When we don't know what we're feeling, we tend to be reactive and impulsive in ways that mess up our life. When our emotions are vague, nebulous, unexplored sensations - when we feel something, but we don’t know what it is or we aren’t sure where it comes from - we have little power to change it. You can learn how to manage emotions by learning how to talk about them. The simple skill of "Name it to Tame it" as Daniel Siegal calls it.
In this video, the first of 30 skills in my Emotion Processing course, you’re going to learn how to get better at feeling by getting better at naming your emotions.

    About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

Very much the same here.Thank you and kindly grateful to the access to understand my emotions better and that of my 9 year old daughter's who has ODD, Autism and social anxiety. It can be a very complicated relationship of control and manipulation, you are a great starting point to learn my own emotional processes so am better equipped to deal with her anger and frustrations. Congratulations on the birth of your super new edition. PS. Ginni I am moving from the UK to NZ very soon, happy living X

I eat. ( stuffing down emotions)
    Sleep. ( avoiding difficult emotions)
I pick an argument. ( reinforcing the feeling of isolation and unworthiness)
I isolate. ( not wanting to burden others or not being able to trust that I can receive help)
I numb out by dissociating or engaging in mindless social media scrolling)
I ignore/avoid pleasurable activities. ( maladaptively managing anxiety, boredom, shame, loneliness, sadness, fear - feelings of unworthiness)
Thank you so much for this.

This needs to be added to most curriculums at school. I don't understand why this is not being taught. We need to put much more emphasis on physical health at school as well as emotional health. This is a wonderful course. Thank you for posting it. I am going through it with all the effort and and diligence I have.

I've had basic psychology at least three times (different schools and education levels), none of them taught this. There were only a couple of interesting useful topics, like conflict resolution. The rest was personality tests and group tasks/games. Felt more like team building or maybe training interpersonal skills.
And regarding physical health I have no idea why first aid and proper nutrition still isn't being taught in schools. My 26 year old friend though pizza is a healthy meal :D

Naming my buzzing emotions was so hard. I could only describe it as a stuffy humid windless doldrums. After a few weeks shuffling through an emotion wheel I realised why it was so hard, it was because I grew up in a house hold where any emotion or uncooperative behaviour was just called "a bad/garbage attitude" or "what would your future mother in law/husband think about this behavior."

I was married to a man who wasn’t very emotional and early in the relationship would get upset when I cried, so I learned not to. We were married for 13 years. Two years ago I divorced him because I met someone who made me feel again. The last two years has been an emotional roller coaster as I have let all those feeling finally come back out with a wonderful man by my side who embraces my “seasons” of emotions (as he calls them).

I struggle mainly with intense intrusive, irrational feelings of guilt, especially towards the people I love. I tend to ruminate and obsess over those feelings and associated thoughts (that I'm a bad, selfish person) and this leads to feelings of anxiety, hopelessness, sadness, despair... I'm working on forgiving and accepting myself the way I am, but it is quite hard given the fact I've been criticising, judging and hating myself for as long as I can remember.

What an awesome thing to think about - I processed stress when I had a high paying job by skipping dinner and going straight to bed until the next day and when it was time to work. It got worse and worse because I didn’t have time and energy to make good, nutritious meals for myself and wanted to save money and didn’t want to eat out. Hope this comment helps you conquer the algorithm.

A few decades ago I hit upon the thought exercise of removing emotional triggers from a "coat closet", shaking the "coat on a hanger" out to see if that was why I was anxious, angry or sad because I often feel emotions without knowing what triggered it. If that wasn't the one, I put it back and pulled out another. It works fairly well. I usually know what I'm feeling it the why and what to do with it that stumps me.

