Lager Workarounds: Homebrewing Hacks for Lager-Like Beers

- 'Tis the season for brewing and fermenting lagers. But what if you don't have the set-up for true lagering process with fermenting fridge, a near-freezing basement, etc.? Brewing TV says "Fake the funk on lager-like beers!" In this episode, Dawson and our cohort Don Osborn brew up three beers. They use yeast strain and temperature workarounds to make them into great non-lagers.

Man, I love old Brewing TV.
"It's done when I NEED a beer." Greatest homebrewing statement to of ever been made.
Still coming back to these videos. Great content and info.
So glad I upgraded to a system where I don't have to carry lots of hot liquid around. I remember those days. Don't miss em.
Thanks Dawson, Chip and Don O! I finally started layering after watching this a few times. I did a Schwartz and a Pils with 2124 in my kegerator I'm able to hold it at about 52 degrees. Came out fantastic. Can't thank you guys enough!
I know I'm late to the party, but this is great info. Also very cool to see donosborn on BTV!
This is what I like to see from Northern Brewer nice
These guys nail making great videos they are all fun and informative. Definitely the kind of guys you can geek out with over a pint.
Bit too geekish tho
Great Video, Lots of good info.
Not trying to be that guy. Breing TV? Love you guys!
Thanks for every video!
Wish I watched this sooner, like when the house was freezing balls cold this past winter. Now I'm stockpiling fridges to combat the temperature swings.
A classic as are you 3.
Nice video. I enjoyed it
Beer is what makes my world go around...
I remember reading they used to brew lager then put in crock pot with lid and place it in the snow. I want to try that.
Will you hire me to be your jedi apprentice? Best job ever!!! You guys rock!
Its good to see I am not the only guy who measures 1/2 ounces with a plate and an eyeball.
upgrayddable I use two cups and an eye
nice brew
"This entire... spoon" :D
He is my favorite
About BTV EP - just awesome - as usual :) As for NORTHERN BREWER - I really wish that you guys and maybe some few other 'beergeek' shops will eventually come to EU, or at least start shipping here! I know, tons and tons of paperwork, customs bs - but here's really, trully very receptive market. Well maybe except UK, they got a lot of good shops. (Home)brewing revolution is spreading :)
Chip told me someone asked a question. Really it is up to you. The stronger the beer (and the colder the fermentation temp) the longer it will take to ferment. After it is done, the lagering phase might vary too. If you are making a crisp hoppy beer, maybe you want to drink it sooner. Or if more malty, you could let it lager longer.
@@patrickglaser1560 I think that was my reply to a comment from someone who must have gone off YT. Not sure. Ha.
I would love to see an Oktoberfest fermented at ale temps to see how that compares to a true lagered 'fest. Lager season is just around the corner!
haha....I saw that your equipment is named Slave I .....beer and Star wars geeks....awsome....me too brother!
Any of the Brewing TV crew going to be at the St Cloud Craft Brew Expo this weekend?
he's right folks.
You can make a good pLager by overpitching (1.5 times lager rate) + nutrients, and good amount of conditioning.
I want the zombie poster behind you guys! Where did you get one that size?
👍👍👍👍👍
Dan O- I'm going to try your lager work around. Do you still let your beer rest for 4 or so weeks to let yeast do its thing?
I like to drink or use what Dawson has when him went to La garage...
Just saw this. :) No way man. Keep the debate going! ha
What if u fermented the safale-05 at 60-62 Fahrenheit ? would it be more Lager like ?
@0:28 Montgomery Ward refrigerator. Peavey amp.
I hope you guys got chickens. After 2nd runnings my girls eat them grains.
Don O said "CDA". The debate is over.
Oh yeah get a fridge for temp control. Thats pretty standard for brewing great beer. I don't know anyone who brews great beer without control. Yeast is the key to great beer.
Psyyyych!!!
oh silly me, i thought this video was "have a lager with a reach around", my bad...
Shakes-beer.
BHP all the way.
why dont you just cool your beer with a plate chiller or pump ice water through your immersion chiller? saves the back mate.
Where is Micheal Dawson
He has his own channel now, Chop and Brew
ha! drank a beer i made with ya bra - virtual wonder
Thanks guys, dispels the myth that hot side aeration is U.S invention, been doing that with excess wort for years. However I will always have a syphon effect from my tun to my kettles, you do, what you do. What I really love about this is the guy is honest, he likes to brew good beer, and doesn't want to or like me cant afford, to spend large amounts of money investing in god knows what pieces of bling equipment, and because Dawson is interviewing him suggests that is very much the point. What I don't like is the transfer of large amounts of boiling wort, up and down stairs by hand, that's not safe guys.
Not a damn thing! But really dude Don O loves the ladies. Anyone who's watched his videos knows that he's a family man. But hey, if your a gay homebrewer or whatever that's cool.
dont get me wrong you guys are awesome but man learn to pull a pint those heads are crazy
at last a gay home brewer.
but what's wrong with being a gay homebrewer?
