I am a fan of Warn winches been using them for 45 years and yet to have one let me down. I stuffed an M8000 in my ARB bumper mounted on my 95 Taco. The bumper comes with a mounting bracket to mount the control box of a M8000 to the top of the bumper. Had to clock the clutch control and the supplied power cables were long enough to hook up to my auxiliary battery mounted on the passenger side wheel tub. I have a cold air intake so there was enough room. As always great video!
Thanks, Timmy. I just bought a Smittybilt winch for my 3rd Gen. I plan on keeping my stock bumper, and I'd like to mount the control box in the engine bay to possibly reduce the amount of trimming on my bumper, so this is very helpful!
Ioving the channel man. Very detailed stuff. Watching from Guyana 🇬🇾 which is located in South America. Not Africa.. most people think Guyana is in Africa but it’s not.. excellent. I have my 3RD GEN 4runner.. and looking to get the arb bumper plus a winch..
Hey Leon, I think you're the first person I've chatted with from Guyana. Good luck with the bumper and winch install. Thanks for being a fan of our channel. Happy Wrenching!
That works. It will get caked with dirt and mud though and sometimes get pelted with rocks and gravel in the wheel well. With that location, you'd want to make sure the controller cover is on tight, because if it popped off, grit would get in there and then you'd have a hell of a time connecting your controller.
Currently doing install on 1st gen taco and I have found getting the hood to latch properly is quite difficult to do without the support in place. Haven’t figured a solution yet
This is an interesting thought but the shrink tubing has a glue on the inside of the tubing that activates from the heat and pretty much does a complete job of sealing off the connection from moisture. If we put dielectric grease on the connection, that would inhibit the glue from sticking. So, I'd have to say the connections we made are about as waterproof as you can get due to how the shrink tubing is made. Same goes for the shrink butt connectors we used. The connectors not only shrink tight against the wire sheathing but they also have an adhesive that activates from the heat that completely seals off the connection from moisture. Thanks for the comment.
Yeah we did. We cut up the end cap that comes with the bumper kit so it can accept a bolt with the threaded hole side, and welded it onto the frame to box the end in.
@@TimmyTheToolman Hey thanks for replying to me! Hope you don't mind my observation on the "disappearing car". Also thanks for your videos. Really detailed and helpful. Used your timing belt replacement video for the 5VZ-FE engine in my sons Toyota 4x4. My son helped out and learnt a lot. He's an expert now and went around to his mates place & replaced the belt in his as well. Both cars running perfectly - no problems at all! Looking at installing a winch in my ARB Bullbar (you seem to call them "bumpers" over there in Merrica?). Trying to do a bit of research on this one. Cheers!
@@guanghunglo3594 You're welcome. Great to hear our timing belt video helped you out. That's cool you could share the experience with your son and he learned a lot. Good luck with the research for the winch install.
Well, for some people, it can be a looks thing to not have the box bolted to the top of the bumper. It's a much cleaner look having the control box hidden in the engine compartment. Lots of guys do this. Also, the box will block some air flow to the radiator, AC condenser, and maybe a trans cooler if the person installed one, which will hinder the cooling efficiency. Just saying.
I got my ARB in yesterday if I would've known that it isn't so compatible with reaching the clutch I wouldn't have bought it. Looks like I will have to do some cutting on a expensive bumper to make things accessible. Complete BS
It's a bit tight to get in there to turn the clutch lever, but it can be done. Did you try clocking the winch like we did to get the handle in the most ideal position for access?
@@matthewlee2686 There's square holes in the bumper below and on either side of the bumper fairlead slot. Sean can reach through the driver side hole to access the clutch release mechanism.

Thats a super tight fit even after removing the center brace
Right?!

I put the control box for my badland winch inside of the front passenger wheel well, in place of the window washer reservoir.

Which badlands did you get I'm hoping the apex 12k that I bought will fit
@@justinedmondson3501 I got the zxr 12000
Will it fit for a O2 sequoia the bumper in the winch?
The bumper is made for 1st Gen Tacomas and 3rd Gen 4runners so I would say No unless you want to do a bunch of modifications to make it work.
So now you have to open the hood to access the control box to plug and unplug your in and out switch .
No, he has a wireless remote. This model winch comes with both a plug in option, and a wireless remote.
14:16 for the win. Deez nuts
Your a gear wrench fan boy. I’m 50/50 GEarwrench and tekton
I've got some Tekton stuff, but yeah, I have a lot more Gear Wrench tools.
I haven’t heard anything about the ComeUp winch’s, I wonder how it’ll do for the long haul
They are supposedly well-built but this is coming from ToyTec.
Nice guys. Any negative effects since you removed that center support?
Everything is fine with the support removed. In a perfect world, we would have done some alteration/fabrication to keep the center support.
Currently doing install on 1st gen taco and I have found getting the hood to latch properly is quite difficult to do without the support in place. Haven’t figured a solution yet
Planning on almost the same location for my 01 Tacoma...do you know what lengths you cut those welding cables? Planning on ordering some.
Don't remember the lengths but 20 feet should be enough. Here's a link to some #2 welding cable like we used for the project: amzn.to/3ofyxwG
Awesome! 🙂
Thanks Jonas.
Put dielectric grease on electrical connections before using the shrink tube to make waterprof.

Would one of those big badlands apex winches fit in this bumper?
Don't know. I'd check with ARB and ask them.
Did y’all weld end caps onto the body frame?
Yeah we did. We cut up the end cap that comes with the bumper kit so it can accept a bolt with the threaded hole side, and welded it onto the frame to box the end in.
