I’m so pleased that I had surgery on mine. I’ve always been slender and physical. Due to medications I got lipodystrophy with visceral fat. My belly button popped out and was so tender. After my massive GI bleed a wonderful GI doctor had me meet Dr Martin Hertl (who later was in my team for a liver transplant). He fixed it up really nicely. There’s been no problem since. I love this guy ❤️❤️

I feel much better about my hernia now the one in the above picture is actually bigger than the one I have. I've always had an outie belly button but over the years it's gotten bigger it's protruding out about an inch. I noticed that when I lose weight it softens up and shrinks. Not completely but it's much much better. I've had no pain thank goodness and for the most part is still pretty normal color. Like I said I've always had an unusual belly button even from a kid. It was always painful to touch it. Thanks again so much for clearing my mind.

I greatly appreciate this very informative video. I'm 37, and I have an umbilical hernia which has not been painful, but recently it did get some bruising on the hernia itself and around my navel. I've been referred to a surgeon to see what I need. It's not as big as the image of the strangulated hernia you showed, and it has not been very painful. I do notice it becomes more rigid and slightly tender after I eat, especially if I have bloating. But I've had no problems passing gas or having a bowel movement. I was on opiates for many years, and they made me constipated, but I was careful to take stool softeners, suppositories, or even laxatives when it was necessary. I think the main cause of the hernia is that I was trying too hard to "dig" and clean out the recesses in my navel with tweezers, and that may have weakened the abdominal wall. That was when I noticed the hernia developed. The bruising is darkening and fading well, but I'm still wondering if surgery might be necessary for this hernia. Before it bruised, I tried a few times to push it back in, but I don't know if I did it correctly, and now I'm far too afraid to try that again with the bruising. I'll be making an appointment with a very good surgeon soon, but I would appreciate any advice or questions I should ask my surgeon. Thank you so much for this video; it helped me feel a little better about getting it fixed, and it relieved a little of my mental stress due to the fact that I'm having many other problems that might require surgeries. COVID has forced me to put off all these dental, endocrinological, and surgical appointments, but I'm at a point now where these problems could become more life-threatening than COVID itself. So I truly appreciate this informative video; it helps my mind rest a little more.

@@noorgillani6537 thank you, and I'm so sorry to hear your mother is dealing with this problem. I saw my surgeon, Dr. Hugh James, in Spartanburg, SC on February 7, and he was very detailed with his initial treatment. He has done many laparoscopic surgeries and open surgeries for umbilical hernias in his career, and he told me that he performs 2 or 3 of these surgeries per week. So it's VERY common. I'm fortunate to be able to see such an experienced surgeon, and I hope the same will be true for your mother. If you would like help finding an experienced surgeon, reply and let me know and I will give you my email address for correspondence to that nature. As for details, I can tell you that I learned that my hernia definitely needs surgery. It's about 3 cm wide, which is average for this kind of hernia. My surgeon told me that laparoscopic surgery is typically done for much larger hernias, and that he will be performing open surgery on my hernia. That means that he will make an incision at the bottom of my umbilical hernia, then push the protruded material back behind the abdominal wall, and then he will remove the herniated tissue. He estimated that my hernia is about the size of a walnut. If the hole in my abdominal wall is large enough, then he said he will put in a hernia mesh before he stitches everything up, which is a circular-shaped piece of synthetic mesh material that will strengthen the fascia and muscular parts of my abdominal wall and prevent more hernias in the future. This mesh has an excellent safety record, and he feels confident in using it if necessary. If the hole is small, then he said he will just put dissolvable stitches on the hole and he'll not use a mesh. Then he will use surgical glue along with stitches to close the bellybutton. He said I will need to take gentle laxatives like Miralax and fiber and refrain from lifting or rigorous physical activity for about a week after the surgery to avoid any straining, and then I will be able to lift more, up to about 20 lbs, and after a few weeks I can resume all normal activities. I take a supplement called kratom that is similar to opiate painkillers, so he will not give me narcotics for recovery. But it is typical for a normal patient to be given opiates for pain and advised to also take 600 to 800 mg of ibuprofen every 6 to 8 hours. Make sure your mother takes it easy and does not lift too much or strain her abdominal muscles before she can get the hernia treated. Some small hernias can just be pushed back in without surgery. I'm being very careful with mine. I just had 3 teeth pulled, and I still have 1 more wisdom tooth that has to be pulled, so I am postponing the hernia surgery for a while, and my surgeon and his nurse said that will be ok, but I might have to have another consultation if I wait several months. Dr. James said that pain after surgery is relatively little, and that some people have almost no pain, especially if they take the pain meds consistently as directed. I'm not so worried about the pain; I'm just trying to avoid strangulation, a rare serious condition where a hernia restricts part of the intestines and cuts off its oxygen supply, resulting in intestinal tissue death and gangrene. That condition can lead to serious illness, or even death, but remember it's very rare, and if your mother is careful not to strain too much, then it is very unlikely to happen. If she suddenly has excruciating, unbearable pain, then she must go to an emergency room as quickly as possible. Stay in contact, and I'll be glad to answer any questions or address any concerns you and your mother have. Let me know if you want to be in touch via email or even any other medium. I wish you both blessings and swift wellness.

OMG, back in the 1980s my maternal grandma had a hernia like this, which she left untreated for far too long..and that led to her having a bowel obstruction, a burst bowel, emergency surgery, and month long hospital stay...which culminated in her sudden DEATH, due to complications. 😲😭 😭 Recently I just realized I've developed a smallish imbilical hernia and because of what happened to grandma back in the day (when she was only 19 yrs older than what I currently am), I'm scared as heck now...😲😨

I think this one happened to me. I was doing crunches wrongly and a few days later, I saw a vertical hernia above my belly button. It tends to happen to moms who are/were pregnant bc their abdominal walls weaken with the stretching of their tummy. But I've never been pregnant and I'm actually underweight. It probably happened because (1) I have a weak core, and (2) I did not engage my abs properly 🤦‍♂️

    Hi Dr.
My baby is 8 weeks old and used to have quite bulky navel (it's getting flat now)
He turns to cry after every feed
His Tommy makes alot of noise and follows with a loud cry
I realise there is gas in his Tommy that makes him uncomfortable
Please there anything I can do to take away the pain?
    Please help me
