Understanding the Visual Elements - PATTERN

This video is the third in a series about the Visual Elements of Art and Design. Every work of Art & Design contains at least one of these seven Visual Elements (Line, Shape, Tone, Form, Texture, Colour, and Pattern), whether the artist put them there on purpose or not. Better understanding the Visual Elements and how they work together can help artists and designers create more effective works of art/design.
This video focuses on the third element; Pattern. A pattern is any design in which lines, shapes, forms or colours are repeated. If you know where to look, Patterns can be found everywhere in life and in this video, we will explore the two main groups of pattern.

How do you have irregular pattern? I thought patterns are supposed to be consistently regular.

That's a really good question.
In patterns something needs to be repeated. The reason we can have irregular patterns is because sometimes the bit being repeated changes slightly each time, this most commonly happens in nature. For example the lines on a fingerprint are repeated and form a pattern, but are slightly different each time. Another good example is ripples in sand dunes, the ripples are repeated forming a pattern but each ripple is unique.
