- Crop a Photo to a Heart Shape - Make great use of Photoshop Custom Shapes to crop your photos.
Learn how to crop a photo to a heart shape or any other shape in Photoshop. This process uses a filled shape which you can draw yourself or draw using any one of the huge number of custom shapes that are included in Photoshop. Your will then use the shape as a clipping mask to crop the image. This effect is simple to create and it offers you a lot of possibilities for working with your photos. You can use it for St Valentine's Day cards, for your blog or sharing on social media.

Ok, so this is a photo of my cat Molly - she is awesome, she sits in my window as I work, she has worked out how to distract me by using her nose and tail on my touch monitor - who knew cats could click icons and move things around the screen using just their tails! She keeps me company and I love that.
So, in the interests of the Molly in your life or the sweetie or anyone else or thing you'd like to cut out in a heart shape - or indeed any other shape. Here's how to do it in #Photoshop.

Jasmine I used an older version. Probably CS5 or CS6. But this technique will work pretty much in any version.

Hi Helen, thanks for your tutorial. You explained it so well :) By the way, I would like to ask how can you transfer the heart shaped image to paste or put it on other image file?
Shirley Galapago Hi Shirley, thanks for your kind comment. To get the final image layers into another image, choose Select > All to select the entire image and then Edit > Copy Merged - this copies the merged image and you can then paste it somewhere else. If you don't need the layers then flatten the image first by choosing Layer > Flatten Image (or Merge Visible will work the same) and then do the Select > All and Edit >Copy ( you don't have to do Copy Merged since you will only have one layer if the image is flattened).

Great video Helen, thank you so much. In learning this Photoshop feature through your video with Molly as main star, I came across some shapes that are not filled, (kind of like a picture frame), so when applied, the cropped image ends up within the shape itself (i.e. the frame) and not in the area where it should be, which shows transparent. Kind of a reverse process. Can you tell me how to crop my photo with "non filled" shapes? Thanks!

It shows how to use border brushes as frames - you don't have a brush, but you do have a frame that you want to use so I think this might be the solution you are looking for. Let me know if you still need help once you have watched this.

Helen, will this method work when I want to put a photo into a heart shaped frame photo (not an actual frame)
+GOAR GOAR Hi there, if you buy a heart shaped frame image it should have a cutout section in it. If you place the photo on a layer below the frame you shouldn't need to do any cutout at all.
