The last time I used the Aratere was in 2005… weird to think of it as an “old” boat now, she was not even 10 the last time I was in the country

What a shame Jacinda Adherns order for new inter island ships was cancelled by the slash and burn boys club. The government are very aware that the inter island ships have a very tough life therefore wear and tear takes a toll. The parts can break through stress fractures. They have the most fantastic crew.

A typical unwise ignorant decision by this reactionary populist government which represents the very ordinary people, a complete betrayal of the MIddle Class Party created by Sid Holland, Keith Hplyoake, Jack Marshall and Jenny Shipley. Many in the past regarded the Cook Straight Ferry service as the NZ Railways. As my mother said about the Wisconsin Central and Canadian National operation of the Railways from 1993 to 2003, Tranz Rail was a shipping company ( in both senses). Fay Richwhite brought the Aratere new in 1995 and by leveraging it, selling it ten time over managed to raise the billion dollars of capital to sustain, ten years of private rail operation ( while I supported rail privatisation by 1992, I advocated returning NZR to state control in 1999 as the featherbedded staff had been sufficiently weeded out and Labour back in power the Railways were no longer in imminent threat of being closed down and David Richwhite had correctly realised that the railways were completly unprofitable and had stopped investing in sustainable track maintenance and the damage of minimal maintenace is cumulative and the failure of Helen Clark to buy rail back in 2003 was criminal and the deals with Toll in 2003 and 2007 worse). Such financial sophistication is of course beyond Willis and Mr Bishop who run the country like a Puritan salvation army camp and whose chief advisors are those disasters from the Key and Bolger government, Bill English and Don McKinnon who apparently went to school with AL Gore in Washington but has about a fifth of the US Vice Presidents intellectual wattage.

Remember when the a life boat fell off one of their ferries as it crossed Cook strait back in 2014 ?
This BS from the management of this company has been going on for years.
Maintenance costs should not be compromised but have been inadequate for many years.
Check out how much the CEO of this company has been earning ......not hard to see where the priorities lie.

This ferry is around 29 years as far as I can see.
Having just had work done on the steering which seemingly failed.
Hi Vis gear on. What's the go.
    Jeez what a clown show.

How can the ship be operational when the fault that caused the accident hasn’t been indicated let alone be repaired.

Thanks to Labour fiscal waste and incompetence, NZ has been left with third world infrastructure leaving those on the front line having to work miracles. No wonder so many are leaving for overseas.

National borrowing more this year than every Labour year except for Covid (where their policy kept our excess deaths and unemployment stats lower than almost every other country in the world). Labour with NZ First recognised the need to replace the ferries and had that underway when National ham fisted it and spent 300 million to break the contract, imagine how much inflation has changed the cost of the ship build since 2020 - that’s terrible fiscal management and it was done despite them giving 2.7 billions dollars a year back to landlords. Even just delaying that tax break 6 months would have paid for the increased costs to expand the Wellington docks.
