SUGARCOATED'S SIDEBAR:
During these times all the TV shows wanted us to mime the entire performance which we were reluctant to do. A compromise was reached with the shows we finally performed on.
We revisited the studio and did a special TV mix. The lead vocal, some of the background vocals, and a few instruments were muted.
Thus Cory's vocal is completely live and so is the piano, hi-hat, and toms. Stony & August's microphones are live but their background vocals are also on tape thus at times they are doubling themselves. The bellhop singers in the background, horn section, Vibraphones, Guitar, Bass, most of the Drum kit, Percussion, and synthesizer are miming. Notice also that you hear but do not see strings.
Addendum: In those days there were no automated boards or home music software/computers etc. In order to duplicate the exact mix you had to take polaroids/pictures of the board and painstakingly notate all the knob settings for everything including EQs, reverbs, delays, volume faders, etc. When we did the TV remix we used the mixing documentation in order to maintain as much as possible the integrity of the original record mix.
BELLHOP SIDEBAR The Bellhop background singers were just hired for the show.
- Debra Anderson (left) went on and became part of the disco group Stargard.
- Lynda Seals (right) has worked with various artists including Friends of Distinction, Lola Falana, Bill Cosby, Abbe Lane, Johnny Mathis, and Helen Reddy
Also, appearing on the show was Bernadette Peters who was excited to meet the band or so we thought. Backstage I got to meet her first and she was very sweet but she was more interested in meeting Patti Austin? Patti who is an amazing talent and nice person did background vocals on the record for us but Bernadette mistakenly thought she was the lead vocalist.

I was a teenager when this song was out and now I'm 60 years old. It seems like just yesterday. 😮
My mother would play this while I was in her womb. I've loved this every since. I miss and love u mommy.
Cory Daye, I've been in luv with you for 45 years. You are a fantastic singer and performer.
😂 get in line, the line starts back there. Cory4ever❤
Dudes on bass guitar and xylophone are killing it with the dancing
I swear I closed my eyes and it's like I was 12 years old again! I miss my youth and the music that we had! Now I'm a 51 year old grandfather!! WHERE DID THE TIME GO?????
+Curtiss Carter I feel ya Curtiss ... hey have you seen this from the 1st TV show ? www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi3507924761
Curtiss Carter YES!!!!!!!!!!!....ME TOO
Curtiss Carter I swear !!!
My brother I swear I feel you I wish I could go back so many good times
Oh! Did the time go somewhere? I'm 67 and what i do, is close my eyes as often as i can and remember.
This band was so unique and so ahead of it's time. I believe the listening audience during that time period were far too dull to fully appreciate the eclectic genius of this band. Cory's charm and stage presence is awesome. She had class and a style that IMO makes all these divas that are out there today look lame. I love August's dance moves. Totally off the wall.
We most certainly appreciated this band's contribution during the 70s . I was there just remember the 70s bands sure had a lot of competition. This band later became Kid Creole and the Coconuts .
Big band sound of the 40’s & 50’s
@@dixielatino "I'm a wonderful thing..." ✨️😊💛
My dream is to go to Cuba. Always love their music 🎉
Thank you Coati for keeping this music alive. This was the best time of my life. The late 70's and the 80's.
I thank you Ronald

I graduated from high school in 1976. This song was playing on every radio stations. Oh the God memories.
I remember it from that period also. It seems that I don't remember hearing it until around the fall of 1976 when I was a senior in high school and I graduated in 77. The first stanza was about Tommy Motola who was the bands manager and he was nowhere near as big and famous then as he would later become, of course.
She is just SOOOOOO awesome & cool!!!!
Talk about unique, they had then and will always do, I was 15 years old when that song came out that album was great I still have it, to me it's got sentimental value, Disco.will always live for people that have taste.....
The band is great, thier music timeless Cory Daye is Gorgeous!
Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic! This group had the style, class and the sound. I love the fact their dog is always there at every performance sitting under the Piano. Love to know his story with the Band. No doubt he was one well travelled canine!
I like this Band & the leading lady if a fine fox!!!
I DARE you to not move your body to this songs beat!!! IMPOSSIBLE!!
Just loved this band.........Takes me back to my youth. It was such a fresh and different sound....Great Memories!
I remember the day I saw this vinyl at a thrift shop 20 years ago. M y heart almost leaped out my chest because I knew I had just found aural gold!!!! I also love that I hear this nearly everyday on the Studio 54 radio station. Timeless and pure class. Much respect to you Coati and everyone who created these musical masterpieces.
Cheers Adrian .... u might get a kick out of this if you haven't seen it yet => www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi2346037273

