3 BIG Ideas 1). Procrastinations Happen when our negative emotions outweigh our positive emotions related to the task. There is a genetic component to procrastination. Humans have evolved to act in short term, to flee from predators, find food & reproduce putting off things that are non-urgent, plus they weren't even sure if they would survive to even get it. When our frontal lobe got evolved we started separating ourselves from other animals in terms of planning and reflecting. Our obsession with what would happen in the past and what would happen in the future lives us paralyzed to take action in the present. Thinking only about all the negative outcomes, leads us to self-sabotage. So, how do we get out of these negative emotions and move toward positive emotions? Dale Carnegie in the book, how to stop worrying and start living recommends focusing on One day at a time and focusing on the present but as we all know sometimes its impossible, not to think about the future. So, if we are gonna think about the future we must try to at least attach positive emotions to it. One way to attach positive emotions to the future is to stop thinking about ourselves so much and think about the greater good and how could we benefit other people. Eg, like if you were to cure cancer or make some portal technology, then give it all you got for the sake of all humanity don't procrastinate. Keep a piece of paper when we work, so when whenever we are having negative thoughts, we can offload them on the piece of paper, so we free our brain. It is also a great way to gain insight on what type of negative thoughts or experiences we are having. Insight is the first step towards personal change. Another commonly overlooked negative emotion that leads to procrastination is boredom, unfortunately in this day and age of smartphones, we have been made experts in escaping boredom, because of how quickly & easily we can get a dopamine hit. Instead of instinctively using smartphones and social media Apps, do meditation for your mind to be okay with boredom. Over time you will procrastinate less on our projects and side hustles. 2. Too much friction - Procrastination happens when there is too much friction in getting started. An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion until and unless an external force is applied. If we can find enough momentum to get the ball rolling, it's easier to keep going. Popular belief is that we think that we're supposed to be motivated before doing something. We think that motivation initiates action, Jeff Hyden the author of the motivation myth argues that its the other way around. Instead, it's taking action that creates motivation. when we see progress, then we are motivated to keep going. Its normal to be skeptical at first about this idea at first, because how do we take action when we aren't motivated like that's the whole problem in the first place, but then he points out that we take action all the time like brushing our teeth or taking the shower so this the basis of Mark Manson's do something principle. JUST DO SOMETHING. We can extract motivation from accomplishing small mundane tasks. For example in a morning routine, we can physically make ourselves move for bigger tasks leading to a snowball effect gaining momentum. So, a lot of books offer rules to begin momentum. The Rules are 1. 5 min Rule 2. 2 sec. rule 3. 2 day Rule All these rules point towards only one thing, we have to break big tasks into small manageable tasks either physically or mentally. But the rules by James Clear are the best which are 1. 2 mins. rule or 2. The 2-day Rule 2 min rule is that we take whatever task we want and then scale it down to 2 mins. or less. Going for a daily jog becomes on your shoes every day or reading an entire book every month is just reading a single page every day. So, we keep the ball rolling for 2 min. rule and then we keep the ball rolling with the 2-day rule. We should never allow ourselves to procrastinate for 2 days in a row because that will essentially kill our streak. Breaking the streak for 2 consecutive days is the start of our new procrastination habit or another bad habit. So, the 2 min rule lowers friction so we start taking the smallest tiniest action and we do something and then that action leads to motivation and momentum to overcome procrastination. 3. No Planning - Procrastination is the result of Poor Planning. When we fail to plan, we plan to procrastinate. We want to be a UA-camr, Businessperson, drop shipper, writer and so many other things, crypto investor, all these XYZ ambitions that are much more than we have the ability to even handle, so what usually ends up happening is that we just procrastinate on wither one or all of them. The problem here is that we are often too obsessed with ambition and the end results when we should pay more attention to the process that gets us there. So, instead of obsessing over the GOAL of setting the curve on every exam, we should focus on the process, work on improving our study skills, and find enjoyment in learning. Dan Gilbert author of stumbling unhappiness, says that our desire to control the outcomes leads to suffering because as much as we hate to accept the reality we don't have much control over anything except our own experiences of life, so this idea combines with our first idea of negative emotions to send us far down the hole of procrastination. A better way of thinking about GOALS comes from James Clear who states that GOALS are just temporary. If our goal is to clean our room, and we manage to clean it, who's to stay it won't get dirty again next week, if we focus on the process, building de-clutter habits, or becoming a type of person who strives for organization all the time, then our room will always be clean, so instead of focussing on the GOAL of a clean room, we should focus on what we can control, which is identifying ourselves as a clean person. SO, we procrastinate because the GOAL is too daunting, but we also procrastinate because we fail to prioritize the individual task that leads up to that GOAL Dr. Jason Selk says that the 3 most important tasks, author of organizing tomorrow today suggest the 3 in 1 rule. He suggests that the 3 most important tasks that we want to do tomorrow should be planned today. And we want to do those tasks tomorrow preferably in the morning before we get bombarded by the rest of the hectic day. He also recommends that we do that planning at lunchtime during the day when we are not yet tired and then we put a star next to that one important thing that needs to be done tomorrow, So we can combine this with the one Hour. rule by Oliver Berkman, author of 4000 weeks...He suggests spending the first hour of the day on the most important thing to you, so give the first hour of the day to yourself instead of giving it to your employer or to your other obligations. So, if your GOAL is to make it to the basketball team but we don't make time to practice every day, that dream will never come true, so give yourself the first hour of the day to practice basketball. It doesn't even have to be an hour. It can be just 30 mins.

I have watched content from 100 youtubers who each read 100 procrastination books to learn these 2 lessons about procrastination... I don't really care about "cajun clubs" but I can say that the first problem - negative self talk - really can be fixed by identifying yourself as a x or y person. A lot of negative self talk comes from telling yourself you are worthless rather than telling yourself that you are e.g. a clean and organized person. It's called learned helplessness and it causes you to give up before you've even started trying. It's debilitating to be like this but it honestly makes no sense when you think about it and doesn't have to be this way. You don't have to listen to the voice in your head, you have the agency to control your destiny and decide what kind of person and what kind of life you want to live. If you struggle with this a good solution is to surround yourself with encouraging people who won't criticize you for making mistakes in life. And then when it comes to actually doing the hard work, the most important thing I've found is that you really should break big tasks down into smaller ones. It's hard for your dopaminergic brain to wrap its head around long term goals, but you can keep up the momentum that dopamine creates by continually breaking tasks down into their smallest components. Like e.g. it really helps you go for a run when you just start with: 1) putting on your shoes, then 2) opening the door to go outside, 3) turning on your stopwatch and then 4) actually picking a direction you want to go in, and 5) how fast you want to go, etc, etc. Motivation comes naturally when you think like that. Another word for this is the Zeigarnik Effect, and it is the very thing that allows you to get into the zone. Dopamine is your friend not your enemy. You are not broken.

And then when it comes to actually doing the hard work, the most important thing I've found is that you really should break big tasks down into smaller ones. It's hard for your dopaminergic brain to wrap its head around long term goals, but you can keep up the momentum that dopamine creates by continually breaking tasks down into their smallest components. Like e.g. it really helps you go for a run when you just start with: 1) putting on your shoes, then 2) opening the door to go outside, 3) turning on your stopwatch and then 4) actually picking a direction you want to go in, and 5) how fast you want to go, etc, etc. Motivation comes naturally when you think like that. Another word for this is the Zeigarnik Effect, and it is the very thing that allows you to get into the zone. Dopamine is your friend not your enemy. You are not broken.
