    Hmmm weird. I'm in Hawaii and 3 of my avo trees are in the 40 ft high range, all 3 are different varieties but their so tall I don't have the set up to pick them easily. I've found that they get loaded with fruit and then drop them slowly 1 or 2 at a time, I'll go do a walk around in the morning and collect avos off the ground. They are still hard but do ripen in about 4-5 days, none of them have ever had roots growing and they have always tasted good. Trust me I've brought big bowls of guacamole places with those avos and the bowl never lasts long. I think the main thing that caused that avo to taste so bad is the rooting seed.

      That particular variety is good during the month of August September and October. I did this taste test on January 10 so it was two months too late.

    My guess is once it sprouts the fruit needs to protect the seed germinate and it releases something to make it taste nasty to keep anything from eating it.

    I didn't know seeds can germinate like this in fruits, let alone avocados! It's weird watching you eat an avocado and then being absolutely disappointed. But sometimes, you have to pick certain fruit at the right time.

    I want to say thank for all the great knowledge you provide.
    My wife and I moved ton the Philippines 3 years ago. Recently I have planted 20 trees, native and Hass (US via Mexico).
    I come back to the U.S. every summer for work.
    The size of the the varieties that you have are MASSIVE.😜.. Am I insane to try and grow them here?
    Order when I’m back in the US and return with the seeds?

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  Рік тому +1

      Life in the 'Bog, you will be able to grow these varieties in Philippines but not from seed. My recommendation is to find a nursery over there that have trees of varieties like these. There are a lot of different types of avocado and I know there are options over there. Mango too.

    Love these videos Mr Tom. I think it could be that the Catalina is pure west Indian. Maybe just the Guatemalan type could be left to hang a bit longer?

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  4 місяці тому +1

      I don't think any of them are gonna last 6 months like this one and still taste good. I don't know if it's because of the heat but I find my early varieties have a shorter life on the tree while my lates can to 3 months or even a little more.

    When I came here to the states to live I couldn't believe grocery stores would take the bananas that had browning on them and put them in boxes under the stand . I asked the worker why? She said because people won't buy them. they think they re rotten. I couldn't believe people actually DON"T KNOW ....That is when its READY TO EAT!! when its completely yellow its not ripe all the way. So in short people in the USA have gotten use to eating half ripen fruits and vegetables so this doesn't surprise me that people don't know how to eat Avocado.

    • @SleepyLizard

They were still pretty green on the inside and nice white flesh on the inside of the part from the graft cuttings some slight browning I noticed where the buds were on the inside where the new bud was 🤞🏻next time I hope to
    Make the time to graft immediately but something came up! Sorry for so much info just curious what you think the success will be since it was the next day when the grafting took place. Thx again tom your input is always helpful.

    That's the problem with American avocado production. You guys do not harvest until the time is right. Then you leave it on the tree for too long. With my store bought fruit, I'll never have the problem of a fruit with a sprouted seed. Because avocado growers in Peru, are only paid pennies on the dollar. They are motivated to harvest and ship in volume. They strip the tree, in order to make a meager living. I only get fruit which is picked too early, and rubbery.
