      India had to build dedicated freight corridors because of the horrible delays incurred by freight trains. Indian Railways is still predominantly a passenger-centric network. It will continue to be so for a long time to come. So, for important trunk routes, India has decided to build separate freight corridors to improve the flow of freights.

    • @lowercherty
      @lowercherty 3 роки тому +16

      Nearly every mainline North American train now uses DPU units. There are advantages like allowing longer trains and better braking control.
      Most North American railroads are "dedicated freight corridors" wiyh only two, at most, passenger trains a day, if any.

      @Kabuki Kitsune the fact that you need 4-5 diesels to do the job of these three locomotives. electricity is also cheaper than diesel(it depends) so it will probably pay for itself, plus the higher speeds that the electrics have and acceleration(effects on schedule) plus the lower maintenance of electric motors. on a cost basis you should search, but in the us the prices of diesel and fuel in general are lower than everywhere else so..., maybe it will happen one day when the circumstances are right. its not like there is any corridor in the us that is double track with high frequency and density. India probably doesnt get as cheap oil or as expensive electricity.

    • @lowercherty
      @lowercherty 3 роки тому +13

      @@PanosSkarp UP's main line from Chicago to Utah includes significant mountains and is double and triple tracked. Parts have seen up to 150 trains at 10,000 plus tons each per day. The trains include coal, general merchandise, grain, and containers.
      BNSF between Chicago and Los Angeles is double track all the way and sees about 60 similar trains per day. Their mountains aren't as bad as UP's. Both have looked seriously at electrification but couldn't justify it.
      Both CSX and NS from Chicago to the east coast are double tracked and heavily used.
      We have corridors with the needed traffic density but can't justify the cost at this time.

    • @NozomuYume
      @NozomuYume 3 роки тому +11

      @Kabuki Kitsune Plenty of Chinese passenger lines have double-stack-compatible catenary on lines also used by passenger trains.
      In the US, the Caltain electrification project is building catenary high enough to accomodate double-stack freight trains at night, though there are no plans for the trains to use electric locos.
      Obviously you are not gonna get 150mph+ on any normal HSR trainset when the panto has to go that high, but you shouldn't be running heavy conventional freight on an HSR line anyway. That doesn't mean that you can't raise the catenary to accommodate both freight and through-running HSR trainsets on 79-110mph lines.

      @@PanosSkarp The US operates freight trains that average 1.5 miles (2.41 kilometers). CSX operates freight trains as long as 3 miles (4.82 kilometers) routinely. That is why the US uses powerful diesel locomotives. That's not meant to dismiss what India has done, just don't count the US out due to bias.

    • @PanosSkarp
      @PanosSkarp 3 роки тому +5

      @@edinnorthcarolina--ovelhog5786 no I will never count out the US regarding freight railways. It's what makes sense economically at the moment and maybe one day they switch to electric if it is better for their cost. These investments carry long term benefits and not immediate but other investments are probably more urgent in the sector. I was saying that the US has the cheapest diesel that I know of so of course it makes sense while I don't know anything about your electricity other than there are different companies in different states.

The cost of raising tunnels and bridges in the areas it was done was huge, raising it even further would just stack the costs again.