I had to endure many years with a old scratched and noisy copy but about a year ago I came across a pristine copy in a 2nd hand record shop in Amsterdam of all places . Made my heart jump out too!
Great Song by them, still love it after 40 years!!!!!!
Thanks for your kind words. It truly was a wonderful experience. (I'm the one on the right =*) This group was far ahead of its time, if I may say so myself. Have a great day!
I love the way Tony Orlando introduces them! He was such a cutie in the 1970s!
Wonderful song, recording and group!!! Why can't we go back to that time again??? Today's music sucks big time!! Love it!!
This was one of the greatest groups from the mid-late 70's disco era. all good musicians, and Cory Day was unique in her style. Looks wise, she reminds me of Martha Raye.
Robert Conti Jazz Guitar Cheers Robert ..did u c this click link www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi2346037273
She does look like Martha Raye
First heard this tune while doing my 8th grade homework during a week night back in late 1976. Heard it again back in the mid 1980s' while listening to Larry King talk radio show. A song I just could never forget !
The most beautiful piece of musical cruelty ever!
A performance, ensemble and song so good it’s historic.
Thanks for the memories
OMG, how I love this song, and Cory, she is really feeling it.
This song is a gem! I have loved this song since the first time I heard it many years ago. It puts a smile on my face every time I hear it.
Thanks for sharing your sentiment
I Love to ROLLER SKATE to this song...da BEST energy filled song ever made
I "came out" in 1983 and just about every gay man I ever met had this LP in his record collection. I didn't know who they were at first, but when someone played me the record, I said "I think I saw them on Tony Orlando and Dawn once." A visual and audial delight!
Here's Tony

I remember this tune when it was hit. I've always been a blues/rock fan but loved this song then and still do today. Pretty incredible mix of influences here but mostly grabbing the big band sound - which I love for its sophisticated arrangements and great musicianship.
I especially love the story in the lyrics even though a verse was skipped due to TV time constraints. Also the little flourishes - like the female backups - replicate the vibe from an era of musical giants.
2020. Still can't get enough
Dreamy❤
High Class Music! Fabulous Memories!
PRICELESS !!!!!!!!
You'd have to be comatose to not be rockin' your gluteus maximus to this wonderful sound!
Me likee too much.

Go on, try to sit still...and the leads haunting and vibrant voice!
Perfect word for the lead singer's vocals: haunting ❤️🔥
Wow! I hustled many a night in Discos to this song💖🥰🥰. I love it! It brings back many nights hanging with " the children".🌈 We were fabulous!🔥🔥🔥
I remember growing up as a kid listening to this song and watching this group before they were awesome then there are some now nothing like a real band with a real lead singer and background vocals this group has it all this was a wonderful place in time
This is truly a good song. I was born in 1976 and I enjoy watching things from that year in particular.
Gotta love Tony Orlando's tux!
this song occasionally plays in my mind, So than I have to come and listen to it on youtube. Its one of the songs i actually like playing in my mind. and i was in my late teens when this tune 1st hit the airwaves. Man has it be nearly 50 years since that time?
Play Gloria!
One evening in Georgetown/DC club hopping early 1970's walked into Trammps Club on Wisconsin Ave, NW and heard this infectious song. On the first note couples descended to the dance floor - black, white, latin, asian, middle eastern - beautiful sight to see! I learned latin dance, the hustle, and hand dancing off this song by this band! I'll never forget this song, this band and the night I learned to latin dance!
Cory sounds great singing live!

