  • Debra Searle is a renowned British adventurer, author and TV presenter. The media worldwide went crazy for the story of the 5ft 5″ young lady who carried on rowing the Atlantic solo when her husband, an experienced oarsman, left the boat after developing an uncontrollable fear of the ocean. Yet, she dared to believe and 111 days later she rowed into Port St Charles, Barbados, to a rapturous welcome. Debra, who was loving life at sea in a 23 foot plywood boat, saw no reason to stop and rowed on to become the youngest and only the third woman in the world to have rowed an ocean solo.
Debra Searle is also an extremely successful businesswoman and became Managing Director of her first company at the age of 23 and today manages to combine business with her life-long ambition to be a professional adventurer. Other adventures have included sailing around Antarctica, the longest canoe race in the world, L'Etape du Tour, and setting a new world record for crossing the channel. Debra is the author of two books and is a regular presenter for the BBC with credits including Grandstand and Extreme Lives.

I discovered the exact same thing on my own, just recently.. and i keep asking myself: "why did it take me so long to acknowledge this fact??!" Choosing the right attitude IS of a 'life vs death' importance! Felt 'dead inside' my whole life.. if I was only smart enough to know I had the POWER the whole time to CHOOSE to be happy! Whoever said solution to most(all) of our sufferings is almost always simple (&in our power)...

"...her tiny craft dwarfed by the threatening sea..." Well done Debra, for doing it for the team, myself included! I am with you, 100% - What really tides us over in the face of these over-bearing storms in our seas is indeed the ATTITUDE we choose. As we sail on, may negative attitudes be "banned from the boat", even when our craft is dwarfed by all manner of threats!

Debra Searle is the world's premiere inspirational speaker, and she has charmed and motivated audiences around the world. Hers is a story of character, endurance, intellect and sheer determination to succeed....by choosing the right attitude. I "steal" from her regularly. I hope I get to see her speak again soon, I've never heard better.

To say you are inspirational is still not an adequate enough word to describe you Debra, your achievement and your talk here on TEDx is amazing! Thankyou so much. Jane x

    Debs,
I always enjoy the lesson of Choose Your Attitude... seems like every time I hear, read or watch it, I find new or at least renewed understanding. It has been several years since you presented to our team and I so well remember the feedback - especially one lady coming up afterward, in tears, saying what she was going through personally, that your presentation meant the world to her.
    You are an amazing lady.

This was amazing to see in person. I didn't really know her story when I went to TEDxSalford but I left with this as one of the most inspirational talks of the night, and such practical advice! Thanks Debra for sharing x

Thank so much. It doesn’t matter what happens to you in your life; it matters what attitude you adopt. And the attitude you adopt is your choice. I read from book about that

I cried. Choose Your Attitude is familiar to me from FiSH Philosophy, but Debra made me cry, and made me feel like this could be a way of ‘braining’ when you can’t just ‘feel’ an attitude or emotion. Choose triggers to check in with yourself on your choice of attitude. Choose an attitude. List reasons you have for that attitude. Move on. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!
