  • In this video I will show you how to build a backyard playset / swingset with only wood! No playset kits or metal brackets are necessary, and you do not need to cut or weld any metal. The playset includes room for two swings, a climbing wall, a slide, a roof, and you can easily add more onto the sides if you want to! This will turn your backyard into the playground your kids will love and remember.
    The basic construction of the playset consists of three A-frames with a 4"x4" beam spanning across the three frames. Gussets and reinforcements made from wood are added to strengthen the corners.
    I recommend using treated wood for everything on the playset, except for the deck boards that make up the landing and climbing wall. Since treated wood may contain chemicals that are not so friendly, untreated cedar or similar is the best option for the boards that your kids will be touching the most.
    Be sure to use structural screws to screw everything together that is structural! Only use deck screws on the deck boards! I address this in the video and I want to be very clear that deck screws should not be used to hold the whole structure together! Another important must have are ground anchors. Please anchor your playset. It is extremely important to do so and the anchors are not that expensive. A playset is very heavy and it could tip over and seriously injure a child if it is not anchored to the ground.
    In the plans I've included the optional roof, and in the video you'll see a few extra add on features like the cedar plant box and solar powered LED patio lights. These are obviously not necessary but they add a fun personal touch to the playset.
    You will find links below to various items used in this build.
    You can find a link to the plans (PDF) here. These plans are provided free, in good faith, and are not certified, guaranteed, or approved by a structural engineer or the like. Use your good judgement when constructing your play set as I will not be held accountable for any associated losses, damages, injuries, etc.

    Love the vid , as for the eye bolts for the swing if you use a large ratchet with a deep set socket you can just twist it and screw it in super fast 👌🏼

      Definitely! I've seen that somewhere before, unfortunately I didn't have anything large enough for the job as the eye bolts were fairly big.

    I actually like this "light" structure. Both my kids are under 3 and i imagine this would be perfect for them. They would run it into the ground in two years making way for a bigger version lol. Nice project!

      Thanks! My daughter is only 1 and a half , but I do see it lasting her for a while. At 12ft long and 8ft high it could comfortably accommodate two adult swings. There are certainly more elaborate and even larger play sets out there but I did built it bigger than some of the pre fab kits I was looking at.

    How’s the leveling holding up. I’ve got a decent slope I need to combat and trying to avoid the costly regrade. Only leveling the ground contact with this method sounds great!

      So far so good, hasn't moved at all. It's been through one Canadian winter so far and no sinking or heaving as of yet...

    Did you use 2/4 for landing and claiming wall?

    • @EmbraceMaking
      @EmbraceMaking  3 роки тому +2

      Ended up using 5/4 x 6 cedar deck board for those as I didn't want treated wood for areas that the kids would be commonly touching

    Do you provide a cut list?

    • @EmbraceMaking
      @EmbraceMaking  3 роки тому +2

      I didn't put together a cut list, only the overall drawing... but I could probably go back and generate one with one of those online cut list optimizers...

    Are you worried about 2x6s not being strong enough? Not sure I've ever seen a swing set with boards only 2 inches wide.

    • @EmbraceMaking
      @EmbraceMaking  4 роки тому +2

      Not concerned for now... I gave it the 200 lbs man swinging like an idiot test and the whole thing barely moves. The two frames that make up the platform area are extremely well fastened together. The lone frame on the far side is the only one that I would ever consider "beefing up." I told myself down the road if the boards start to warp or any signs of rot I can easily replace that far side A frame with 4x4 posts but the 2x6s in the meantime don't even budge.

    Hi 👋 what's the weight capacity for adult to swing.?

    • @EmbraceMaking
      @EmbraceMaking  3 роки тому +1

      Not 100% sure on the max capacity but I'm about 210lbs and use the swing regularly. I don't go too crazy on it but just casually swing with my daughter in the toddler seat and haven't had any issues!

    Genius.. How much did you pay for all of the wood material?

    • @EmbraceMaking
      @EmbraceMaking  2 роки тому

      Thank you! This was a while back before the prices of wood went crazy... at the time I think I paid about $500 for all of the materials including the canvas top, rock climbing pieces etc.
