- Last week we covered raw performance for the Valve handheld. Today, we balance that with optimal settings for the Steam Deck in 5 community-voted games. Red Dead Redemption 2, Witcher 3, Elden Ring, Grand Theft Auto V, and Horizon Zero Dawn.

Here's the survey - let me know what games you want me to optimize next! forms.gle/CQafhs269ZJQABkk6
Thank you for showing this - just got my Steam Deck yesterday and there's a lot to learn!
Thanks a ton for this. I just finished downloading Red Dead so I didn't had to waste time tweaking the settings thanks to you.
Great video man! Love your content! Can't wait for the next video! (Also did the survey, looking forward to hopefully have final fantasy xv optimized in the next video)
Just got my deck last month and play the heck out of it
I cant find any games with better optimization as mad max.
Mad max is crazy good
This was great. Can't wait for the next videos.
I was wondering if you could look into docked performance. What settings do you need to get a locked 30 or sometimes 40 fps while rendering at 1080p. And then you could also see if that 30 fps 1080p game can run at 4K through FSR 2.0. Because FSR is mostly good for 1080p>4K
I'm getting mine tomorrow. Can't wait
Thank you very much! These are the main games I want to beat first on steam deck and now im all set for a great experience ❤️
Great video man, just what I was looking for. Thanks.
check out the whole playlist! optimize all the things
Dude could you do a series that focuses on optimizing every popular game ???
I think u would get a ton of views.
Either way thanx for this
Got GTA V for the Deck. I just have the refresh rate at 40 with everything on high/ultra except for shadows and reflections which are set to normal. Maintains a locked 40.
If you set Grass quality to "High" or "Normal", you should be able to get an even larger performance boost.
To fix the RDR2 crashes, set your page file size to 8gb
then reducing ram intensive settings would also fix the crashing.
How?
subbed.. but you are already past 5k :)
Keep it up! Even after I got my deck I find myself watching these videos!
Good one
You should show the games with the steam deck unplugged. Seeing how much battery power is used for a particular group of settings provides better context. I'm not interested in playing a game if I only get 1.5hrs or less of battery life.
That's part 3 ;)
Any chance you can export your system.xml file for RDR2? I’m using the EGS version through Heroic Launcher and I can’t make changes to settings in game, only through the xml file!
I've heard you could increase the Vram on the the deck and also have you tried proton GE? see if that increases performance?
I've yet to get my steam deck, it should be coming in a few days an man I cant wait to play around and tinker with things. been watching so many steam deck videos of box openings, tips and tricks, and benchmarks.
can't wait to try GTA5 on it!
I’ve tried a bunch of settings on Elden Ring and I just don’t think anything lower than 720 has enough clarity to see enemies at a reasonable distance
I had good luck with Elden Ring at 720 with medium settings while dropping more intense settings to low. Shadows were a big one.
I always try to Play at native Resolution. In most games I think that low+native Looks better than Medium+FSR Quality
Was Hairworks disabled for Witcher 3 (don't think you mentioned if it was on/off)? I know it can be a bit of a performance hog, for just hair improvements. Especially on a small screen that does not seem worth it to me.
Also curious that Ultra texture quality is crashing Red Dead 2, this strongly suggests an out-of-VRAM issue, but how is the deck running out when it's got 16GB of unified memory but the X1X which provides 9GB of unified memory to games (12GB physical, 3GB OS reserved) does ultra textures no problem?
Hairworks is disabled. As for RDR2 there were some known problems with proton that got patched a while back which might not have been fully fixed. I don't remember the details but they were memory related. I completed the snow intro and beginning area with these settings with no issue.
@@TheTerk Alright, good to know. I've personally run into a regression issue with Proton since I got my deck, so seems like I'm not alone with the latest version of Proton causing troubles
U can run armored core 6 really well
Locked 40 fps med/high settings or bust on modern AAA titles
RDR2 for me is still crashing on benchmark test, however it lasts much longer than before, does anyone else have same problems?. Thanks for this video its very helpful.
It crashed for me in Valentine.
MIght need to optimise the framerate of your camera 😂
Good info nonetheless
Ya, I'm playing around with frame rates a bit. The past few videos were shot in 24fps, some in 60. I just don't have a camera with HDMI out at 30fps
How did u get rd2 to run via steam deck
Proton Experimental bleeding edge ua-cam.com/users/shortsDNcqBUDXXzY?feature=share
Red dead won’t load story mode for me it will only load online
FYI, if you male the fps in the game the highest iy males a big difference.
so if I have 60or 120 in the game.. even I'd the steam says 30 it's going way higher:)
You can set the internal and external resolution before starting the game under properties and use FSR. I set mine at 640x400 and FSR upscales it. Why you guys haven’t figured this out.
He did in his first video of the series...
I don't get why more then 30 fps is needed in games tbh. I'd rather play a pretty game at 30fps any day haha
I just play everything at 30FPS.
Gaaaa ralt
Please optimize Battlefield 2042
I’m not playing games on low the graphics look terrible
Just play red dead 2 on 30fps it’s super smooth lol why 40? It’s obvious rd2 is a demanding game plus with the right settings u can get it to run smoothly.
Because 40 gives the illusion it's closer to 60 than 30. It's for a logic reason, some people explain this. Anyway, it's great, I also set most of my games at 40 also
@@cindyaimesodo4592 dude 30 fps runs fine for me with ultra settings for textures & medium to low settings for the rest of them. The graphics & details r still beautiful & it runs smoothly instead of fluctuating back & forth when u put it at 40fps. If u care that it’s 30fps then sure 40fps is good but you’ll have a much smoother experience locked at 30 than 40.
