her up.
Thanks
Progress has its own pace. Gettin’ closer all the time!
One day at a time.
Thanks for the ride!! That's looks like a great spot for the camera. You can do all kinds of angles. Waiting for more when you get around to it. Thanks :)
Thanks
Starting to run out of ground testing, tail up is next test, then flight testing, your so close now. Awesome video, thank you for sharing this all with us.
Happy Father's Day to you Don. Thank you for all the effort of making these videos. Great view! 👍
Thanks
Looking good Don!!
Down here in Sharon. We are dealing with some warm weather and storms . If you are not shore where Sharon is . We are west of Mercer. At the state line . Youngstown is a Balls throw from me . Can not wait to see your work of art . Leave the ground. Great job !
Yes I know where you are located. I've flown into New Castle before. That closer to you.
Almost ready to slip "the surly bonds of Earth".
thanks for the weather update
A lot of the country is having the same heat wave, I can't control that. Just letting everyone know a head of time, that I don't fly in that type of heat. I hope you understand that.
What a great fast taxi ride! Thanks for bringing us along! Outstanding!
I am looking to get a anti-vibration mount to help with the shaky view. Plus the new camera may do a better job as well.
Happy Father’s Day Don. That camera view was one of the best ones yet. Thank you for putting in the work putting these videos together so we can enjoy them. You’re becoming quite the videographer. I like to see you take the time each time to buckle up, very important you just never know when something might happen. When I used to drag race I was always in full safety gear even when doing testing. Have a great week.
Thanks, I will adjust the seat belt before the next run.
Good job on the camera mount, I thought it was a great view, felt like I was sitting on the wing, I can't wait to see that tail come up again, keep up the good work.
Happy Father’s Day Don, thank you for the great camera angle! Can’t wait for future progress. 👍
Thanks, the new camera should give me a wider view.
Thanks again for the update on your recent work : )
I really liked the pitot camera angle as well as the tail angle, thanks Don!
Thanks
Happy Father's day Don, awesome view
UA-cam's biggest update channel in their history
Excellent camera angle.
I'll improve the vibration as I do more test.
Don, that new tail wheel tracked REALLY NICE! 🙂
It did look good.
who are you people
@@Scott-ol9zs Courteous people, unlike some!
Looking good Don. Don’t care for the commercial before your video
I don't pick the commercials, sorry.
Another amazing video keep up the Good work
Will do.
That new camera mount will be a game changer.
a game changer to what
@@Scott-ol9zs Better view!
That was a great place to mount the camera! The tailwheel tracks excellent! I'm sure as you taxi more, you'll grow more accustomed to the crosswind characteristics.
I already feel better with the winds, but today tested me some. I'll get there, just need more seat time.
Just a humble opinion here...I would paint the aft cockpit bulkhead, (area behind your head), Zinc Chromate Green. It would add to the look of authentic....the unpainted wood look, makes it look (less) authentic. Just a humble opinion. She is a GORGEOUS bird and you are doing a fantastic job with all of this. Looking forward to your big grin after you get her parked from your maiden flight.😊
I wanted to do the whole interior in zinc green, it just wasn't a need to do item.
I'm very anxious to see you fully rotate your amazing aircraft. I bet you are too
Yes I am.
Short, but sweet. You didn't crash😅. Fly, Don, fly!
Great job.
Thanks
Well, to quote Rosanna Danna, "NEVER MIND" 😂
Keep up the GREAT work!
A crack of dawn preflight of plane and self. Last minute weather, a pat on the cowl for luck, climb in, pre-takeoff checklist, then...PORT MEADVILLE Traffic, ...THIS IS EXPERIMENTAL NOVEMBER ONE EIGHT ZERO EIGHT SIX, TAKING OFF RUNWAY ZERO SEVEN FOR MAIDEN FLIGHT AND PATTERN WORK, PORT MEADVILLE. Oh yeah! It won't be long now!
