No way, brother. Paul kills this song! I'm late to the party, but thank you for that. I've been a staunch Maiden fan since '81. I always knew they'd blow up one day and be hugely popular. It really didn't take long. Up The Irons!
Andrew Lloyd Weber started writing the musical around 1984 and it opened in London's West End in 1986. But of course, it was based on the Gaston Leroux novel from 1910, which was also adapted into a silent film starring Lon Chaney in 1925. So, yeah, the Iron Maiden song pre-dates the musical.
Davey just doesn't change 😁😁 Also in the early 90s there was a lucozade ad with Daley Thompson featuring this song. So maybe where you recognise it from.
It was a hot summer day in my hometown in Eagle pass and the year was 1980, 17-year-old headbanging rocker just got paid and went to our hometown music store. I was already a collector of many bands at that point, I kept looking and searching found 5 of the greatest albums of that era, Judas Priest British Steel, Scorpions Animal Magnetism, UFO No place to run, Def Leppard On through the Night, and Iron Maiden Iron Maiden got home and started with Iron Maiden and I was blown away and became an instant fan to this day I have their collection of all five bands among other bands. As much as I love the first two albums with Paul Di Anno when 1982 came in and Iron Maiden introduced me to Bruce Dickinson then I knew they made the right choice. What? in that era between the mid-'70s and '80s we called the British invasion of metal. holy crap I forgot about one other album I found that time and it is a timely classic Triumph Progressions of Power. No, Lee, it is not a medley there were still bands doing the progressive thing to their songs, and that made those songs very loved if anything prog-rock or prog-metal kicks ass IMO. This is the main reason why Miho of Lovebites is in love with Iron Maiden and Steve Harris, Lovebites has become the epitome of Iron Maiden Iconic sound and genre.
Lucasade, my friend. Lucasade. Phantom of the Opera was used in a classic Lucasade advert with sporstsman Daley Thompson on the track, I don't know, in the 80's?
Hi Lee, new subscriber based on your reactions to Maiden. Gave me goose bumps seeing your response to the best metal band of all time. As I'm sure your aware by now Maiden were one of the founders of the NWOBHM (New wave of British Heavy metal), these included bands like Saxon, Judas Priest and Samson who's lead singer would later go on to be Maiden's much loved front man Bruce Dickinson. The albums Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden, and Iron Maiden - Killers both featured lead singer Paul Di'Anno. Bruce would replace Di'anno for the third album Number Of The Beast of which you have already done a reaction to my fav Maiden track "Hallowed Be Thy Name"......keep up the great work and up the Irons....regards PJ;) 🤟
First time I've seen or heard this one. Can hear a couple of their songs thrown in there, like a medley. This looks pretty early, so maybe some of their songs started off from this. That was great
One thing that rarely gets mentioned is that Steve Harris wrote this iconic hard rock song at age 20 or 21 and it was played live around the UK for several years before Maiden signed their first record deal (a separate story fans should know more about). When other local bands were playing covers, Maiden was breaking stuff like this out. It's not metal. Harris was introducing a new twist to the prog music he loved from Tull, Genesis, Yes, etc., with a rock edge influenced by Wishbone Ash, UFO, Zep, Sabbath and Purple. Wish people would stop lumping it into metal. Separate genre they created.
Listen to Echoes by Pink Floyd (1971) and then Phantom of the opera by A. Lloyd Webber (1986) ; he stole iconic notes from P. F. So IMO I. Maiden's Phantom is a 100% original composition inspired by the omonymous 1909 novel.

It was from the lucozade advert with Daley Thompson back in the 80's

Thank you. You saved me googling the years of ALW'S show. Gotta say... first time I've heard this track.... to borrow your phrase... it's brilliant.

Nice song to get ready for work too🔥Excellent reaction🤘🏻
It's amazing for the sound and video quality that has been preserved. My first time hearing someone other than Bruce with Maiden. Nice! Cheers!!
I really likes Paul Di'Anno as a vocalist...but he was clearly beaten by Dickonson's performances.
I prefer Bruce's live versions the one at download was a particular favourite. This was from their first album in 1980

Totally agree
Bruce Dickinson voice is much better and his version of phantom of the opera is much better sound.
