  • Samurai Champloo is considered to be the spiritual successor to Cowboy Bebop, you know, that anime about the space cowboys and jazz. Well, Samurai Champloo is the one about Japanese hobos and hiphop. It’s really good and this is my analysis.

The music played during all of the God Hand fights were different for every different scene, more due to the characters in it. Reflecting the fighting style and the pace of the combat. Jin's first losing fight was also smoother than when he was fighting alongside Mugen, leaving out that chaotic nature that Mugen brings to it. Then there's the final bout where he WINS against God Hand, and it's entirely smooth, with the drums much slower and the song entirely devoid of discord in it. It's because he already arrived with a plan and strategy in mind, and the fight WAS going to go his way, because he knew the opening he'd leave for God Hand to take would draw him into the strike that would end his life. It's extremely well put together and planned.

This show is about the constant ending of important human relationships. People die, people grow different and take differing paths. THAT is why i connect with this series more than even Bebop, I have always struggled with what i feel is a premature ending to a relationship or friendship via death or just going own ways. Theres also that people are selfish and do kind of awful things either not taking another into account or simply not caring. Which i honor my family, my friends and my lady. I won't abandon, i won't lie, i won't cheat, which is... an awful world having those principles, few honor loyalty, honesty, integrity, dignity and love.
    What can you do?
Watch Champloo, and study Miyamotō Musashi's Dokkōdō/The Way Of The Path Of Solitude.

I'm with you there. It's hard having principles in our clown world. I also connected with this series more than BeBop because of its themes.
I also have struggles maintaining quality friendships, as most people just seem to be out for themselves. Which is the opposite of how I carry myself.
You're not alone. ☺️ And thanks for watching!

@TheSelfCenter no, thank you for a heartfelt response. I know I'm not totally alone but finding them us difficult especially in internet world. People love to project an image but rarely exercise and apply said image, and that's the tragedy. Ever go out on a date these days? ½ the date you must communicate with them via phone, I'm not doing that. To apply Musashi's Dokkōdō, I'd rather hunt for fulfillment in solitude than waste my time with people like that. I don't feel what I seek in unreasonable: a woman we can absolutely trust eachother, monogamous, the ideal of sharing a life perhaps creating a life and go into older age with the ideal that we got eachother. As I did with my grandma with bad hips, I'll bathe her, cook and feed her if need me, help in the bathroom and just spend time with one another. Wrong era, wrong place for that. So as that stands I walk the path of mostly solitude my immediate family and few friends aside. If some lovely lady comes my way that shares this, I'll act, but I've long since given up on that ever happening. Instead of feeling blue about it, I walk the path of solitude applying what I can from Miyamotō Musashi-Sama's 21 Principles of fulfillment in solitude. Life can always be better, but it certainly can and has been much worse. That's what I must remember while applying these principles.
You seem pretty neat from here, good video. Always nice to cross paths with someone who loved Champloo however I'm a Japanese dub man myself.

Jin and Mugen stay with Fuu because they are Samurai, servants. They are bound to Fuus' service until she releases them from their obligations. Yes, one is an ashamed Ronin, the other is a vagabond pirate, but they have agreed to be Fuus' Samurai.

great video!! ive never seen anyone talk about the inclusion of black characters in the show and i learned a lot lol. i feel like the discussion usually just stops at the hip hop elements and soundtrack (which are incredible) but i really like how you went in depth. i hope this anime has a revival soon and more people start watching it! it would also be amazing if they had the soundtrack on spotify w/o region lock lol

I love Samurai Champloo, watched it in July 2023 and it was simply amazing. My Favorite episode is episode 11, just loved the dynamic between Jin and the girl. At the beginning of that Episode she was about to kill herself, in the End she had her freedom back and probably a great future with Jin:D

I'll say a difference of Mugen:
Mugen takes personal responsibility and cognitively forges his own path. He doesn't let anyone or anything decide his path if he's not deciding it.

I love this show more, the more I look back on it. Even the things I didn't like at first such as all the different tones, the episodic structure or some anticlimactic endings.
Anime from the 00s really had a unique feel that I'm very fond of. Granted, I was a massive, capital W weeb back then but I do believe it was a decade that produced some awesome stuff that's still well worth checking out such as Haibane Renmei, Eureka Seven, Kino's Journey and Sword of the Stranger.
As for your video: while you were discussing the show's depiction of black people I thought "Good point, and it's got some pretty good representation of gay people too such as the Dutchman and the old man in episode 2" so you can't imagine how glad I was when that was the very next thing you brought up. Your observations about the way the show depicts life as unpredictable an all too brief were great as well.
Wonderful video that was well worth the wait.