Sounds good to me.
G'day Don,
Yay Team !
Excellent stuff mate...
I was a bit concerned that clamping onto the base of the Pitot Tube might impede the Boundary-Layer draining back from the Pressure-ports & Orifice..., Overthunkin' as par for the course.
It looks great.
Now, if you can organise to only fly
Downsun into a perfect "Cerelean Blue" Dome of a Sky, then the Light-Dominant Aperture-Software in the Camera will ignore the Bright Sky by the "Blue-Screen" Effect, so the rest of the Frame
Will retain even Lighting, which allows for really good
Colour-Contrast.
The more Cloud or Haze in the Sky, I find, then the more "Light-Struck" the Images will be, resulting in bright-white
"Burnt-out" Clouds with dark Sky behind & shadowy Ground under the Pearly Sky...; kinda thing.
The local Weather department of the Universal Creator Godtheory threw me a couple of such really top-notch Days recently..., and I captured both with the Chestplate-mounted Body-Camera one...
"Blue-Sky Electric Motorcycling ; Glen Innes Skybridge, Australian Standing Stones, Analemmic Calendar!"
Showing a trip into town on the Highway...; and,
"Golden Light, Electric Motorcycle Pizza-Run, Deepwater to Yarraford ; 29 Km in 51 min., 31 Km/hr Av. Speed."
Coming home on the Tertiary Rural Road Network (because that stretch of highway is unsafe to share with Traffic doing 100 Km/hr when limited to 45...; Guardrails too close to the Fog-Line, and Double unbroken Centrelines 4 inches apart for a couple of miles.).
Dirt Road with savage Potholes and some vicious Corrugations beats super close Formation Manoeuvres performed continually, with strangers at 2 ft of altitude.
In my view, at least.
But, yeah, for truly
Eye-popping footage,
Late afternoon
Going towards a
Clear Blue Sky, with that
Horizontal golden light flowing over your shoulder...;
I
LIKE it...(!).
Keep on keeping on,
Stay safe.
;-p
Ciao !
The camera had no adverse effects on the pitot readings so far. There are vent holes at the front of the lager diameter tube. So the camera is all the way at the base. At least 4-6 inches behind the vents.
The camera sceen was hard to see in the lighting stand inside the hanger looking out. Also tough to see outside in the light. But the auto adjusting part of the camera seems to be doing a good job. This is a Sony handy cam, so it's not a cheap camera.
The best time to test and fly would be just before sunset. When I got home an hour later it was great out. wouldn't you figure.
So thanks as always, see you on the next one.
God luck Don, happy fathers day
Thanks.
As someone commented, I too am thinking a Corsair style leather headrest to cover that thumb nut would be nice. In an incident rich environment that test flying is, your head and neck and body will do things you never would or could willingly. You know stuff happens; "belle" can be replaced, you, not so easy. Also I agree, It's helmet time on these runups...you're doing 50/60 MPH, you can get hurt in a wind gust or tire failure or whatever. I sound like just a dottering old fool but I used to ride big bikes and never wore a helmet until one memorable accident 53 yrs ago. I've never seen Steve Hinton (PofF) or Thom Richard (CAF) play with their Corsairs without a helmet.
The plans do have a small head rest that you can put on. I will make one and install it. But my head still would be very hard to even touch it. There is no room for a helmet. My headset touches the canopy now. I plan on making a deeper canopy sometime. This is only a half scale replica, not even close to full scale.
@@Dynodon64I know, I'm just rambling. I like the plane a lot and you've put so much effort into it. You have excellent skills and it shows.
@@raybame5816 Thanks for the concerns. I'm working on it now.
Happy Father's Day! That bird is beautiful as always I enjoy watching the progress and improvements you've do to it. Thanks for taking the time to share these videos with the YT community. God bless. Btw: Cam on the cowling is not a good point of view. The wing option is the best for sure or the tail end imho.
