    Excellent review! This is exactly the way a pedal review should be produced: Professional edits, no talking and a clear view of the pedal/settings. I really don't want or need to see the guitarist for a pedal review.

    This is the best PH-2 demo I've seen so far. I don't know why it's taken me so long to find it. Well done!!

    I LOVE my 15 year old PH-2 phaser. It tends to whistle with high gain pedals, so I got another Small Stone and the Ibanez PH-7 (not bad). However, the Roland PH-2 funks all over them !

    As far as I know there is no audible difference between Japanese and Taiwanese models. The PH-2 I used for the demo is a Taiwanese model and it sounds quite good - but always "in your face". It's not really a subtle sounding pedal. I rather like to have a PH-1R someday.

    If you use the phaser before an overdrive/distortion it will sound warmer and wah sounding. Nice for guitarleads :)

    • @PepeMusic
      @PepeMusic  10 років тому +4

      I tried that, but I was not pleased with the tonal result with any of my overdrive or distortion pedals after the PH-2. Maybe it's just me, but I made the experience that some phasers sound great beofre a dirt pedal and some simply don't. Since the PH-2 is a 10-stage phaser it might be that I rather like 4- or 6-stage phasers before dirt in general, because other phasers sound better when I run them into my dirt pedals (at least to my ears). But anyway I love my modulation effects like flanger, phaser and chorus after dirt. Only the wah before it, of course.

    To me a phaser sounds cliche on distorted but wow, sprinkle this on some clean parts and it really gives some moderism.

    Had this on my board. But it dominated when switched on. Mine is old and they converted it to PSA 9v. That's why I got it thinking perfect for my board. Switched out for a Mooer liquid phase. Half the price, twice the different sounds. I can do Phase 90 mod and script and Phase 45 mod and script. Plus more. Mini pedal, 3 wave shapes, 5 different phase sounds that can be mixed on each setting. I still got my Boss but ain't never gonna be on the main board anymore. Also did it to a Boss DD-5. Great pedal but Donner Echo Square kicks its butt. Also mini. More real estate, cleaner board. Check'em out.

    I only know those Amdek pedals from various websites. The circuits are exact matches of the original BOSS models. I think the Amdek Phk100 is technically the same as the BOSS PH-1R. Go for it, if you can get it for a reasonable price.

    Hi, great demo! I'm considering buying this pedal. Is there a big difference from a made in Taiwan vs. Japan. I'm probably getting a made in Taiwan, the Japanese pedals are tough to find o a bit expensive. Would you recommend it?

      You can see the list of my used gear right at the beginning of the video. It is just the phaser and the HM-2 distortion. The limiter tames the peaks only and the other effects at the end of the chain provide a more spatial sound that makes it more natural and less sterile overall. No wah pedal or other secret units.

  • @frangarcia1742

    great review! did you notice any sound drop when you turn it on/off after the dirt? I have the ph3 and it’s very noticeable :(

    • @PepeMusic
      @PepeMusic  3 роки тому

      Yeah, the PH-3 isn't really a perfect pedal. It's about time for BOSS to do a Waza Craft version that combines the PH-2 and the PH-1R.
      I provided the line-out recordings on my website (www.pepemusic.de/pedal_demos.htm). There is no volume drop in mode I and a slight volume boost in mode II.

      @@PepeMusic wow, amazing answer with those files. Thank you. I meant a little sound "cut" when using it after gain pedals. Mine does and it's not cool :( Just checking because a PH2 may be the way.

  • @MarioCastro_o
    @MarioCastro_o 5 років тому +2

    Does it increase volume when you switch it on??

    • @PepeMusic
      @PepeMusic  5 років тому +1

      As said in the video it does only increase some middle frequencies if you use very resonant settings in mode II. Apart from that the PH-2's sound is very well designed and in mode I the effect volume does always match with the input volume of your guitar as you can clearly hear in the video. (But I cannot guarantee if it's also the case if you use active pickups with very high output.)

  • @lostgroovemusic8494
    @lostgroovemusic8494 3 роки тому

    Does it sound good before overdrive or distortion like Eddie Van Tone or after overdrive or distortion?

    • @PepeMusic
      @PepeMusic  3 роки тому +1

      Both settings work with the PH-2, especially because it has a very resonant sound in mode II which can sound a bit like a wah in front of distortion. But usually I prefer phaser after dirt. In hindsight I should have recorded an example with dirt after the PH-2.

    Yes, that's what I want too! I found an Amdek Phk100 Phaser Pedal on the internet. I looked some info up and these were made by Roland as a sort of DIY pedal, and should have a similar circuit as the PH-1r. Do you know anything about this pedal? thanks for answering my previous question! :)

    This phaser is identical at mxr phase 100

    • @PepeMusic
      @PepeMusic  4 роки тому +1

      The MXR Phase 100 is a 10-stage phaser, just like the PH-2 in Mode I. So there could really be some overlap in sound. Not identical, but quite similar, I guess. The Mode II of the PH-2 (12-stage) is something that the Phase 100 cannot do, though.

    You ever try MXR phase 90 one

    • @PepeMusic
      @PepeMusic  3 роки тому

      I know how it sounds, but I have never tried one in person. It's a 4-stage phaser, somewhat comparable with the BOSS PH-1 or the KORG PHS-1. With its single knob the MXR isn't that appealing to me. The MXR Phase 100 should be close to mode I of the BOSS PH-2, since those two are 10-stage phasers.
      There aren't many phasers that I like. My personal favourites are the '70s KORG Mr. Multi, the '80s KORG KPH-401 module effect (both are 4-stage) and the 6-stage DingoTone Liquid Gold Phaser (rare pedal from Canada).
