hooking up the electric *for the first time* in my Old Truck Camper

  • My 2002 sunlight camper saga continues. Today we are going to try out the appliances and electricity to see if they work after replacing the roof and ceiling. This process is going slower than i'd like because of all the leaks and water damage i've been finding but we can't give up now. I am determined to get this old camper into the back of my 2011 toyota tundra and drive away into the western sunset before october ends!

At this point I think we ALL should just show up and get this done for her. Surely there are enough of us experienced enough to do a complete, and functional restoration.

      @@TorieRobot Have you ever seen that stuff you roll on in the Bed of a truck for a bedliner! It’s like a rubber sealer. Just google roll in bedliner, several different kinds will come up. I’m thinking that you could roll it on the top of the camper as well as the underside of the top, so you would be sealing it top and bottom, or the inside roof. You would just want it in a white color. It sticks to just about anything. And it would definitely seal everything. Keep up the great work! 😇

    Did your dad add sealant/caulk under each screw? Trust me, try 3M 5200. Buy the smallest tube, back out each screw a little bit and squish a pea sized dab of 5200 behind the screw head, then screw them back in. Do this all in one pass as 5200 starts curing as soon as you open the tube. Use tight fitting gloves and wipe off any excess goo. Try not to get it on your skin or clothes. Once this stuff cures, it is turns tire rubber solid and really hard to remove. I used it on my hot tub to seal some gaps around my water inlet. It's still good and solid 8 years later.

    To seal the roof use 2 part urethane (bed liner) NOT the cheaper 1 part stuff. Key or scuff with a abrasive cup brush, sand paper, scotch bright, ect. Clean well with acetone, the cleaner the better. Don't put the aggregate in it for smoother finish. Spray it on is best but can be done with a roller as well. I have done many of RVs this way and it works well and gives you a seamless urethane water proof layer.

And that even though life has it's ups and downs...As long as we keep pushing forward, we will make it across the finish line. It took me all these years to realize that it's not about the destination...It's all about the journey. 😊👍🏼
    I hope you are having an amazing day and weekend, and that things haven't gotten too crazy up there with the hurricane. I know it hit the Eastern seaboard pretty hard, and places like Asheville, NC flooded horribly. I hope Stephi and her pups and house are ok.
    Keep on being amazing...And always remember, even if things get tough and you don't think you can do it...I believe in you. 🤟🏼❤🌹😘

    Hey T, so when I built my trailer as well as the boats I make I use something called poor man’s fiberglass which is completely water tight and super easy to do. You just mix 50/50 tight bond wood glue and water, roll it on, then lay down a big sheet of line fabric over it, pull it tight and roll on another coat or two. It will harden like a perfect water grill shell and cutting around the fan and whatever else is super easy with an exacto knife. All of your water issues will be solved instantly. Lastly it’s completely paintable after it dries. Hope this helps T!

    Well hello Victoria,
    I can feel your pain with the water issues... Water will always find the path of least resistance! I've never used it..? But I'd try spraying a few lite coats of that flex seal over all the outside screws and sides of the roof..? To make a waterproof membrane outside to seal out the water from coming in..?
    What do you have to lose @ this point? Maybe even trying it on the inside where water is coming in..??
    The commercial for flex seal, It will build a boat? Good luck with finishing your home!

    You fixed everything else. I really think the canvas should be replaced. You can’t seal and waterproof that canvas it’s way too damaged. They make many kind of canvas tents that you could buy and cut the canvas from the tent and replace the destroyed canvass you have on now. Not only does it look bad but it’s not going to do a good job of keeping out water and everything else. You could buy a used canvas tent to save money. If you know someone that can sew you could sew plastic flexible windows in it. But it’s ok if you can’t put windows in that. The canvas is really bad it needs to be replaced. It doesn’t have to necessarily be canvas there’s many materials that could be used but canvas is what you said it is now. So yea. But there are other options. When you are camping and it’s raining and windy you won’t be happy with water and wind getting in your camper. Through the canvas. If I lived near you I’d help you for free. Someone should be helping you finish it off. Once it’s done you will have a good camper.

  • @rebelcase3304
    @rebelcase3304 2 дні тому +1

    Check the rubber seal around the outside of the window trim where the window meets the metal. Being that's an older camper. The sun dry rotes and shrinks the rubber seal. That could be where your problem of leaking is over that window. Also, you could get a small thin rubber seal to put on the roof top edge where it meets the lower edge as you crank it down so that it creates a rubber seal which is as well waterproofing that break point on the side walls when it's in the down position.

    • @TorieRobot
      @TorieRobot  2 дні тому +1

      I’ve checked that- it’s not from the window but I did seal that too

    • @rebelcase3304
      @rebelcase3304 2 дні тому

      @TorieRobot ok yeah that's good I just had that problem with mine and thought maybe it's your window. I'm glad it's not. I would try to put a thin rubber seal all around the under edge of the roof lip so that it meets the side walls when in the down position. I did that to mine as well and it stopped the water from pushing into the canvas as I was driving and making it leake all around the front and sides. And when parked in the down position

    There's a special place in hell for the dude who sold this to you. But you have everyone's support. Speaking of which the only bit of advice I'd provide after watching this is that while I don't know exactly what caulk you've been using and where but try and make sure it's outdoor and non-shrink so it lasts longer. All caulk will eventually fail as it ages so maybe leave yourself room to inspect everything a couple times a year. The ceiling turned out great! Nice work :)

  • @adriankung1625

    Only have 1 suggestion -- you could paint the whole roof, edges and all, with liquid rubber/ rubberized paint. Do yourself a favor and look into it -- seems it would be easier and provide a more reliable, robust water-proofing. EDIT -- Another suggestion might be to build a light-wight camper from scratch, relying on channels like Traveling by Tacoma, Wandering with Kate, or Endgame for instruction/ideas. Might just be easier in the end and you could take and use misc parts from the water-damaged unit.
    Cheers -- and good luck!...from North Vancouver

You Hair, makeup, tattoo's and your body, all Victoria perfect. I know when you add you own creativity and beauty into the final touches but I feel like you will never be fully happy unless the pieces you are adding now are not up to your standards and there is nothing wrong with that. I can imagine you laying down at night and looking around thinking, I wish I would have done x, y and z different. Glad that your appliances work. Most of your leaks likely will be at fasteners (screws, etc.) and gaps in corners. The rain substituted for the "water hose" leak test and may have found most of your leaks. I know it is not exciting to see all the leaks, but it does point out where they are. I like your plastic (tile looking) ceiling. Looks nice. Keep going and you will win in the end!! .. ROBERT

And when things get overwhelming it’s often best to step back take a break to let your mind clear. It helps to see the problem in a different light.