I'll try different locations until I'm happy. We'll see how the new camera does.
A good review position for the camera to check how the tail is working.
Yes it is.
Time to fly her my friend, you can only check everything so many times.
Plane looks and sounds great. If you don't push that stick forward, that tail isn't gonna come up. It'll just fly off in the 3 point attitude once it's fast enough.
Well done! If it gets too sketchy, call it!
Will do.
I love the idea of the go-pro on the vertical stab.
That should be a great view.
Хорошая работа
Concerns: I wouldn’t mount that camera with a clamp out in front of the wing. Heard of other people doing that and having some problems. What about aerodynamic concerns. Another thing, don’t mean to scare you but the distance from the back of the wing to the front of the Horizontal Stabilizer is not very long; keep this in mind when flying it; don’t get behind the curve. This plane is not like a 172; definitely not as easy to fly. Good Luck.
Thanks for the concerns and advice. A lot of people mount cameras on the top of the wing tips, and don't seem to have any problems. Time will tell though.
@@Dynodon64 yes they do but not with a clamp. With a screw down type. I have one for my RV-4 that I screw in on the bottom of the wing where the tie down rings are. Works excellent.
I’m still worried about your wingnut. Is same sort of thing as your belt buckle. Should be ok when everything is perfect, but Murphy is very creative. A negative G in flight, a rough landing, who knows?
Sure
Like I said , My head can't reach it.
Just when you thought it made me 109 had a tight cockpit
Another fun video to watch. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Do you have a 'planned' timeframe for first flights?
No plans, it will just happen on a test.
Enjoyed this episode Don. I think when it's ready to fly and you throttle up for take off speed the rudder wii be giving you a better response to control the aircraft.
Faster you go the better it will be.
What do you think?
The faster I go, the more sensitive it will become. But in the air, it's just stick and rudder like any other plane.
Unreal 😊💪💪💪
Great view....i noticed your prop spins clockwise . So getting tail wheel time in a counter clockwise rotating engined plane wouldn't be much help. Have you tried pushing the stick forward to get the tail up?
I had the tail up in the last video. Yes I have to use left rudder on takeoff. I hold the stick level or just a little forward.
Would slight lower reservoir level csuse it to run warmer? No. It's ground Op's in summer.
Yes that's about right.
Being that you filled the coolant reservoir halfway and it may overfill, I would at least add a hose facing downward so that way the water doesn't spill onto your hose or alternator. You wouldn't want to lose power during takeoff or flight. Please tell me you tightened that hose clap at the oil filler cap! Much much better view.
I do intend to add a drain hose to the bottom of the cowl. The oil cap hose is tight. It just moves a little from the mount clamp.
Jesus Christ, just get in it and fly it already
Forget the taxiing just fly it, otherwise park it on your lawn for a weathervane.
And how many planes have you built from scratch and flown? I'll wait!
Don what is your experience with tail Wheels? pick a spot at the end of the runway and keep your eye on it you'll stay way ahead of the plane also if you have differential braking that will help tremendously I used to fly them squirrely little Mark Brown Starlites and you got to stay ahead of them or they'll get away from you.
The only problem with picking a spot out ahead, is, you can't see over the nose. But I do know what you mean. I see you avatar pic, and I fly Gyro's too.
@Dynodon64 @Dynodon64 I've learned over the years that flying taildraggers requires full commitment get on the power get the tail up so you can see over the cowling and fly. Stay up a while don't even attempt to landing till you got a good feel of the aircraft. I had a 3/4 scale Fokker D7 that thing was impossible to see over the cowling... I just had to get that tail up and go. Yes been flying Gyros for over 30 years.
@@teeterblock I started flying gyro gliders in 86'.
@Dynodon64 92 for me I was 21
If belt tension is fine try some CRC belt conditioner to get rid of the squeal.
Last time the belt was loose. When it squealed before, I could see the volt meter drop. It didn't drop this time.
