Karl - it's so great that these videos are still available from 3, 4, and even 5 and 6 years ago. Great to watch your progress. I played this piece on my fretless for many years, but I was unable to maintain decent pitch for the chordal structure that I was using - (yeah, "tiny-hand-syndrome)....................this is fantastic, sir!
Love the shades! You seem so natural in your ability to merge themes into a cohesive melody while maintaining the low-end groove, Karl. /I saw Mick Hawksworth's Pink Panther solo on his double-neck bass,Igor, while playing with Alvin Lee many years ago. Fantastic set that was, I tell you. On a related note, the intro to Return of The Pink Panther movie... wow! Love that score, especially the bass line.
Hey Karl! Very nice interpretation of one of my favorite songs for bass. Loved it! (Ever think about trying your hand at Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Welcome To The Pleasure Dome"?
Thank you Karl, that is an incredible redition of the Pink Panther theme. Thank you. Oh and agree you should put up a lesson with tabs. Then we can all try to emulate you. Flawless bass playing.
Aldo Andrade Thank you, that’s very kind of you! I guess I could do a tutorial video to go with it - I’ve had a few requests! I just prefer to keep moving forward - I upload a new arrangement every week. But I’ll think about it. In the meantime, the tabs/sheet music are available from my Patreon page, www.patreon.com/karlclews, and they are pretty self-explanatory.
Hi Karl I love this cover and was looking to learn it to use on a university project but when I clicked on the link for the tab it said error 404 not found any way you can help with this?
sounds like an alembic which is cool but they lack a really defined bottom end.. im sure you could boost it if you wanted to though through an EQ and pedals/modeling etc if you wanted right? the idea is probably not to have the low end too thumpy as to avoid muddying the other higher notes i'm guessing :) sounds nice
Exactly, Chris - this isn't the tone I would use when playing with a band. I specifically eq the bass differently to do these solo bass arrangements, in order to allow the melody to ring out clearly without being overwhelmed by the bottom end.
Thanks for the response, Karl. Wish I had the inner metronome you do by the way.. for some odd reason I have to ghost on bass or piano to get into a 'groove' and 'flow' mind set so I can play rhythmically around or within a groove somehow. I feel more proficient bassists don't need to do this, but that's another issue altogether than what I said earlier about your tone here. If I may ask one question: the only bass I have access to anymore since pawning my Hamer 5 string jazz copy (indonesian) and cort short scale acoustic/electric years ago (4 string) is my brother's Squier Affinity P-bass from a couple years ago. Could this be holding my plaiyng back? I think it may be .. like I've played high quality basses, or mid range anyway in pawn shops even and noticed they're just much much easier to play. When you have something like a squier p-bass esp with the action off, the setup in general, doesn't that prevent attack time from being proper, etc because each string is all on it's own sort of problematic level, and so on and so forth.. won't list all the oddities but yeah. keep it up :) oh and amongst the mostly garbage i recorded (practicing badly, while on drugs and such in the past) on my SC www.soundcloud.com/windows94 there's a bass cover of FM's "over and over" (first track on Tusk album). If you don't mind sometime giving me a critique of the rhythm of my playing there other than the few bum notes, I'd appreciate it. I have improved a bit since I made it a year ago or so, but yeah it represents my general approach to timing I think. sorry for the long post.
+Chris Crepon hey Chris, I'll go check out your FM cover - I'm a huge FM fan (check out my cover of Go Your Own Way when you get a chance), and of the Tusk album in particular. And in reply to your question, yes, a badly set up bass will definitely hold you back, whether it's cheap or expensive. A nice manageable string tension is essential for doing the kind of thing that I do, so I use extra light gauge strings (30-90) and have my basses set up meticulously.
Awesome, thanks Karl. I will check out that cover tonight or tomorrow morning, definitely. I hope youve heard the isolated bass track, either the master itself or a digitally isolated one but it's here on youtube somewhere. The Tusk album is fantastic and to be frank I used to use dissociative drugs a lot, which I won't promote as good or fun because I"m rather burnt out now but that album I categorize for whatever reason as this quintessential "trip" album to listen to while on psychedelics or dissociatives. Beyond that, it covers every emotion really possible within obvious limits of a single album... really takes me on this emotional adventure. Anyway, my brother had his P-bass set up and while the action has risen a bit since the setup 2 weeks ago or so, it's much easier to play now and I'm finally figuring out that bass rhythm isn't about *worrying* about rhythm.. it's more feeling it and hard to articulate. For example it's fun to play over a loop in a non 4/4 signature, then switch right to a 4/4 loop and keep that time signature working within it... and about being confident but not cocky, that's some stuff I've realized myself lately anyway. take care :)
So good I had to like it on UA-cam too. haha. I've seen a few of your videos, but kept meaning to subscribe. Well done. I love the sound of your bass. Status bass, is it? Keep up the great work.
Not much advice I can offer there, apart from the insight that I started as a classical guitar player, and that's basically classical guitar right-hand technique applied to the bass. Anyway, best of luck with it, I'm sure you'll work it out. :-)
