There's no one else on this planet who could of sat down and wrote brothers in arms telegraph road and tunnel of love, Mark knopfler is a classified GENIUS and he's been massively overlooked in the music industry

I think you summed up a lot of what makes Knopfler so special. His understanding and usage of space, volume and phrasing is unusual for rock guitarists. It’s refreshing to see a great guitarist not care much about sounding flashy (though he has done that in other songs) and just let the guitar breathe. And it’s always so tasteful, playing the perfect notes as the chords change and making you feel each one. He perfected this style in his solo work. Hopefully you’ll cover more from him down the line!

'tunnel of love' is one of the greatest rock/pop songs ever written!!! it needs to be played very loud to fully appreciate it!!!

Dire Straits were always the epitome of understated, tasteful rock, and Knopfler especially was always that subtly virtuosic player that somehow managed to combine showy technique while also writing solos and licks that fit the song perfectly. He was second to none among rock guitarists when it came to touch, phrasing, and dynamics. This is definitely one of their best, but they have so many great, underrated tracks. It's a shame they didn't release more music. Like Steely Dan they seemed to be perfectionists that simply didn't release music until they made sure they had had everything in just the right place. The result is a spectacularly consistent (but sparse) discography.

One of the best reactions to this song. While you can choose Alchemy Live versions for SOS, TR, & R&J songs to react to, in my opinion this one goes to this remastered studio version (glad you caught that, the mix is a bit different when heard from a good stereo setup). Roy Bittan (of E Street fame) makes a great addition to the band in the sessions. Mark's rhythm sections are spot on (he plays them besides the lead), but John I. on bass & Pick W. on drums are so underappreciated usually - and your reaction gives them their due.

The "Spanish City" referred to in this song was an amusement arcade complex in Whitley Bay in the North East of England.... Being from this area that shout out means more to most locals as kids most of us spent many a happy time hanging out in the arcades or on the rides or walking up the coast promenade to Cullercoats 🤔🤔🤔👍👍👍👍👍👍

In my opinion Dire Straits or Mark Knopfler should be listened to like reading a book with a beautiful story. Mark is a storyteller. I believe that the real experience of how good they are is hearing them live. The variety of nuances they achieve is unbelievable. I believe you will like it. And live, you get the true extent of Mark's versatility and skill on guitar. Not to mention Terry Williams' powerful drums in tune with John Ilsley's base...

If you felt you wanted more, please please go listen to the live version. My favourite is from the Alchemy album, but the Wembley 1985 version is fantastic. Please listen to it. Music doesn’t get better.
And this version you listened to is identical to the original album version from Making Movies.

Yes the music is kinda happy, but the lyrics is not, he is remembering a young love from one night, that wanted to remain annonymous to him and never saw her again (He later regrets that choice..., this can be something that has hapenned to everybody... knowing a person and never see them again), BUT the way the music is telling the story is being happy in the parts that the lyrics is telling the joy of the story, look how when he is saying that "now he is looking between the arcades" to find her again the music's rhytmn is different, long notes, letting the sadness get in, and then later... The very soft part: Girl I looks so pretty to me... With even more sadness, and the happy rhytmn just died, afther that part is not the lyrics that is telling us the sad ending of the story, but is the guitar solo itself, let them us know that he didnt found her again (or someone like her as you said).

look at the Alchemy live video of the album ! Nothing compares as a live presentation ! Mark is probably one of the best exponents of finger picking style - he does use a pick !! The studio albums are great but if you want to look at Mark up front with the rest of Dire Straits, you will be blown away with the level of skill on display from all the musicians ! For Me Telegraph Road and Sultans of Swing on this album are monumental !

Anyone who experiences DS songs for the first time should see live performances. They are so much better and you get to see the awesome band play. Tunnel Of Love from DIRE STRAITS Live "The Final Concert" 1986, the solo at the end is so good and so long. Also Private Investigations from DS Live "On The Night" 1992 is just jawdropping. Anyway love your channel. Cheers from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸
