I'll share an eye-opening journey into the fascinating realms of anesthetics and psychedelics. In this video, we'll dive deep into the similarities and differences between these two intriguing substances, taking you through a comprehensive breakdown of their effects on the human body and mind.
We'll kick off our discussion with a thorough examination of the various types of anesthesia. This will help understand what the different types of anesthetics are (gas, liquid, etc.) and how powerful they are in the operating room for surgery.
Moving on, we'll delve into the crucial distinction between anesthesia and psychedelics, specifically in relation to their impact on the nervous system. We'll uncover how both substances work to alter consciousness and perception, albeit in significantly different ways. This comparison will set the stage for a deeper understanding of how these two categories of drugs differ in their effects on the body and mind.
We'll shift our focus to the essential tools used in anesthesia, such as intravenous agents and inhalational agents. By exploring the various methodologies employed in the administration of anesthesia, you'll gain a better understanding of how these powerful substances are used to induce a controlled loss of sensation and awareness.
Next the metaphor of the "sledgehammer" is used to explain the significant difference in the precision and control between anesthetics and psychedelics. This analogy will help illuminate the distinct ways in which these substances interact with the brain and influence human consciousness.
Continuing our exploration, we'll discuss the concept of low-dose anesthesia, examining the potential benefits and risks associated with this unique approach to sedation. This segment will provide valuable insight into the applications and potential consequences of using minimal amounts of anesthesia to achieve a desired effect.
Next, we'll tackle the intriguing question of whether or not patients can experience dreams under anesthesia. We'll examine the science behind this phenomenon and explore the role of the brain's Default Mode Network in shaping our experiences while under the influence of these potent substances.
Ketamine, a fascinating substance with properties of both anesthetics and psychedelics, will also be discussed. We'll delve into the unique aspects of this powerful drug, exploring its potential applications in the fields of medicine and mental health.
Emotions play a critical role in the overall experience of both anesthesia and psychedelics. We'll investigate the impact of these substances on our emotional states, as well as the ways in which they might reveal hidden emotions buried within our subconscious minds. This segment will offer valuable insight into the therapeutic potential of these powerful substances.
REM sleep, a critical component of our natural sleep cycle, is closely tied to the experiences induced by both anesthetics and psychedelics. We'll explore the connection between REM sleep and these substances, shedding light on the complex relationship between brain activity, consciousness, and altered states of awareness.
We'll also discuss the role of the frontal lobes in mediating the inhibitory effects of both anesthesia and psychedelics. This crucial area of the brain plays a pivotal role in the overall experience of these substances, as well as our ability to process and integrate the information they reveal.
The importance of the environment in shaping our experiences with both anesthetics and psychedelics cannot be understated, similar to the importance of medical supervision when these powerful substances are being used.

I only had surgery once. I had a complete quadriceps rupture and had to have it reattached. My experience with anesthesia was strange for me. I went out with the countdown and in my mind I was being waken up 2 seconds later. In reality it was about 4 hours and I woke up in a different room. That time I was under was a total blank for me. No psychedelic experience or even dreams of any kind. It was like I was just turned off and then turned back on. When I did wake up I was a little groggy for a few minutes but I knew where I was and was not confused or acting strangely. I don't remember what they used for the anesthesia. Thankfully they gave me a nerve block so I was pain free for a good 48 hours afterward.

I DO remember… the general anaesthetic didn’t work it only paralysed me, I couldn’t move or speak but could FEEL everything…

It's impossible for me to know what your experience was like, but a true psychedelic could be a tool for healing. A similar ego-death effect, but one in which you are fully safe and in control. Though the process could involve confronting difficult memories. If you were to pursue a form of therapy like this, definitely take it slow.
Questioning the nature of reality can be a valuable experience, but although psychedelics open the veil into the world behind the world, rest assured that the material world is still quite real. When you're lost, let it be your anchor.

I tried 10g of mushrooms once and it truly did change me as a person. It made me see the world differently and see people differently. I used to be a very hateful person and while that's still in me both that experience and my own work in bettering myself has definitely tempered that anger and given me ways of dealing with it.
Not gonna give a full trip report but I'll say there was almost no visible changes aside from blurred vision. It was more mental and emotional. Another factor that I think helped me face the anger I had was VR. I've always been an enthusiast and one of my favorite games is a VR title called Blade and Sorcery. It's pretty much a medieval knight simulator where you're very op. Well I was about six hours in and in my underwear and decided it would be great to hop into that. ... yeah.. I know.
Anyway I enjoyed myself a lot. Like to a mad extent. I honestly felt a bit insane for the following 20-30 mins. I was just hacking people up and doing horrible things to these poor NPCs. Then at one moment it just clicked how angry I was and how much that was just rolling over on itself, churning up.
I still play that game and I enjoy it. Great stress relief but I realized how much real damage my anger had caused throughout my life. I'd been hacking and brutalizing(not physically) the people in my life for so long. I didn't like that so I worked to change it.

But the most scary thought of all is that we ARE still having any kind of experience under general anesthesia. How do you know we are not experiencing extreme unimaginable pain but the paralytic and amnesiac drugs the anesthesiologist administers prevent us from screaming and remembering the experience, respectively? Terrifyingly there is evidence that this has sometimes been the case, and it seems like the biggest nightmare you could even imagine.

I underwent general anesthesia in my youth and have been suffering from severe mental health problems that started shortly after. So I often wonder if I had this experience of "being awake" during the long operation and feeling that kind of pain but unable to move or tell anyone, and that it's that experience that sent me down this road.

