    Thank you for posting this. I'll be butchering my first pig soon and it's helpful to see a potbelly pig processed.

    Great video thanks for sharing! Don’t let all the sidewalk spitters get to you it’s a natural process on the homestead! We process a lot of our own meat it’s so much better than store bought, gonna start doing meat chickens next yr.

    Thx… just today had pot belly pig put down for butchering. Showed up in our garden 3 1/2 years ago. We just could not continue to pay for feed. He was pretty Ferrell/ wild. It was hard, but we thanked him for giving us himself. RIP 😢

    Very informative and exactly what I was looking for. Seems like potbellys would be perfect for a small urban homestead, like I hope to have some day.

    We are thinking of potbelly for our farm. Needed this video. I'm disabled and the smaller pigs will be easier for me to handle and process. Specially since most of the meat will be used for sausages.

  • @georgewallace1696
    @georgewallace1696 3 роки тому +8

    48% seems a low return rate. Just think a moment: head cheese, tongue, brain, cheeks sausage bits, lard. Then there's liver, kidneys, sweetbreads, more lard, cracklins, blood sausage, chitlins, sausage casings: basically everything except the squeel! Break and boil the bones for lard. Read James Mitchner's book "Poland" about the careful detailing of food value extraction from a pig's head.

    • @keralee

      Agreed. The bits are all fine eating. We have lost too much of a very precious knowledge base in just a few generations of modern living.

    • @ashmacc7868
      @ashmacc7868 2 роки тому

      @@Gigachadly I'd wager bc the separation between the raising, slaughtering and consuming grows ever wider?? Majority of folks don't connect with their food aside from time spent in store shopping, and in the kitchen fixing it.
      Collecting the less marketable "bits" that are perfectly edible for some people doesn't hold as much appeal in a mass production setting. It's about profit above all else. Easier to get the popular cuts and sell off the less popular stuff to be made into dogfood and goodness knows what all else.

    You said they don't root? We have 4 pot belly pigs and they are the best rooters we've seen. That's why we got them. So far they have completely rooted out two very large garden spots. If you want a clean, semi fertilized garden area I suggest pot belly pigs.

    • @roosterhollowhomestead
      @roosterhollowhomestead  2 роки тому +2

      If your pig is rooting that will mean they are lacking minerals. I would get some hog minerals and add to their feed. That is if you don’t want them to root. Just keep in mind if planting a garden where pigs were you need to wait 4 months minimum before you can harvest from your garden area. This is because pigs have disease pathogens and the plants will absorb these pathogens. You can look up more info online about this. If your just planting tomatoes or peppers this is not a issue as it takes more than 120 days to harvest, but you cannot plant radishes in that area as they only take a few weeks before harvest.

      @@roosterhollowhomestead according to everything we've read and learned rooting is natural for pot belly pigs. Their snout is made for it. It doesntvmean some deficiency in their diet.
      PetMD " Rooting is the act of a potbellied pig digging and searching with its snout. Rooting is not only an important and innate part of a potbellied pig’s behavior, it’s also incredibly beneficial for its overall health and well-being."

      @@roosterhollowhomestead great advice!! I'm watching the video and pursuing comments to see what else I can learn.
      Personally, I don't want the ones I'm getting tomorrow to root in the main yard, but I have a wooded lot prone to flooding behind us that I plan to turn them out into now and again so they can forage for "mast" (pannage?) where rooting won't matter. What kind of minerals do you suggest/give yours? Are there differing minerals you need to give depending on their current needs or is it just an all encompassing broad range mineral supplement? We have a local Tractor Supply as well as a county farmer's co-op that I'm thinking I can get whatever I need from.

    • @roosterhollowhomestead
      @roosterhollowhomestead  Рік тому +1

      If they are lacking in minerals they will root. Ours did at first also. We had them in a small area while we fed them a balanced pig mash with minerals. After 3 weeks they stopped rooting. Then we knew they were balanced and could then be moved to our pasture. This was all explained in other videos. Sorry about your lawn.

      @@roosterhollowhomestead They (two) like using the mineral block as a scratching post. Right now, they have reign over 2.5 acres. I will set up smaller paddocks and move them to better manage the mess. Wrong minerals, perhaps.
      Off-topic, did you castrate? There are two males from my litter (three weeks old). From what I've read taint is a crap shoot and the discussion appears to be around the larger breeds. Your opinion?

    • @roosterhollowhomestead
      @roosterhollowhomestead  Рік тому +1

      @@jpparker19 yes I castrated. I also have a video showing exactly how. Check it out. And yes wrong minerals. Find a feed mill near you and ask for pig minerals. You want a mineral that is in powder form that you can add to the feed. It should have large amounts of Salt, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium and trace amounts of copper, iodine and manganese. Pigs don’t take well to blocks (at least in my experience) Feed mills usually have it in powder form. We buy all our feed from a mill as they add the correct amount of minerals to the feed and I don’t have to worry about it. But if I feed them leftovers I add 1/4 cup of minerals on top of the food. We got a 50# bag of minerals for $34 2 years ago and I still have almost half a bag so I will last you for a good while.
      As far as boar taint. It is a real thing. If you separate the males away from the females so they never see them you can avoid taint. But if the male knows or smells a female in heat the meat will be tainted. Easier to castrate.

      If they are rooting you need to add some minerals to their feed. We feed commodity mix feed. It has minerals already added. If they root it is because they are lacking minerals.
