  • This video features my 1991 Yaesu FT-890/AT. It was the first HF tranaceiver I purchased. I still consider it my “old friend.” I made many DX contacts with this radio and a simple G5RV antenna. The receive audio is still unrivaled in my opinion. And I still get compliments about the TX audio. This radio has no TX equalization or DSP. It just has straight ahead great 2-way communications quality audio.
In this video I show the internal wide-range antenna matching unit in action. Listen carefully and you will hear the motors spinning.
I wish the manufacturers wouldn’t have stopped installing these type antenna matching units inside the transceivers, but, admittedly this one takes up about 30-35% of the space inside the radio. It uses motors to adjust air dielectric capacitors and relays that switch in and out various inductors, as needed.
Since the SDR architecture in so many of today’s radios saves so much space, you would think there would be room enough for this type of wide-range antenna matching unit in these newer transceivers. I personally think it’s another situation where the manufacturer saves money and hopes that we will buy anyway; and we do.

The FT890-AT was my first HF rig and a reward for getting my code requirement under my belt. I think it was 1991 or 1992 and I still have it. --- dennis n1kpz

I bought one of these for $200.00. It's mint and works like brand new. I've got a 7300 and a DX-10. I love this radio.

This generation have unbeatable tuners. 890, 900, 990 and 1000D. They will all match a bacon sandwich. On most any frequency. L's are realay switched with twin motor driven C's. If you only want to run 100w, they are all a viable choice. And beautifully built internally too. Thx Doug. 73 de Mike

@@n4hnhradio and I still own and have used them all except the 1kD (NIB). Until that is 2 months ago when I was closed down. Permanently. Now looking for a new home.

If only I could find one like it refreshed and in very good condition, I'd be very happy own even just that one hf rig. I don't need them bells and whistles. What's important is it can communicate.

My FT-890/AT is still one of my favorite radios of all time. I won’t part with mine. My brother, my friend, and I sometimes get together for a rag chew, using our 890s.

Great radio, I have the sister model the FT 900AT.

Indeed. The 900 is an LCD version of the 890, also with a removable faceplate option. I owned one for a few days. Bought it on eBay. It arrived busted up, even though it was double-boxed and neither box showed any sign of damage. Strange. It took 3 months to get a refund. It burned me about using eBay.

    Nostalgic feeling maybe? 🥰

I too am a fan of the “knobs and buttons” a bit of a learning curve with the new stuff, but that’s the direction it’s gone and it’s all good too. I just recently Re-homed my FT-990 after years of faithful service. To a friend who’s new to HF. I’m excited for him.

It won’t beat your 710 head to head on pulling out weak ones, but it has great quality TX and RX audio.

Cool transceiver. I'm glad you still have it and use it from time to time.

    • @n4hnhradio
      @n4hnhradio  Рік тому

Thanks Martin! That little transceiver brought great memories. It might not hold up to the FTdx10, FTdx5000MP, etc., but, using the external DSP unit that I showed in one of the videos, it does fairly well.

all of those early 90s rigs are sweet! I still have 2 of my old 1991-1992 rigs my old Kenwood TS-850sat's and they still hold their own in today's world. I had to rebuild both of the 850s receivers ( DDS and all of the leaking electrolytic capacitors) I was so happy to have those rigs then - they had that "wow" factor - my club had an FT-890 on a 5 band vertical antenna and it was ( still is) a real work-horse. I started out with a Heathkit HW-101 SSB rig, and using those modern rigs was a real treat - especially with a good set of filters. - I spent a fortune on mechanical filters back then. ended up buying a Icom IC-746PRO around 2004 and with IF DSP just amazed me.... when I turned my then brand new IC-746PRO I thought it was deaf! no background noise. but those old Kenwood TS-850s(at)s are still on my bench. so I know what you mean with the attachment to those old war-horses , they really are good friends.
BTW, to clean that old rig up - you might try what I use to clean up old rigs = I use Ballistol ( it's a German gun oil) it cleans grime and other yuck from old delicate paint, it does not harm plastic, nor it won't attack rubber (actually helps old rubber feet, flywheel tires back to almost original softness all whilst cleaning up the gunk. it shines up the buttons and chassis oh yeah it wont swell wood either , so if you have a rig with a wooden cabinet , it won't harm it either also it's non-toxic . the only problem.... it doesn't smell very good. I cleaned a friends old Zenith Trans-Oceanic 3000-1 that was filthy. with Multi-purpose Ballistol . he was stunned Really enjoying your content . 73

I remember when the FT-890 came out. Popular and well regarded. Gives you everything you need without menus and receiver that still holds it's own. First new rig I bought after I was licensed was a TenTec Corsair II.

I always wanted an 890 back in the day, but ended up with a 900. Today I have more rigs than I can use and need to thin out the herd. Thanks for the short trip around the 890 block!😊
