  • Snowmobile fan belt tension adjustment. This video will show you how to properly adjust your fan belt tension if you own a two stroke fan cooled snowmobile. Its very easy to do and will help your fan cooled snowmobile run cooler.
The snowmobile in the video is a 1986 arctic cat cougar 500 fan cooled. The fan belt was loose and needed adjustment.
In the middle of the snowmobiles fan belt pulley are shims which either move the fan belt pulley halves closer or further away from each other, which allows loosening or tightening of the fan belt.
When adjusting a snowmobile fan belt, you should be looking for 1/4" of play in the belt. Too loose and the belt will not cool the snowmobile correctly, too tight and you will put unnecessary drag on the fan belt bearings.
This procedure is almost the same for all fan cooled snowmobiles.
Every year you should check your snowmobiles fan belt tension and adjust it accordingly.

How about clutch belt on a 1980 arcticat trail cat 440. Is there a way to move the motor back or forward?

So if it's too tight do you take the shims out behind the second half of the pulley and put them in the middle

Great video! I have a 97 340 Arctic Cat and 95 440 Arctic cat both fan cooled. I imagine they are the same procedure as what you describe. I'll be checking mine soon. Also, for popping the nut loose, I would imagine an air impact would zap it right off without having to secure the pulley.

Then put the shims that you took out under the nut on the outside of the pulley so they won’t get lost.