I personally loved anesthesia. I don't know the specifics other than it was injected, but it was when I was getting three wisdom teeth and one molar pulled out. I enjoyed it because it removed a lot of pain most importantly, but also because it did seem similar to an in-between state like I would experience on a microdose (0.5g) of magic mushrooms. Therefore, I felt as if I was in control the whole time. I remember being knocked out seconds after they put the thing in my jaw to keep my mouth open. Then I woke up in a different room, I remember that my eyes were closed and I heard my mother's voice asking if I was awake. I immediately said I was awake, but I didn't open my eyes until I got upright and it was like waking up from a dream so I was perfectly calm. I honestly don't know how they got me into the room. I then remember getting into the car and we stopped at a gas station. I saw a vape store nearby (I don't recommend doing this) and went inside, gauss still in my mouth and still feeling the anesthesia/nerve blockers. I bought a vape and was on my way, acting like I normally would in public. I avoided smoking as much as possible as to avoid dry socket, which I did. It was an interesting experience to say the least, one of the rare moments where my thoughts are quiet and I can think whatever I want.

My first surgery was like time travel. Blockage caused by an umbilical hernia. Nobody told me to count down. Nobody told me to do anything. They put a mask on my face and said it was oxygen. One second I was on the operating table looking up at the lights and the very next second I was being rolled out of recovery 5 hours later. I don't even remember closing my eyes. My second surgery I wanted to see how long I could fight it. I stayed awake until I lost feeling everywhere except my head. Looking back I think I was paralyzed at that point. I don't know. I didn't try to move. It felt like my head had detached from my body and was floating in a pool of water or maybe just floating in air. I got scared then and shut my eyes. Woke up 3 hours later still in the operating room and hurting really bad. They took my back to my room and I slept for the next 8 hours.

About 20 years ago, I went to a dentist (as a referral) for a root canal. The only form of anesthesia she used was gas. I was anxious so while they were administering it, I started doing Lamaze. My eyes were closed. I had seen a little squirrel outside the dentist’s window and I willed myself to be outside with that squirrel when suddenly either the dentist, or the anesthesiologist, exclaimed, abort, abort!! They woke me up and denied that I’d had gas, tried to get me to leave, and would not let me take a business card or pay a bill. I told them I was in no shape to drive I needed to be picked up. They would not let me sit with the other patients. To this day, I’d like to know what caused them to say abort. What did they see? Was it my blood pressure dropping? Was I having a near death experience and leaving my body? I would love to know from a anesthesiologist what could’ve happened and why. Thank you very much if you would care to comment.

Ever so slightly less than what is required for the individual and it may not complelety shut off the part of your brain that allows you to dream.

The ones that no matter the fact that they tell their anesthesiologist before these procedures that they wake during them and are told ok I'll make sure that won't happen to you this time. Then the patient wakes during and has to be put back out. What is causing them to not stay under long enough? Different drugs given to stay under, also given enough they say to knock a elephant out. Is it that they metabolize the medication other system faster than others and if so why isn't it put on their medical history? Or at least tested to find out why?

They didn't tell me the Stealth Neuronavigation was stuffed because of a faulty update, this was worldwide, the surgeon went back to Belgium a couple weeks later & I have a new surgeon, the lesion is now 8cm, I wish I had headaches to make me want to get it outm I hope my anesthetist looks after me, I am petrified,

I'm sorry for what you've gone through, and I am hoping that your new surgeon and anesthesiologist will give you the care and respect that you deserve 🙏 I hope that the knowledge you gain from this channel helps you feel empowered to advocate for yourself

@@MedicalSecrets - Thank you, I think my surgeon feels very sorry for what I have endured, he is a Professor so hopefully that says something, he knew about my case through a mutual friend/colleague, of course never discussed openly, but in her opinion of all the Neurosurgeons she has worked with he is the best & he didn't hesitate to take me on. Thank you for your kind words, kind regards Australia.
PS: I am interested if you have ever done a video on Near Death Experiences. Only 5 months prior to surgery I suffered true anaphylaxis to Gadolinium, 5 drs & 2 paramedics worked on me, intubation & finding a vein difficult because of swelling, it was the IO in my shin that saved me & then put into induced coma due to AKI & plenty of other stuff not working. I will certainly drop you a line if I come through ok, after this, I have certainly been lucky surviving all I went through.
I had to lose a bit more weight because of the Mayfield Clamp & pressure on my neck, my surgeon said he wanted me the fittest I could be mentally & physically. I have now lost the 5kg, so not long to go. I get paranoid with the drugs because of anaphylaxis, all the anesthetists say, I am in the best place I could be should I ever react do any of the drugs, I hope that is true. Thank you once again & apologies for the long msg.

Yeah uhhhhh you could literally ask the same weird question about dreaming but ok. I was out cold when they put me under--I SORT of thought that was kinda the point of anesthesia...

I have a naturally curious desire to see how long I can fight the anesthesia until I’m out 😂

Why is it that it's deemed necessary to take away patients' memories from surgery? I've never understood that. As someone who has been drugged and assaulted, the concept of being drugged so I won't remember and have no control is so scary, and obviously I understand surgery isn't the same thing, but do our bodies really know the difference? What happens during surgery that's necessary to hide or erase from patients' minds?

I woke once immediately after surgery and was crying re saving a dog. The anesthetist asked what I had been watching before coming down and I said natgeo re saving dogs. She told me to go back to sleep😂

What? Auto pilot is "ego"? You flipped the meaning experienced... Maybe it's just the "term"... But .... I'm really trying understanding but... Our meaning of auto pilot is not the same... Actually quite opposite.
Will you be going beyond the medicated..experience?

Has anyone ever woken up from temporary death and said they saw Jesus? I watch a lot of NDE videos and am just wondering if you ever saw someone who popped their eyes open and claim they saw heaven.
