Ye true, the skill to make that kind of glass hasnt disappeared anywhere....ofc the colors might not be exactly the same as they were in old ones, but trough the pictures they would able to create very accurate new glass. Also its good to see that the firecrew was able to limit the fire inside so that when the burning roof collapsed, it didnt cause more damage aside from smoke and water to the interior of the building. Hard to say what the actual cost of this might be and how long it takes to rebuild, but I would say that the worst estimates from 1 billion and many decades might be avoided here. It quite honestly seems that the damage was largely limited to the roof itself.

I’ve restored three pipe organs that survived church fires. In consideration of the damage I’m seeing to the interior of the Cathedral, Im confident the only damage to the Cavaille Coll organ will be smoke and suet but every square millimeter of exposed surface throughout the organ will need to be cleaned. Pipe organs are normally rebuilt and refurbished once or twice a century and much old, absorbent material like leather and felt is replaced with new leather and felt. It’ll be time for that at the very least. Any notion that organ building “is a lost art” should be immediately dismissed. At no time in the past 500 years have organ builders not been producing pipe organs and passing on their knowledge to the next generation.

I went to France about a year and a half ago, although I didn’t get to go inside the cathedral, I got to admire it from the outside. Notre Dame Cathedral is beautiful in photographs (it is beautiful in general, obviously) but to see it in person is something I feel I can’t put into words. It was just so large and intricate it seemed so majestic. The hotel I stayed at was a mere 10 minutes away from Notre Dame, I could have walked to it if I wanted to. Although this event is tragic, I will admit that the photos taken from the inside didn’t make the interior damage look too bad. This cathedral has stood in France for almost 1,000 years, it has stood tall through many tragedies. It has been on this planet for so so long, thousands of minutes and hours, and yet it was nearly destroyed in a few hours. I find it interesting how something can survive somewhere for so long, but get torn down quickly. This is horrific and I hope Notre Dame is restored to greatness.
My sister was visiting Paris when this happened. She had just went to the Cathedral an hour before it burned and she watched history from a next door shop. So crazy!!

No, science is magnificent. Gold has a melting point of 1064 °C and a wood fire bruns at around 600 °C , so it‘s actually pretty logical that the cross is in a much better condition than the rest of the cathedral that got affected by the fire
@@ming8347 While Science is Magnificent as well, it was a gift from God. God gave us the brains to develop things using Science. All sorts of things. Your argument however unfortunately doesn't hold much weight. I say that because the Cross I was speaking of, is actually a Gold Plated Cross. Much thinner density than a solid gold Cross. This could mean that they might create some hideous abomination resembling that of the London Shard, a modern architects false and warped idea of beauty if you will. We should NOT let this happen!
Tim Slee what’s the point of ruining the spire? It benefits no one. They will obviously rebuild the spire to look exactly the same as the old one but use “new techniques” and structural reinforcement that makes it more structurally sound. Don’t worry if you’re walking by it will look exactly the same as the old one. This new version will just last another 1000 years.
There’s actually a lot of discussion around this happening here in France. I think most people want to see it rebuilt as close to the original as possible but I think politicians might hope for a newer take on the spire for glory’s sake. I personally love the modern glass pyramid at the louvre but I would hate to see a modern spire in the middle of this monument of gothic art. Now we have modern machines and equipment and assuming we utilize our modern technology to rebuild the cathedral I would say it should be finished within a decade. Also the amount of donations. With the Estimated total cost of the rebuilding of the cathedral being less than 10 million, we have already brought in hundreds of millions. With this money and funding for the rebuilding of the cathedral as well as probably many architects working on it I wouldn’t see the cathedral taking hundreds of years to rebuild. Well luckily most of the damage was just limited to roof itself and as it collapsed it didnt do too much damage it seems and the firecrew was able to very effectively limit the damage/speard of fire.... From what Ive understood when it comes to all the paintings and art inside the cathedral most of the damage done is from smoke so luckily it seems that nothing inside really burned, but whatever damage was done in there was mainly from smoke and water. So lets see exactly how much money it requires to rebuild the roof/ceiling and ofc how much money and time all restoration. Ofc its hard to say without knowing full details, but from the looks of it, we luckily arent talking about many decades and alteast 1 billion like the worst estimates were, but I would still say that the 5 years that Marcon suggested might be bit too optimistic....tbh as long as the roof looks the same from outside and as long as the ceiling would look the same from inside, I dont think they really have to make the inside structure of the roof be exactly as it was from wood, cause I mean no-one is going to see that part of the roof anyway.....they could easily make that of less flammable material/whatever the rest of the building would allow them to do in that regard.
I don't think we have the same reverence for Jesus Christ in our society anymore today to rebuild it with the same heart & soul that went in to it in the past. Sure, we can rebuild and make it look nice, but will the Reverence & Awe be the same as it was in the past!

