  • Today I'm changing the automatic transmission fluid in my 2001 Volvo V70. I also show you, step-by-step, how to install a new auxiliary transmission cooler and transmission fluid filter, plus I walk you through removing the bumper cover to gain access on these Volvo V70s.
    Let's get started...
    **NOTE: At the end of the video, I dipped the transmission and reported that it was at the correct level, but the next day I dipped it again after driving 40 miles, and it was a tad high, so I suctioned a tiny amount of fluid out (30ml which is less than an ounce) from the fill tube to bring the level to the correct height. This demonstrates how transmission fluid expands when heated and how it can be difficult to get an exact level. Small additions when low are recommended and if you find the level to be slightly high, suction some back out of the fill tube. I used a coolant hydrometer to pull some fluid out. These are available at any parts store and are the ones with a rubber squeeze-bulb. Best wishes! Everyday Projects**

      Exactly, unless I get A million miles out of this baby, then it’ll be flush time again🗿😵‍💫

      Yes, the self-taught teacher I had was great. He messes up once in a while but I count on him!! LOL Thanks for stopping by, Jason. Be Good!

    I hurry up and hit play because I thought there was some Pepsi Cola being shipped my way!😋 But it's only transmission fluid! You can definitely tell it's not your first RODEO💯👌🏾

    How's she goin'? Well this was a complete and thorough transmission fluid change and the heat exchanger too. Plus you had a great helper. You couldn't have done it with out her!! Glad to see the old Volvo back in tip top shape!! Take 'er easy!!

      My assistant was the key to a successful project 😀without proper instructions, I’m lost. A friend of mine was asked to give an ex employee a reference and he told the new employer that the guy “Worked best under constant supervision!” That’s me😂

    Raining again 😳. Quite a procedure to change fluid. But came good and clean. Burnt fluid at the first bottle. That’s not good. With the extra cooler you would not think it would be burnt like that. Great to get it all out.
    Have a great day.

      This car came to me like this. No idea when the last fluid change was!!! Glad to have it flushed and have a new cooler and filter this time. In just a week, I noticed that the upshifts between gears is much smoother. Yes, rain waits for me to start a project outdoors 🤣😂✅Take care Noel, see you soon.

      Thanks, Nev. I like working on my cars (most of the time) and it is satisfying to keep an older car on the road. This is a 2001. All the best to you!

    Great job, I like the new filter and cooler. Has it improved the operation of the tranmission? We have a garden tractor that uses an inline hydro filter which is no longer available, I wonder if the filter you used would work. We will have to look into it

      It's too early to tell if the complete flush will improve or "Brick" the transmission. Sometimes, when you change old, worn and burnt fluid, the automatic transmission will begin to slip--other times not. It has been said that the old fluid contains wear particles that act as a friction source for worn clutch plates inside the transmission. Some would never change it all at once. Others have done complete flushes (like I did) with success. I guess I'll see what happens. The cooler was a big improvement compared to the old one that, while not leaking, was heavily corroded. The fluid filter should work on just about anything and it seems like good quality. Good luck.

    How many litres do you think had to be sacrificed in order to get everything out of the torque? I'll guess at 6!
    Very thorough Craig👍

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  3 місяці тому

      Well, the transmission holds just under 9 litres so about half of that amount gets sacrificed to get the whole thing flushed. I found this fluid for $9.50 per litre so, about $90 dollars worth of fluid gets pushed out into the bucket! But all is not lost. I mix transmission fluid with rust-proof to undercoat my vehicles so none will actually go to waste. Still, it's good that this flush only happens a few times in the life of a vehicle. I bought this car with the fluid as it was and it was overdue. Have a good one, Marc!

      @@EverydayProjectsGreat job, but why so many liters? Looked like you could have stopped at 7 rounds. How many miles are on your XC70 or did Volvo still call them V70 Cross Country in 01?

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  3 місяці тому +1

      @@thatsonebadhatharry8610 Strange as it is, the amount of fluid required for the flush is just about double the amount the whole transmission holds. I was concerned about using so many litres of new fluid but that's Volvo's recommendation to get everything out of the torque converter.
      Yes, it was running quite clean about the sixth flush but I was on a roll LOL It was probably clean enough after 5 but each two litre removal only gets a percentage of the dirty fluid.
      There is just under 200,000 miles on this car (321,000 kms). Volvo called this car the V70XC AWD and within a couple of years they changed the name to XC70. The body style stayed the same and the two cars are almost identical (2.4L engine vs 2.5L in the XC70 etc and some minor changes).

      @@EverydayProjects Was it necessary to do a transmission reset/relearn as it is on newer models. You have the 5speed auto if I remember correctly. Just not sure when Volvo started the reset procedure.

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  3 місяці тому +1

      @@thatsonebadhatharry8610 I did not have to do a reset/relearn process. Only thing is there has been a SERVICE light on the dash for a month prior to this. Not a check engine light. I think I can just reset the service light and be good.