I also was at Trammp's in Georgetown back in the 1970's to see Savannah Band as mentioned by Dolly Davis below. I've never forgotten that night nor the music. My favorite still is Hard Times. Wish we'd see more music like this again.
I was n junior high school in da seventies....real music played on da radio.......

My thoughts exactly ......................
Never heard this song until it came on the radio one night in 1981. I immediately popped in a cassette and hit play/record. Got a little bit of the song and cherished it here and there. Finally found out during the 90s what is was.
I had a bleak youth. All the kids at my HS only listening to hard rock to the exclusion of all else. They'd get all angry and mean when they listened to it, which I never understood. All their dads made good money back then, in the construction trades.
Whad they have to be so angry about? If they'd known I liked music like this and other stuff, they'd have declared me a f_ggot and beat me up.
Oh my God. I totally forgot about this song until I heard it on my internet radio station and wow the memories came back from the 70s. I had to pull this up on you tube. This was dope back in the 70s. I love it. Never will music like this again.
Glad you found it again Christopher

Hi Coati! Just a word or two here from the other Bellhop! Hi to you too, August and Cory! This is an incredible treat and those were fantastic times! By the way, if you happen to be in touch with Debra...or Deb, if you should happen to read this...drop me a line!!! Coati, it's really nice to see this segment with Tony's intro intact. Watching it makes me feel like it was literally yesterday when we did this. Beaucoup d'amour a tout le monde! Talk soon--Be well and happy =*)

@COATI MUNDI HI Coati the first album when you guys recorded in NYC. How long did it take you record that album??? Did you and August over see the orchestra arrangements???
Hi BellHop don't you think this should have been a movie and have done any other musical projects???
@@garysmith8073 Not sure ...seemed like years but probably over the course of 3 or 4 months on and off .... we all contributed however Stony for the most part supervised the orchestral arrangements along with Charles Calello who as the trained music adult at the time placed the notes to paper. Btw it was actually recorded in New Jersey.
AWESOME tune from the college days. THEY DON'T MAKE MUSIC LIKE THIS ANYMORE.

The "BEST ALBUM EVER!" I say; play all cuts daily, myriad times. keeps me 'happy-go-lucky' regardless of what dischord assails the world. My "best escape" from "feeling down" to feeling "well" whenever "doubt" enters its nasty tug on my spirit. Myriad blessings are willed upon spirits of all passed members of "dr buzzard's origninal savannah band" (DBOSB) as well as the 'still living' ones this side of the grass; especially you "sugar-coated Andy!" Am delighted you're here inspiring me to beg for more. So, go on Coati; I dare you. "Up and at 'em, amigo!" ;-)

Who Else Is Watching This And Rocking In 2020
June 2024
If I had to pick one dance tune from the ‘70s to listen to it would be this one. I first heard it on a K-Tel record when I was a kid (11 yrs old, around 1976). I played it to death in my room. My mother loved it too. I have all Dr.Buzzard’s LPs and CDs that are available. I listened to Big Band music in high school (Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Hal Kemp, etc) when others were listening to FM rock. Loved the 30s and 40s music and clothes. Dr. Buzzard’s epitomized style and great songs to dance to AND sing. “I’ll Play The Fool” is another great one.
Great !
yeah..I was there, too..! Maybe 89, 90.... Incredible. Top three concert experiences of my life. Thank you, Andy..! (The original album is one of those that I can't imagine living without. Definitely, a desert island album.)
Awesome !!
Ill be turning 30 next month. I first heard this song when I was around 7. My dad was playing some of his 45 records, and he had the 45 single version of this beautiful song. I got hooked on the song right away. Flash forward to a few years later when I got an ebay account. One of the first things I bought was the album that this beautiful song is featured in. I now listen to this album at least once a week, and it just sounds so great on vinyl!