Mr NixxxoN the wood still have to stay for religious and beliefs reasons as well as value in architecture and beauty and also historical reasons
@@littlenightk how exactly is that? construction materials have nothing to do with religion. In fact most cathedrals are entirely built on stone and have no wood
Mr NixxxoN I might be wrong on the the hold religion thing as I'm not religious myself but the cathedral was built with wood so rebuilding it with the exact same wood if they could find it and I do know that it won't have the same age but that way they could at least preserve a part of how the cathedral originally was look like and kinda "feel" like preserving a part of history (I use quotes because I can't think of a better way to explain) I'm not sure about other countries such as France but in my country restoration is usually using the same materials and in my country wood in shrine or temples does serve a religious reason PS: I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say I do hope that you would understand that I'm not French so my argument could be very wrong

Looks like a lot of stained glass survived, thank God. That's the most beautiful part.
Jim Mooney And what glass didn't survive, they have enough up close photos, that a top notch historic restorator could recreate it.

Thank God the organ wasn't too badly damaged

I still cannot believe this happened. I visited Notre Dame 12 days before the fire. So sad this happened.
good thing about stone is it doesn't burn
but it get superheated like the old bread ovens, it could have ignited the rest by heat
broomstone does
those roof beams surely will burn well. They are lucky they contained the fire like they did, said was four hundred firemen!
The shit still cracks and losses integrity.
The stone is supported by wood.
doesn't look too bad.
it will be back in no time
Churches like these take hundreds of years to construct. Just take a look at the Cathedral in Barcelona.
@@KermisVoyager1997 They TOOK hundreds of years, back when they didn't have the construction and logistical capacity of an industrial society. I think it'll be fully repaired within 5 years, considering how important it is culturally as well as a tourist attraction.
I believe they said 10-15 years due to how good they have to get it. It can't look that new
KermisVoyager1997 keep in mind we have modern technology. Back then I would have possibly taken up to 200 years, probably less. Sorry for a long answer to your statement I just don’t think it would take hundreds of years now in modern society
THAT CROSS...in the middle just standing there that did not burn is so cool to me. Such a beacon of hope. Happy Easter
I don't think we have the same reverence for Jesus Christ in our society anymore today to rebuild it with the same heart & soul that went in to it in the past. Sure, we can rebuild and make it look nice, but will the Reverence & Awe be the same as it was in the past!
I wish people would build their hearts with bricks, stones and wood of love...people are what's important...I try EVERYDAY to treat people kindly.
smytb You are correct! The bad vibes from today's world will be built into it. It was a labor of love in that time period.
@@cayugafeather7772 Seriously? It was built during the Dark middle age and I can't even imagine how many lives building it took. Poor people working with the time period's wage if there even was any. All the while the Catholic church was burning witches and forcing people to convert to christianity. The Inquisition torturing and killing people for "heresy". But yea. A lovely project conducted by lovely organization.
-_-
If anything novadays the project will gain more love than it ever would have. I mean, it got millions in donations while the church was still burning.
Lol it was built by enslaved people. And those that owed debts
People used jesus christ a committing crime I s jesus way ??? Is thed jesus's telling to France to build slave labour to build church? Every building build whit slave labour must burned to ground and never be rebuild under same name .
I loved how the burning in flame thed church build whit a slave labour you dont served to God whit slave labour and stolen natural resources from other countries French ripped off entire afrika Algeria many other countries the ripped off I don't care if the everyone in France will go to hell or entire France will burned whit flame God willing it might happened some day amen amen amen
For the love of God don't change the design, PLEASE!
Keep it the same as it was.
They can't keep it the same, some things they used to build certain parts were irreplaceable or now hard to get/find. Like giant oak trees, for example.
This building is over 800 years old, it took 200 years to build... It has survived so many wars, 1 fire and...
It's done well after 800 years... survived the 2nd world war. But Paris wasn't Bombed.... Amazing Beautiful Building...
"you have to see what is original and what is new" I think everything should look just as it was. It's a landmark exactly how it was and it's not something to play around with. Is it not historic? No. It is historic. It's the historic repair from the 2019 fire which will be talked about thousands of years from now.
Puts a smile on my face. I mean the cathedral was a part of my childhood and now its destroyed😢. But that's now history, Just imagine that in several years from now this event will be written in our history books. Thus, with the technology of today this monument will be repaired in a low ammount of time. Also the Kids in 20 years from now will believe with difficulty that this fire happened at all.

@@Rosie05610 i avoid as much sins as possible and i believe in God. When i said it puts a smile on my face, i didnt mean it. All i meant was that thats a historic momentum. And that after the restoration is completed i will have to teach something to my Kids in the future
Seems that someone took the Hellfire karaoke song from Hunchback of Notre-Dame too seriously
LIKE FIRE, HELLFIRE, IS BLAZING THROUGH MY SKIN
She will be mine or she...will...BUUUUUURN! Super bummed about the beautiful cathedral, but my mind went to this song as well when I first heard about it.
Our Lady protected Her Cathedral this Holy Week.
It Burned.....
Athiest here but so glad that the structure is still ok and inside is better than expected.
Notre Dame will rise again but it will take some time.
That's Kool such a positive kind thing ....bless your heart friend🤗
'Notre Damn' hahahaha
It breaks my heart. I was hoping from deep inside that nothing is lost but...
It looks beautiful either way.
Thank God I see that it is just partially damaged, a prayer answered.
Gabrielle Beatrice Ross god isn’t real
It’s so horrible what happened. I wish that this didn’t happen. At least no one got hurt and it wasn’t completely destroyed.
God bless that church 🙏🙏