First week in I downloaded an app called Daylio to track how I feel every 3 hours from 9am till 9pm. I feel like using an app is more handy than having to take physical notes during the day. So after checking in with my emotions during this week was challenging at times, but I felt amazing benefits already after 2 days. I felt more grounded and self confident because identifying and naming the emotions kept me from ignoring them, numbing or getting stuck in my head. Also I was finding myself being more present and happy. If you would have told me a week ago how different I would feel now from something as simple as naming my emotions, I would have dismissed the idea as foolish. So now I am rlly looking forward to the following weeks!

    Better late than never:
    1. I sit at my computer and play a game or turn on the tv. (Ignoring the emotions)
This bottles the emotions and teaches my brain that as long as i dont feel them now, its fine.
Also, your videos have been a lifeline for me. Ive been struggling with feelings of anxiety for about 2 weeks now (2 years ago it was 4-6 months). Youre videos and guides have helped me find that i have made alot of unconcious habits to avoiding my emotions and feelings of self-dislike (i felt hate was too strong of a word). Though your videos can not fully replace an actual theorpist, it is definenetly a step out of this dark loop. Thanks you from the bottom of my heart.❤

I'm hoping through your videos to finally figure out a way to acknowledge stress panic and depression and find a way to cope with it.
Thank you again for helping so many people you're a blessing.🥰

Thank you very much for all these videos. These are hard times in the world and I feel I’m more fragile and need to work on myself to get in a better mindset. People around me (home and work) are not their usual self and emotions are running high. The world needs more people like you. I’m from 🇨🇦

I tend to think that thoughts are emotions even though I am aware of the fact that they are not. I was aware for quite some time that I am rationalizing my emotions but only now do I feel like I actually understood how to name emotions properly. Only just starting with this, I feel like going to therapy hasn’t had enough “practical” things I can do like this video taught me. Wish me luck and I wish all of you luck and positive changes as well ❤

Makes perfect sense. I stumbled upon a video featuring a guy who was going through the same thing as I am, and I immediately felt `OK, thank god I'm not the only one going through this....' Knowing or hearing of others experiencing what you are can be `reassuring' in a manner of speaking...

I honestly just got benefit from watching your videos this morning. I Was stuck in anger, sadness, regret about my childhood, but I realize some treatment is generational and not intended. Thank you for everything, you are a lovely lovely person. You remind me of my daughter. By the way, I could not teach my children how to process their emotions because I never learned exactly, but I always allowed my children to be themselves, and I honored their existence. Thank you for everything.

Emma, your videos have been such a incredible help for me. Coming back to working as a psychologist/therapist after 20 years of working as a lawyer/in the corporate world... I felt out of depth working with clients again. Your videos have been such a help in both upskilling myself, giving me so many tools to use with my clients, as well as being able to explain concepts to clients. So thank you so much for sharing so generously 🙏❤️

You worked as lawyer for 20 years and become psychologist, you inspired me, because I am a practicing lawyer, I don't like my job, studying law was interesting but when come to practice it doesn't suits me. So after watching her vedio , I am interested in psychology and wanted to help people who are suffering. I am interested in becoming a therapist.

@@nima4719 one of my reasons was after reading The Tools by Phil Stutz and Barry Michels. In the book barry talks about how he was also a pretty successful lawyer and then he came to a place in his life where he was looking for significance, and he decided to go back to school to become a therapist. And how his life changed as a result of it.

This is so true! When I felt moody, sensitive, annoyed by the world, then looked at the calendar and realized, "oh! It's PMS. Okay. No big deal." It didn't change how I felt, but it changed the things I said to myself about it! And the things I chose to do--because rather than pushing it down or taking it out on anyone, I chose things to support myself in those circumstances. :-)

In the past I'd resort to drinking to deal with my emotions and pain and it got me an addiction to alcohol. I am now two years sober, with the help of professionals. I have learned a lot about myself and how I respond to what I feel, but I am not there yet, I still have a lot to learn. I still tend to escape and avoid. Today I stumbled upon these video's of 'How to process your emotions' and I just want to say thank you!! I will be resorting to this and journaling to help me in my journey.
