@@flakey90210 I mean, yeah, tbhc has a more refined sound and it is definitely an instrumental evolution, but with humbug they managed to reach the synergy between instrumentals and lyrics. And not to mention that they did that as their 3rd record.
I think this album needs to find you at the right moment to really appreciate it. I was a casual AM listener (I knew the 5 main songs) but when I heard Crying Lightning for the first time, on a gloomy autumn day, I was utterly bewitched and from then on I couldn’t get enough of AM. This whole album has a similar vibe, which is what I like best, and that’s why it’s my favourite album ever. Conversely, 505 -their most popular song- was a grower for me.
One word for this album....patience! If you are patient with this album and give it time. It is amazing. Took me a fair few, listen throughs for me to get this. But when you do...wow.
It's crazy how the Arctic Monkeys can make albums that perfectly transition into one another. Like mix their debut and Humbug together and you'll get Favourite Worst Nightmare. After that you have Suck It And See which continues ideas from Humbug infused with elements that would later evolve into AM. At first I just couldn't get used to the sound of this album and it put me off because of how much it differs musically from the first 2 albums. But after a while it definitely grew on me and I've come to really appreciate it. Out of ten I'd give it a 7 or an 8. I do suggest that you guys react to all of their albums chronologically, you just get a better perspective of their evolution, Suck It And See next! Thanks for this guys.
This album is definitely a grower. Hardcore fans put it on such a high pedestal that I was so disappointed on first listen but I love it now. So I'm not surprised you guys didn't like it. I'd rank it 3rd, just behind their first two albums. When you've listened to all of their albums, you realise how much Humbug was needed for their sonic evolution, I think. As for Suck it and See it's easily my least favourite album from them but if you want the full picture of their evolution I think it'd be interesting to give it a listen. AM will bring more views tho haha
This album always gives me Lullabies to Paralyze vibes, not surpising considering Josh Homme helped to produce to it. he's the lead singer from Queens of the Stone Age. You fellas should give their discography a listen, i'm sure you'll love it.
Humbug was pretty much hated by everyone when it came out in 2009, only to end up becoming a fan favorite later once SIAS and AM came out... You'll appreciate it more once you hear what follows.
@@bound2214 no worries, your reaction was expected haha... But i do hope you'll give it another listen, as it really is a record that demands a few listens.
Humbug was the second album i heard after AM and for some reason when i finished listening to it i immediately knew i was gonna love arctic monkeys. Probably the reason why I enjoyed it so much was because I hadn´t heard their first 2 albums so I didn´t really knew what to expect from this band.
I strongly agree. Humbug is a great album in terms of sound, but the problem is Alex Turner, as you said, he can sound dark without singing that sleepy and smooth, just listen to cornerstone and pretty visitors, is a great song with great lyrics but most of the tracks are just enjoyable musically and not that lyrically or vocally (which is 50% of the album) i think that's the problem that most of the people have listening to humbug and humbug fans just don't get it
So I’m a bit late to this reaction, but thought id provide a bit more context to some of the album in case y’all re-listen to it. Basically, most of the albums is about drugs lol. The “propeller” is Alex’s mood/feeling of self… and he needs to take drugs to get his propeller “spinning”, i.e. feel good. A lot of the time he uses a girl to represent drugs, I think if you re-listen to the album by just trying to find references to drugs you’ll get a lot more understanding in the weird lyrics/metaphors. It’s definitely a transition album, and a bit of a sleeper. I personally think it gets better with more listens! Relisten to “Potion Approaching” and you’ll realize he’s not being so subtle about his drug references haha.
me thinks you might aswell just go chronologicaly at this point. suck it and see is definitely worth listening to. dont skip it just b/c people says its the worst. some peak songwriting by alex, coming right after the submarine ep. also some of there most straightforward rock songs in like a u2 way. i prefer it over AM and FWN
Im so glad I am from 05 and not from 1990 and i didnt have to experience their career growth bc the first two albums are amongst my favourites and then in here besides the classic songs like crying lighting and cornerstone and a few more this album is way too much of a let down from the first two
The sonic shift from the first two albums compared to this one is insane...
Humbug had a hypnotic quality to it, totally pulls you in.
The jewellers hands is the most underrated song ive ever heard
so is secret door
Their best work so far
thats tbhc
@@flakey90210 nope. Humbug changed the complete panorama of the band and somehow led it to what it is today.
@@lalolanda0114 to me humbug is the third best, but tbhc changed their sound too, and for better

funny because sias its one of the best lyrically and a very consistent album
p.d. same with humbug, first listen hrryble, now one of the best
@@reylui0250 yep alex' poetry was spot on in that album
i was waiting for this one!! now my favorite AM album by far, but it’s certainly a grower.
Haha! You talked about the strokes and thats what Alex always dreamed of. Lol.
Right on!
Some of their best work is on this album, Secret door, Cornerstone, Pretty visitors! 100% my fave album
Brilliant reaction though guys!
Thanks!

Interesting, completely different context for sure!
Album is such a grower though, my second favourite from them
My absolute favourite AM album 🥹🥹🥹
In my opinion it's a weird album, but the dark and experimental mood make it interesting as well
Good reaction like always guys
Thanks so much for watching!
Love your reactions, hug from Brazil 🇧🇷
