The only thing that is known about Tommy is that he is originally from Poland and then emigrated from France to America sometime later in his life. Nobody actually knows where he got the money to finance the movie lol.

The book is much darker. This movie is super funny and seems to play on the idea of the unlikely heroes: people who failed to make a great movie but still succeeded in a strange way.
But in the book, we learn that Tommy and Greg where best friends in real life, and that friendship slowly got more and more toxic. Tommy became basically Greg's sugar daddy, gave him financial stability, a place to live, etc. but started getting jealous of Greg when he went out with other friends and had girlfriends. Tommy got very controlling and toxic with him, and envious when Greg had any kind of success.
Tommy was very mysterious. He told conflicting stories to Greg about where he was from and how old he was. He also seemed to have had some kind of accident in the past, which, in my opinion, probably left him with brain damage. Tommy basically acted like Johnny in real life, so he was obviously an outcast, everyone thought he was weird, and Greg seemed to be his only friend.
Why does everyone love Johnny on the film? Why is he rich, popular, successful, with a girlfriend? Why does he seem to give deep advice to everyone? Because that’s what Tommy wanted to be. Johnny is Tommy's fantasy of what he could be.
Why does Mark betray Johnny in the film? Because Tommy felt Greg had betrayed him in real life.
After reading the book, The Room is still funny and absurd, sure. But it also feels very sad, it’s the projection of the state of mind and fantasies of someone that is deeply insecure and lonely.
(I read the book like 6 years ago, if someone wants to correct / add something, go ahead)

In fact, if I remember correctly Tommy didn’t even like Greg's book. But he loved the movie adaptation.

Yeah, I felt the movie didn't do the book justice. And the book pretty much ruined The Room for me. It removed the mystery, and filled that void with sadness.

God bless Tommy Wiseu for keeping that mystery alive in art where nobody knows anything about you. Which is so rare now a days with social media. Its him and Banksy.....Tommy might be Banksy!

I love this movie, imo it is part of the "The Room experience" by now. I've even listened to the audiobook of Greg Sesteros book the movie is based on. The book ofc goes into more detail, but at the same time it is all filtered through Greg. Tommy himself, at least to my knowledge, has never really spoken about what really is true and what isn't.
But if you really want more answers, there are some, like where he is really from and how old he is for example.
I recommend the wikipedia page on him. For the most part it has all the important points. The movie leaves out some of the more "risky" allegations, one would assume for legal reasons as well as brevity.
At the core Tommy was obsessed with redefining himself, shaping what he perceived to be "a legit actor". Someone like that is just bound to have an interesting life and i like that the movie really highlights that through all of this Greg and Tommy really stuck it out and that is a solid core for a movie.

was the Malcolm in the Middle story in the movie real?

    • @spacemonkeyentertainment6413
      @spacemonkeyentertainment6413 Місяць тому

@@pewburrito Sadly, no. I think they just had an opportunity to have a Bryan Cranston cameo and took it.
Greg did however, get "other opportunities" that he didn't pursue, because of The Room and Tommy generally being needy and demanding his attention.
How much of that is really true and if it really was a "big chance" he let slip "to be a good friend" is beyond me, since it is Greg telling the story and even by his own account he was a nobody trying to get his breakthrough role, so realistically it is as likely that Greg really had nothing better to do.

Say what you want about Tommy, but he followed his dream, made it happen, and then had someone else make a movie about him and that movie. Now he travels around and meets his fans at screenings. We could all learn a little from Tommy.

I've never seen this movie, but it makes me think of an ex who wanted to be Steven Spielberg, but he was a terrible writer and director and would micromanage everyone he hired to work for him. So one day I hear a DJ on the morning radio show saying there's a movie premier happening at a theater in town that night and he's letting everyone know because he's in the movie. Then I hear my ex's name as the director. Wild dogs couldn't have kept me from it. I wish I'd gone to the first showing, which was full of all the family and friends, although part of me is glad I didn't because this was the cringiest piece of sh*t movie I'd ever seen. I was embarrassed for everyone involved, and I *know* they had to be embarrassed. The was over 20 yrs ago and it's still funny. 😬😆
