Iron Maiden has always been very Bass guitar driven, probably the most consistent Hard Rock/ Heavy Metal band around!

This features Paul Di'Anno, who was the first lead singer of Iron Maiden. He was with the band for the first 2 albums, when Maiden was in their "punk-metal" phase. This song was off their first (self titled) album which was an amazing album really. There were problems with Paul's personal life with some substance abuse, which led to Bruce Dickinson joining the band for what would be their 3rd album and many more to come (and the rest was history as the old saying goes). While Bruce will forever be my favorite Maiden singer (and one of my favorite singers period), Paul Di'Anno deserves tons of credit for being really good on these first 2 albums. I'm so glad that someone suggested this, and I've even more glad that you reacted to it!!

Clearly there are more popular reaction choices for Maiden out there but this choice definitively encapsulates everything magical about the greatest Metal band of them all. Nice reaction, thanks for choosing Phantom.

Paul Di'anno is so epic. I wish he would sttill be an Iron Maiden thing :). I saw them live during Di'annos tenure and man he was so awesome. More punkrock and speedmetal than Bruce. Both are still good though.

This performance simply blows my Mind, specially this performance in the Ruskin Arms club in early 1980,they had just signed their first record deal and that was their breaking point even when they were only a successful local band, but that Night in a sweaty, dirty and Small club they were as hughe as a band as they were a couple of years after when they played in Arenas and Stadiums, this lads were fire since the beginning and they didn't Take no prisoners, they just went for It,you can feel the hunger their attitude, all of them and their compromise,no fuckin' money on It,just a bunch of lads doin' their BEST,those were the golden years, hats off to Paul, 'cause despite he wasn't technically as good as Bruce Was,he had his own style, more rough, more edgy and very únique.Never expected to watch this early perfomance, thanks a lot. apreciate

A little backstory on this song, before anything else:
Le Fantôme de l'Opéra is a 1910 novel, written by Gaston Leroux, and it's about a hideously deformed man named Erik who had grown up in circuses and caravans, envying professional performance. Not being pretty enough to work for a local opera house in Paris, France, The Phantom stalks its personnel, murdering them and blackmailing them in an effort to get his breakthrough, his starring role, in a major production. His plans fall apart when he becomes enamored with an actress named Christine, who tricks him into his death, ridding that theatre of its "curse". This song was written by Iron Maiden's bassist Steve Harris from the perspective of those spectating Erik's evil deeds as The Phantom, choking the life out of every show, like a devil.
    The band's lineup here was:
    Paul Di'Anno - lead vocals
Steve Harris - bass guitar, backing vocals
Dave Murray - guitar, backing vocals
Dennis Stratton - guitar, backing vocals
    Clive Burr - drums
Phantom of the Opera was on Iron Maiden's first record, Iron Maiden, released in 1980, and it's the longest track by over a minute, being essentially the band's first epic. This performance was at the Marquee Club in Soho, London, England, which you'd seen in David Bowie's 1973 performance of Space Oddity. This was an extremely early performance for the band, though a few years into their career. Dennis was asked to leave Iron Maiden soon after this because the other members didn't like his music taste, then Paul and Clive had drug and partying problems, so they were replaced by late 1980, 1981, and 1983, respectively, with Adrian Smith, Bruce Dickinson, and Nicko McBrain. In between, there was a great record named Killers, which many hold to be the finest album of Iron Maiden's Paul Di'Anno era. It was an amazing lineup, as brilliant as Iron Maiden have been with their newer members, for the past 40 years. Some believe that he and Bruce were complete equals, with Blaze Bayley from the '90s the only poor fit on vocals. I'm inclined to agree, and this song is one of those great ones that cement every reasoning why.
Bruce had done this song with the band on a few tours. My favorite years are 1986 and 2005, for those performances. Understandably, he'd done an amazing job. Most people prefer one or the other, though usually Bruce comes out on top. Paul really did have something special, though!!! 😃😄

On something? Yeah, so was I when I got heavily into this band. This is the Paul Di-Anno I spoke of the lead before Bruce filled his boots. Looking back, I can see a lot now that never occurred to me back then. Iron Maiden were a very good cross over between punk and metal, bringing their own take on what heavy music aught to be. And didn't they do well. Another point that a want to make, (Don't tell the kids. They'll kill me), is that although very heavy and equally as fast, there's a noticeable opera element to the writing of their music. That's the main thing that set Maiden apart from the run of the mill bands of the day. Then Bruce got on board, and took them into commercial stardom, and has kept them in that position, even after leaving the the band, for a while. While another pretty good singer called Blaze Bailey took over. But Bruce didn't need too much persuading to take the helm once more. But, alas, I've heard whispers that Bruce is talking about retirement. I don't know if that would be the end for Maiden or not. Neither do I know whether Bruce was on about retiring from touring, or from Maiden altogether. I do know that a short while ago his ex wife was lost leaving Bruce and their kid's devastated. When these tragedies happen, people can often make life changing decisions.
The majority of Maiden's material was similar in make up to this, with a heavy tendency to sing of horror, and things of darkness in general. The music has remained loyal to a recognisable sound and style too. Until that is the two latest albums, where there is a notable maturity to the writing, and the songs seem slower and more wholesome in the writing, performing and producing.
These guys have enjoyed a long and successful career, and have taken their brand to heights they could only dream of in the beginning. I still listen to the 1st 2 albums all these years later. Truly ground braking, and years ahead of their time.
You don't know how happy I am to see you take in Iron Maiden at the start of their crusade across the globe with British heavy metal. Say I with a small amount of pride.

Glad to see you doing vintage Maiden, this song especially is better live than studio, especially the guitar solo. Change ups in the song certainly keep it from being boring, I always love the Maiden gallop.

It doesn`t make it more difficult for the musicians, it makes it more fun for them to play we used to do a couple of Maiden tunes back in the mid-90`s great fun to play 🤘🎶🎸 if you thought they changed melodies, have a listen to a band called RUSH 😉😉

Brings me back to the days of seeing Maiden in '79/'80 at the Ruskin Arms, Heavy Metal Soundhouse, Cart & Horses, the Brecknock, etc. Sadly never got to see them with Paul Mario Day or Den Wilcock on vocals.

Great choice!! This is Maiden at their hungriest, and rawest ever live sound. It's a masterpiece of a song. You might want to check out the album version (the album is 'Iron Maiden'). and the 'Live After Death' version from 1984. Both stunning tracks, and a little more 'polished'. This. Is. Iron. Maiden!!!!! love it!
Loving your channel. Very unique and you have a great appreciation of how talented Maiden actually are, considering the many time changes they bring to their music and how flawless the manage it. I love your voice too, very calming and relaxing. All the very best to you and your channel!

Revelations is definitely one of the next interesting songs to do, live at Rock in Rio 1985. That performance of it in particular is an absolute peak of Iron Maiden's iconicism, especially on Bruce's end, imo. It's gonna hit, and it's gonna be amazing!!! I'm looking forward to that one!!! More Di'Anno later on will definitely be exciting, particularly the start of a trilogy. 🥰💙