I’m concerned about the obsession with the wind sock I see. Have you flown anything else lately to get your TW endorsement?
The windsock is your friend. No tailwheel time, except this one.
@@Dynodon64 I understand a windsock . Please keep this in the manner it is intended, but you very seriously need to get your tail wheel endorsement in something entry level , then additional time in anything similar to yours(not sure what that would be ..Pitts?) I’m not by any means a keyboard warrior, but a 24,000 hr professional pilot with all but 4000 of those hours being nose wheel. I was flying Beech 18’s at 22 yrs old on scheduled nightly routes, then DC3’s . experience in tiger moth, Stearman, AT6, M-18 , Owned a Howard DGA-15, Waco ARE , I own a Beech 18 now , and a Radial Rocket that I raced at Reno, and currently am a crop duster for the last 24 yrs. You’ve spent so much time on this, I’d hate to see you or the airplane get banged up. I only started paying attention to your videos because a good friend of mine, who is more into these types, that I started watching.
@@agairinc Thank you for your concerns.
Next time Don maybe mount the camera upside down so you can see if the gear doors are flexing much. Your getting up around speeds should be thinking about putting the brain bucket on.
LOL
In the future when I get ready to try the gear retract, I will mount the camera so I can see the doors. No room for a helmet.
i see why your so cautious about the wind... What would be the difference in airspeed between taxi with the tailwheel where you want it and beeing airborne?
The winds help with airspeed by reducing ground speed, if it's coming more head on. If the plane needs 60 mph to get airborne, and you have a 10 mph headwind, the plane will fly at 50 mph ground speed. It will take @65 mph to lift off.
What does that have to do with posting videos of you actually maintaining currency.
I post flying videos with friends and instructors all the time.
When did you last fly?
Well that's good for you, but I'm not that way.
👍👍👍
What engine is that in your project plane?
Subaru EJ22 2.2 litre 1990
Why don't you post any videos of your currency training, biannual flight reviews or tailwheel practice or any flying for that matter. Are you legal to fly?
I don't record others. That just gets in the way of the work that you are doing. Yes I'm legal.
So when is the big day Don? Are going to fly it?
I don't plan the day, it will happen when it all comes together and feels right.
@@Dynodon64 It's a lot easier for people to egg you on from the cheap seats. You will be the one in the plane what that time comes, not them. I do find myself wondering at times what you have in your head for what you want to see happen before you think might be when it all comes together and feels right. Is time, practice at going down the runway with tail up the last step before actual takeoff or are there other things you want to do as well? Is the runway sufficiently long enough where you could get all three wheels off the ground momentarily before settling back down on all three and is this a step along the way? Just curious.
@@RebelByNature Yes a few runs down the runway with the tail all the way up is the current goal. Once that happens, it's up to the winds being just right for first flight. Not planned, it will just feel right and off it goes.
Is that a subaru engine?? Im an automotive tech... looks familiar
it is
EJ22 1990.
9:24. - 12: 25
subaru engine?
Yes EJ22
Hey Don, I've been meaning to ask what are the dimensions of the cockpit? It looks awful cramped in there for a fella of your height.
The cockpit is just shy of 24 inches wide. I'm 6'-1". Any taller and it would be hard to use the rudder pedals. My elbows rub on the insides.
yeh, change that wing nut near your head. In a "bad" landing, you will touch every part of the cockpit with every part of you, including your head. Plan for the worst and hope for the best. If your not planning to have a "bad" landing, you should not be a pilot.
forget the camera go fly the plane ,
When I'm ready and the plane is ready, it will fly.
could not see the tail wheel rolling - needs a registration mark on tire and rim? - Where you at max rt. rudder a couple of times? looked like a lot of input ..... love the new camera position.
Tail wheel is turning, just want to see when it comes up. Yes I was at max rudder a couple of times. Right rudder was to counteract the wind gusting from the left, weather vanning effect at slow speeds.
